+R Zap you can Hotspot tether your iPhone's Internet Data to your iPad and you'll be able to send and receive text messages as long as your iPad is logged in with the same Apple ID as the iPhone and also get directions using maps. But if you don't have an iPhone to tether data with then yes you will need data connection for maps and messages to work.

+iDeviceHelp Have you tested that? I know continuity requires the devices to both be on the same wifi network, but hotspot works too for that?

+Edgar Guerra you can Hotspot tether your iPhone's Internet Data to your iPad and you'll be able to use streaming services such as iTunes radio or Spotify. Or you can also login with the same Apple ID on your iPad and download your entire music library to the iPad if you don't have data to share. Or sync your music to the iPad using iTunes. You'll also be able to use other services such as messages and receive phone calls with the new continuity feature in iOS 8 you'll be able to answer phone calls on your iPad as long as both devices are logged in to the same Apple ID

I came to this video because CarPlay was not working on my new Pioneer 8000NEX. CarPlay would not appear as it is supposed to do. A phone call to Crutchfield (where I bought the unit) solved the problem and I am writing this to relate the fix. Attach your iPhone via USB cable (must be attached to USB1). On the unit, go to settings (gears icon) --> System menu (tools icon) --> Input / Output Settings --> Smartphone Setup --> Devices. It probably says "Other." Press Devices. Now it should say "iPhone" (after a warning about resetting something). CarPlay should now work. Thanks for making this so easy, Pioneer.

+lavalitedude Thank you, thank you!! This DID work, and there was nothing in the upgrade instructions about it. As I mentioned below, I have just one USB port, so I didn't think that was part of the problem. But making the system re-recognize my iPhone made all the difference. Thanks again!
