You know anything about the numbers? Displacement, Torque and so forth?
Beautiful sound by the way
1982 Cadillac Coupe DeVille DIESEL
Have you ever seen one of these in person? Not many are left today. This car has been gone through for reliability, if you can consider that possible for an Olds ...
Great!! See my 1981 Coupe Deville Rare V6! also here on youtube. I have
owned an Olds 350 diesels, really no issues. You have to know how to run
and drive them to ensure lasting mileage! In the 80s people did exactly the
opposite, get in drive and destroy the things. By the late 80s most of the
problems were gone, but people lost interest after all the troubles. My
grandpa had a 1978 Olds Delta Royale Brougham that had the engine catch on
fire when I was 6, I am sure it was the D block. Great!!
True! I had mine checked out by an "older" mechanic at the dealer & he said
mine doesn't even need the GM pellets yet. These engines (esp. the power)
get a bad rap by younger dudes because they are used to 0 to 60 in 10
seconds! LOL. People have to remember back then luxury cars were built for
comfort, not speed, & the national speed limit was 55. I know a guy who's
dad bought an 84 coupe with the HT4100 new & he had 175,000 miles on it &
not one bit of trouble. Its all about maintenance.
Good questions! I'm not sure why GM didn't ditch the 5.7 IDI in favor of
the 6.2 IDI after it was introduced. I know they introduced the better
versions of the 5.7 in the early 80s while the 6.2 was being
engineered/introduced. I would imagine it was for business reasons; they
wanted to get a return on their development costs by selling the rehashed
versions. The 6.2 does fit where a 5.7 goes, though as far as I know it is
not a bolt in gig. Search for "6.2 diesel Cadillac" for examples.
That thing sounds like an old Mack truck brah.....LOL! I have a 1984 Coupe
DeVille with the "dreaded, never runs, explodes, don't buy, take you to a
mental hospital if you do" HT4100 engine. Mine has 24,000 original miles
and I lucked out because I actually got one of the GOOD HT4100's! Now
theres a nice, smooth quiet ride. And as for mileage, I've actually gotten
27MPG on the highway crusing at a nice 60 MPH. Needless to say I baby it
because I want to keep the engine running well.
I currently have this 82 Cad Diesl. as you mentioned the head bolt problem
which I current have. I'm having trouble finding the right head bolts? The
replacements that I've found say they don't have the studs on top.
So....question: is it nesessary to have the bolts with the studs on top? Do
you know where to find them? Oh by the way I enjoyed listening to your
vid...POS lol. very good. this particular cadillac is in mint condition
with 50,000 orignal miles. Thanks
Dude u rock for having that in that cond. Your right about the number of
those that got trashed/wasted. I think they made FAR fewer of those than
the 4100s. Wonder why gm used the weak 200 4R trans & not a TH 350/400?
That tranny can get torn up from the 4.3 chevy truck engine. So who knows
why they used it with the V8s. But looks like u eliminated most of the
common issues. happy motoring. I think fuel economy was close to 30mpg for
the folks wondering.
It did have a WTS light, yes. I would imagine that the 5.7 IDI would NOT
handle a turbo. I just don't think it has the strength... unless you had
custom pistons made that were very low compression and even then you'd
probably still blow head gaskets. Speaking of Cadillac diesel swaps, you
can find several videos of people who have swapped 6.2s into Early 80s
Cadillacs. There was even a 70s Seville that had an Isuzu 4bd1t under the
hood on eBay recently.
Yes, 350 Diesel has always fascinated me, sound, smell, etc. Diesel is very
popular in Norway, especially when it cost 50% less than gasoline. The only
"problem" is a cold start in winter when the temperature falls below 0 F. A
neighbor had Olds Delta 88 1980 engine with 500,000 original miles. Use the
blockheater summer and winter and change the oil every 1500 miles was his
advice! I will take to upload a video soon, a rare car here too ..
@PITBULL35383 The 4.3 came out too late, as this is when the market fell
due to the ABC news report demonizing the Oldsmobile Diesels. I once read a
report on the prototype v-6 they had in a front wheel drive car at their
testing ground, they hammered on it, serious abuse to prove it's
durability, it won them over. At the time, the FWD cars were getting 4
cylinders for economy, the 4.3 had economy and power, but was discontinued.
@CorvusCasull 1980 and 1981 B-body Bonnevilles. From 1982 to 1985 the
Bonneville name graced the G-body intermediate class (a la Oldsmobile
Cutlass and Chevy Malibu), but the diesel option was discontinued in
September 1984. Realizing Pontiac drivers had no B-body version of the
Chevy Caprice/Oldsmobile Delta 88, during 1983 the Canadian arm of GM
brought out the Parisienne sedan and Safari wagon to USA Pontiac dealers.
With the DX version of the 350 IDI, GM was close to getting it right. But
the first couple of releases were absolute junk. (Of course much of the
problem was a populace completely clueless about diesel engines) An avid
hobbyist can make one of these fairly trustable as mentioned in the video.
A lot of guys do look for the DX block to convert them into high horsepower
gassers. Its very doable.
What media outlet started that disinformation anyway? Its annoying. The
percentage of people who think the D and DX 350 IDIs were merely a gasser
Olds fitted with diesel parts must be at least 95%! What this shows is that
most people know very little about engines. No basic light duty passenger
car engine could withstand 22:1 compression in original stock form, or at
least not for very long!
its my goal to someday get a 350 diesel and rebuild it, making it as
reliable as i can. and then put it into an old gm station wagon of some
sort. probably early or mid seventys oldsmobile. and then converting it to
run on vegtable oil. it would be AWESOME for road trips, and so cheap to
run. and you could brag to everyone what kind of mileage you got, plus how
little it cost you for fuel!!
@CorvusCasull It was a 455 from a 1976 olds 98, I just got a 1981 cutlass
with a rebuilt 5.7 diesel to have a spare motor for the caddy. The deal is
if I pull the engine & Trans out I can keep them and give the body back. I
have been running it around to see how it is before I pull it out and it
runs perfect, No blow by at all and nothing going on in the cooling system
so it's a go
VERY good and informative video on these beasts. I've owned two 350 diesels
in my life: an '81 Buick Century and an '84 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser
wagon. Both had been rebuilt and had all the updates done to them prior to
my buying them. Got many good miles out of them before I sold them to other
350D enthusiasts and I'm sure they are both still chugging along somewhere.
Here at 6,000ft it was very slow, but I never cared. I ran TCW3 2-Cycle oil
as an additive. Mileage was good, but not that impressive. The pump was
turned up slightly and advanced about 2°, it averaged about 17-19 mpg.
Hills at altitude played a huge factor in lower mileage also. At sea level
on flat land I bet this thing would have been able to pull mid twenties.
Another serious compliment! Thanks! Though I couldn't in good conscience
actually compare it to the Macks of yore. I imagine the remaining HTs are
not as horrible as everyone remembers. People beat the snot out of cars and
then are furious when they grenade, but I bet if you baby that old Cadillac
and keep mind of its weaknesses, it'll do fine.
I wanted to buy an 82 Coupe DeVille with this engine but the guy wanted way
too much money for the car. It only had about 25,000 miles on it but there
was engine oil pouring out between the intake manifold and the head. The
350 Diesel is one reason why the American public got scared away from
diesels. Nobody wants a diesel passenger car.
did it have a wait to start light? i wonder even with the ARP bolts if a
turbo would be too much for the motor... i was actually thinking about
putting a cummins turbo in my cadillac because of parts availability and
reliability. i never had any luck with that metric 200r4 so i replaced it
with a th350 and 3.08 ring gear.
