I will point out that when O'reilly goes to Ireland, his healthcare really
isn't "free". I *really* wish liberals could get that through their
exceptionally thick skulls.
+Ike Evans Because of this I don't view it as a business, but as something society requires. Same with education. If something necesarry for society, like healthcare or education, doesn't get these three aspects you mentioned done economically, because quality and speed are too expansive for too many to afford, I think the government should find ways to support its affordability.I can't objectively judge your example. As a German I can only say: Things work. They work fine and insurance prices are affordable. Not only that, but it is significantly less expensive than it already is in the US, as you stated. There also are lots of negative examples one could list regarding the character of American health insurance companies. Take a look this one (youtube link): y162FE-4z7A Over here, you wouldn't get anyone, except for maybe a few rich people, to give up on our healthcare system. I'm pretty sure that the whole rest of the world considers this common sense.I just hope Bernie does end up getting elected, introducing a proper healthcare system which slowly but surely proofs that it works, to finally put an end to this in my eyes ridiculous discussion.
+Jan InsaneMTL There is an economic reality to every service that involves three aspects:1) speed/availability,2) cost3) qualityTo hit on any one of these aspects is generally to sacrifice on the other two. If you try to hit on two of the factors, you sacrifice significantly on the third. McDonald's is a great example. Their business model is based on (1) speed and (2) being cheap. As a result they sacrifice on (3) quality. To the extent they try to increase their quality, they must compromise on (1) and (2).American's pay more for their health insurance because they have the best (1) accessibility and (3) quality in the world, bar none. For example, if your 80 grandma needs a heart transplant, in the US there is a chance she can get one. In other countries, they would just let her die. Also, America is the unprecedented leader in new medical research. Although there is research going on around the world, the bulk of it takes place in the USA. Research is not cheap. What does this mean? It means healthcare is going to be more expensive. Unfortunately, because Americans love having the best health care, and because we want our 80 grandma's to have heart transplants, there is no solution that will significantly drive down costs.Healthcare is not free.
+Ike Evans Two things:1. Because it's relatively free. This means it is in fact not totally free, but compared to what America currently got, it is more free. It doesn't charge you anything other than your contribution.2. I wouldn't necessarily say that. As I perceive it, the left wing does not always talk about "free healthcare". There are left winged people who do so, but it's not everyone, in fact, not even the most outstanding one, who is Bernie Sanders. In his plan on his website, which on paper would be multiple pages long, he doesn't call his idea "free" healthcare or medicare one single time.Conservatives however persistently accuse him of promising "free this, free that, free whatever to everyone" <- Not a quote, I think you know what I mean.
+Jan InsaneMTL So why does the Left insist on calling it "free" over and over again? There is a larger economic reality that almost everyone tries to avoid when it comes to healthcare. Although there are realities the the Right also avoids when it comes to healthcare, the Left calls it "free" because it is a good selling point - even if it is intentionally deceitful.
+Ike Evans Yes, it is not free. But it still is better. You can either pay an affordable amount of money regularly and then get treated for no charge, once you get hurt or sick, or you don't pay anything, but then go bankrupt or sell your house, in case you have a really big accident or some difficult to treat disease.
given how outright lazy stupid American voters are...Trump would destroy
Sanders.
Bernie's platform is very nuanced and requires research to fully understand
and the common American voter will not take the time.
+Greg E fair point. plus the big issue with a mainly millenial voter base is that young people have a tendency to be morons and not vote. and this is coming from a 16 yr old who will be very angry if the older half of my generation allows trump or any of those other greedy assholes into the oval office. i'm going to be just short of my 18th birthday when the november election happens >:(
Bernie seems like a nice calm guy, I can see why he has the young voters
because of his attitude. But oh god... Why did he have to include
socialism, no thank you.
+Crooked cat if you don't know what socialism is or hate it based on preconceived notions, its because the very rich don't want you to understand you'd benefit from it. "This country has socialism for the rich, rugged individualism for the poor" - MLK
+Crooked cat please educate yourself on what democratic socialism actually is and what bernie stands for, instead of voting based on your preconceptions.
