Is it possible to plant lettuce in the Philippines? I live in Manila and March is the start of summer here and it can get hot up to 38 degrees Celsius. If I try to plant it, does it mean my lettuce will be bitter through out? :(

+CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY Thank you! I bought these seeds from a Filipino company: //www.ramgoseeds.com/products.do?item_id=23726 / //www.ramgoseeds.com/products.do?item_id=23725 I hope they'll grow fine and I hope they're heat resistant. We have an open shaded area (part of our garden has a roof) and another part that receives morning sun. I'll keep you posted :)

+Julia Javier It can be challenging to grow lettuce in hot weather. You can provide it with a shade cloth or grow in containers and keep in a partly shaded area. A heat tolerant green that has worked well in my summer heat is mailbag spinach, not a lettuce, but a green, that is similar to spinach. Also, romaine lettuce does tend to be a more heat tolerant type of lettuce. Good luck, keep me posted, Julia!

+Markdguarin Thank you :) Where can I buy Iollo lettuce? Does Ramgo have it?

it is possible, but choose some heat tolerant lettuce, im currently growing a variant called lollo rosso and a super heat tolerant little gem lettuce. DO not set them out in direct sunlight even in the morning sun. lettuces can thrive in shaded areas. but you can also grow it inside of your own home under some cfl or led grow lights. growing your own lettuces is a plus since they are very pricey here in the philippines.

I'm hoping to have better luck with my lettuce this summer. I heard that if i pick the smaller leafs that should help with it not being so bitter.

Oh ok. Jt bear told me i should try growing more kale he says it is much more frost and heat tolerant. I have i think 2 new varieties of kale this year so i guess i will be trying those out :) Can't wait!

+Benja's Uber 1337 Hobby Yes, the smaller leaves are sweeter. But it does tend to get bitter with the heat.

why is it bad when Lettuce bolts up?
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j8Rs5WNOkWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABlw/8YB5a5-JI1U/photo.jpg?sz=64
It's not bad- it's making flowers and then seeds when the flowers dry out. It just becomes bitter when it bolts and is not very good to eat.

my lettuce is growing fine and nice here in Florida 92F direct sun light

iceberg lettuce, butter, and long-Leaf lettuce.I think has nothing to do with the weather...from my own experience, I think my lettuce is growing thanks to a sub irrigated planter I did 5 years ago. when the weather is warm water evaporates through the roots and when is cold the planter collects more water. The planter has an overflow pipe that keeps the proper amount of water all the time. I water my plants base on the amount of water in the planter , not by the way the lettuce look like. They are doing great exposed to the ambient temperature all year long. During winter they have a very slow growing process but they don't die like tomatoes' plants.

Great! What variety are you growing? Some are more heat tolerant than others.

Hey Bobby, lettuce looks great. What were you using for the Kratky references, books, articles, videos, etc? I am really interested in looking that stuff up, you have proven that it works good.

+mhpgardener Thanks ... your results are most impressive.  I am thinking about building an aeroponic-NFT system like the other system you referenced in your video.  There is a company that has that hybrid of aeroponic while the nutrient reservoir rises and falls.  But I like the simplicity of what you have done.

+justgivemethetruth I did a search online for "kratky" and started reading. The more I read, the more sense it made.

Who would do hydroponics? How about a disabled woman who is living on a fixed income er I mean me? Dollar store containers/potting soil (to start with), and yogurt cups with holes drilled in. Now I can have fresh produce all year round without leaving my house or spending more than I can afford. Everything is done within feet of a faucet.

Вы прекрасно можете выращивать свежие овощи дома. Нужно солнце либо специальные световоды для освещения своего домашнего сада иначе можно разориться на счетах за электроэнергию. Самая простая технология для дома это dutch bucket hydroponic.

I've found I can grow grow A LOT more veggies in hydroponics in the same space than I can in containers, it is cheap, clean, less buggy, minimal water, and you can have everything at waist height, I have greens growing on my table with cheap shop lights from homedepot where I can sit to trim off my goodies or play with the setup

Давно пора заниматься этим интересным делом... выращивать овощи круглый год в своей тепличке или дома.

I love Asian men but I'm allergic to most sea food and pork lol I wouldn't want to burden their food choices. Maybe a 1st/2nd generation American Asian man wouldn't mind...
