when I put the halter around the horse's neck to change halters I never put
the stem through the halter eye. that way if he bolts the halter will fall
away if the rope snags on something or he steps on it while running.
Always remember "Murphey's Law."
Thank you I found that very helpful and appreciate the effort
Rope Halters
In this video, I talk about why I use rope halters, my favorite brand of halter, and I also show you how to properly put on and tie a rope halter. To read the article ...
Great video! I had never used a rope halter until I had a young horse that
was very unresponsive to a nylon halter. By switching to the rope halter
(just a cheap version) he was very sensitive to those pressure points,
leading and all ground work progressed much more positively after that
switch. I am definitely going to try one of these halters out, as I find
the generic ones to be a bit stiff. Thanks for the info!
Putting a rope halter on a horse.
video shows how to halter a horse using a rope halter.
Thanks for the useful video. Today I had to catch and halter a horse for
the first time. Luckily this one was as relaxed as the one from the video
and it all went smoothly. A very helpful video for the completely unaware
like myself.
Why a Rope Halter is Better Than Webs & Buckles - www.thinklikeahorse.org - Rick Gore Horsemanship
//www.thinklikeahorse.org/index.html Rick talks about rope halters, the benefits of not having buckles or snaps on lead ropes or halters. The horse in this ...
I like making my own rope halters and mecate. (Yes, it's a girly issue, I
like to add a little paracord bling , but I DO ride and we haul to all
sorts of fun charity and training events - I don't just feed him treats and
tap him with magic sticks LOL!)
I prefer a 3/8" halter and a 1/2" mecate and I can whip them out in
nylon, but I find it really hard to bury the end of the splice in braided
cotton rope. Do you, or does anyone, have any tips/suggestions?
(I was wondering if the type of fid with a channel and a tongue to catch
the rope might make things easier?)
I have a question about rope halters. Sometimes I have trouble getting
control and steering on the ground with my arab gelding. I've considered a
rope halter, but because of his dished face he seems especially sensitive
to pressure on the nose. Would this be to "strong" a halter for him? And if
I use it, will the new found control remain the same if I have to put him
in a regular halter or bridle for showing or turnout? Thank you!
lol.. that horse reminds me of mine, too friendly ;) i never used a rope
halter up until a couple years ago, the only time i use a web or nylon
halter now is for pictures. (since mine are all very colorful) however,
they make rope halters in pretty much any color you like~! it should have
been mentioned, that rope halters do NOT break, so do not leave a horse
unattended with one on. i enjoyed the kind hands with your horses.
Let's just be very clear here. Men who like horses have incredible penis
envy. Now, there's nothing wrong with being gay, I guess, but imagining a
horse cock in one's mouth shooting gallons of mule juice down one's gullet
is kinda sick. I know a guy who still likes Guns and Roses and Queen. He's
had so much dicksnot sprayed on his face that cum gutters had to be
installed around his neck.
I transport my horse in her rope halter. I throw the lead over her back in
the trailer and hook her to a quick-release trailer tie. In an emergency, I
fully expect her to break that trailer tie. I will still have the halter
and lead rope to take my panicked horse out of the trailer. I hope I NEVER
encounter this situation!!
See this postet two years ago, not sure you'll read it. I ride/walk my pony
in a rope halter, but I transport in an regular collar. As he's pointing
out, the snap is the weakest. If the horse panics in the trailer, the snap
is more likely to break so that the horse is free
I'm gonna admit that I broke in my pony in a fluffy "loveydovey comfy
halter". Maybe naive to think my youngster wil always be that calm and
trust her that much, but it was the equipment she at the time liked the best
@Hudson2012 : I answer that on my video "what is a Mustang horse". It is a
freeze brand put on by BLM when he is caught. They use extreme cold to kill
the hair, better than hot brands that burn the skin and hair.
can horses travel in these? my horse has a fur headcollar and im never
worry about hurin her like i would with these and ther are some horses at
my yard that a hard to handle but we always use headcollars
okay I have one question: Are the mustang breed born with the mustang
markings on their necks, or when you get them out of the wild do you put
that on there? Is it always on the left side of the neck?
@stargirlamy : not sure what you mean by head collar, yes a horse can
travel in these, but they do not break so you don't want to leave them on
when horse is not attended to or checked on.
GREAT BEGINNING, EASY TO FOLLOW FOR THE FIRST 3/4 STEPS, THEN IT STARTS TO
GET A BIT UNCLEAR , AND THE MEASSURMENTS JUST DO NOT ADD UP. I AM WASTING A
LOT OF ROPE. BUT I HAVE MANAGED TO TIE SOMETHING RESEMBELING A HALTER .
THANK YOU, MAYBE DO ONE AGAIN, STAYING STEP BY STEP WITH CORRECT NO WASTING
DISTANCES OF ROPE KNOTS AND WHY ONE SIDE IS MEANT TO BE LONGER/ SHORTER.
MAYBE USE TWO COLOURED ROPES? WHEN TYING KNOTS. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS...

Um I am extremely unsure of how to connect the rope to make it lay by the
cheek? Connect the back to the front. You were doing this at the end of
part 2 and by the time two ended an I had to switch to three you had
finished it and there were no directions for it. Also, how would I go about
cutting the excess rope off the end! Torch it off like as in melting it?
I'm really not sure and I am stuck at the cheek part. I have half a halter
made. Help!
hi. thanks so much for making the video. i made a halter for my pony and it
looks like it fits when i put it on. but if i leave him with it on for ten
minutes he has managed to pull the noseband off the front of his nose so
the whole halter hangs from his neck. do you know what part of the halter i
should change the lengths of. the noseband cant be made any smaller or i
wouldn't be able to put it on him. thanks for any advice you could give me.
Hi Thanx a bunch! You two are entertaining as well as informative : ) I
made a rope halter following your directons with some extra rope--I started
with extra rope and pulled one of the loops out and made an extra knot in
it and made reins as part of the halter (hope that make sense....one of the
loops under the chin becomes a rein if pulled out long enough and an extra
run in through the knot : ) thanx again....
Great Video!.. I am going to try making my own now..... the reason for the
extra knots on the norse band are for presses points.... less force/clearer
communication. Any halter with the 4 nose band knots I have seen are done
with a thiner rope so you dont get the same size knots that would rub to
much...
I am having the same issue connecting the rope where it lays on the cheek.
(the end of part 2) I can get it to ty just like the other knots but it
comes out the knot on the wrong side. So the extra length of rope goes
toward the fiador knot instead of across the nose band... What am I doing
wrong?
I do want to thank you as I have paid a lot for these small rope halters
and never thought I would be able to make one. I did and it fit perfect- I
also got to choose my colours and patterns on the rope by making my own.
Nice to have a brother you get along with so well.
I agree except we use a very thin rope halter only for training and the
extra knot pressure can just be a bit more of an incentive to respond. The
knots should not be needed once the horse is trained. Thanks again for the
video -
The two extra knots are for pressure points. After all the whole point of a
rope halter is moving off the pressure. So even though your videos are so
helpful and wonderful. That is the reasoning behind the dumb people
I managed to make one but the measurements need to be listed for different
sized horses if you could and when it ended my tie rope on one side was
really short so I had to tie it off and just use the one strand
MUCHAS GRACIAS DESDE MEXICO, THANKS A LOT DUDE THIS WAS VERY HELPFULL, AND
SIMPLE, DID IT THE FIRST TIME, THANKS AGAIN JAJAJA MY SON WANTS TO LEARN TO
DO IT TO, GRACIAS SALUDOS DESDE MEXICALI MEXICO
