Cooking Makes Minerals Inorganic? (Raw Vegan Myth #8)
Join me as I do my best to tackle all the silly, irrational reasons often given for eating raw and vegan diets. In Episode 8, I look at the claim by raw foodists that ...
+Tracey Benitez To begin with they certainly are. Plants take raw, inorganic minerals from the earth and bind them into a "food matrix" which contains carbons and peptides and can now be readily assimilated by animals and humans. Humans are not supposed to directly consume soil components as the minerals aren't readily available for our system.
+eat more plants for a mineral to used by the body it must be "chelated" or otherwise bound to some from of carbon to be manipulated by the body. the process of chelation usually happens in the plants but some argue that it can also happen with in bacteria in the intestines.
+Vegan Sabina Definitely. I'll add it to the list. :)
B12, Assimilation & Absorption of Vitamins, Minerals, & Nutrients on ANY diet~
Can a vegan diet cause deficiencies? That all depends~ Is your body functioning optimally? Is your small intestine able to do it's job?...Or is it damaged.... If so ...
Are you in Clearwater?? Live in Pinellas? I know fasting can dissolve old
waste matter but does it do this only in the large intestines or also the
lower? Cool experience you must have had.
No, I was living in Pa. Your entire body goes through healing as it sees fit.It is believed that what is in most need of healing, the body works with first.... & so on....
Thank you for addressing my questions Itsy! :-)
The medical system does not carry out an accurate test for B12 or iodine. I
only wish I could afford to pay for the accurate tests myself.
One Mineral Deficiency on a Raw Vegan Diet that will Sabotage Your Health
I'm so glad to hear that the mass which was troubling you shifted.
Itsy, I've just received a notification that you thumbed up my comment. I don't agree with that iodine info any more, because Don Matesz shared this info below. I hope you are doing well Itsy. I've missed watching your fun videos! :) xThe so-called iodine sufficiency test doesn't do anything except tell the practitioner that there is a certain amount of iodine accumulated in the body. Outside of the Iodoral pushers, no biochemists talk of iodine sufficiency, because no one has produced any evidence that high amounts of accumulated body iodine is either necessary or beneficial, quite the contrary, excess iodine just like excess of anything else is harmful. Yes, so-called "iodine literacy" just means they all have read the same literature and joined the echo chamber that refuses to acknowledge the harmful effects of excess iodine established by people who aren't interested in selling supplements. As the info I sent establishes clearly, one can get iodine excess even from whole foods, just as one can get excess protein, excess methionine, excess cholesterol, excess calories, and excess of many other things from whole foods.Nevertheless, the scientific literature does show that seaweeds are safe and beneficial in amounts similar to the average Japanese or Chinese consumption (not the isolated pockets of populations that consume unusually large amounts of seaweed). As I said, it is perfectly safe to consume iodine up to 1mg (1000 mcg) per day from whole foods or supplements, as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. This is roughly 10-30 g of seaweed in a day. Bromine detox? What people are calling "bromine/flourine/chlorine detox" is in fact iodine toxicity. Most often these are skin eruptions. "Other adverse effects of excess iodine intake include iodermia, a rare dermatological reaction to iodine intake. These dermatoses may consist of acneiform eruptions, pruritic red rashes, and urticaria (Parsad and Saini, 1998). In its most severe form, iodermia has resulted in death (Sulzberger and Witten, 1952)." //www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10026&page=280Kelp is safe IN A SMALL DOSE. Toxic reactions only occur when consumed in too large doses. Dose determines toxicity. My point in the last email was simply to establish that it is beyond doubt that dried seaweeds can provide very large doses of iodine,Iodide is nothing but the ionized form of iodine, in other words, iodide IS iodine. These are not two different elements. There is no such thing as an iodide supplement that has no iodine. If it has iodide, it has iodine. //www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10026&page=258//www.rsc.org/learn-chemistry/resource/rws00028015/iodide-ionI harvested seaweeds for a small harvester, Larch Hanson, off the coast of Maine, for one season in the 1980's. //theseaweedman.com/ We dried the seaweeds on lines on the beach. Larch had his seaweeds tested for both environmental contaminants and nutrient contents at a University. They most definitely contained iodine and did not have contaminants. Of course that latter will vary depending on where the seaweeds are harvested. This is no different for land vegetables and fruits. The claim that dried seaweeds do not contain enough iodine to correct deficiency is flat out false. Here is an example of the evidence:"Altogether, 12 different species of seaweeds were analyzed for iodine content, and found to range from 16 microg/g (+/2) in nori (Porphyra tenera) to over 8165 +/ 373 microg/g in one sample of processed kelp granules (a salt substitute) made from Laminaria digitata." //www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15588380"We investigated thyroid function and urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in seven patients with severe motor intellectual disabilities. All seven received total enteral nutrition (TEN) for more than three years with a daily iodine intake of less than 20 µg. They were diagnosed as hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency (HID) because of high TSH levels (7.6--82.3 µIU/ml), lower free T4 (FT4 0.4--1.5 ng/dl), negative anti-thyroid antibodies (anti-thyroglobulin antibody, anti-thyroidal peroxidase antibody) and extremely low UIC (<25--58 µg/l) levels. We gave them 1--2 g powdered kelp (200--400 µg as iodine) once a day, which restored their thyroid function and normalized their UICs. We proposed that daily powdered kelp would be effective and safe to treat HID in patient receiving long term TEN." //www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3687637/Dried kelp is used in Chinese herbal medicine (which I practice) and can provide an overdose of iodine sufficient to cause thyrotoxicosis: //www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1924637/Here's another case report of thyrotoxicosis after ingesting excess iodine from kelp: //www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2418722/Studies have shown that excess iodine intake - as little as 750 mcg/d - suppresses thyroid function:"A randomized, controlled clinical trial in Wales by Chow and coworkers (1991) showed significantly elevated TSH concentrations associated with total iodide intakes of 750 μg/day or more."//www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10026&page=279"Wolff (1969) reported that prolonged intakes greater than 18,000 μg/day increased the risk of goiter" and "population groups with high, chronic iodine intakes (50,000 to 80,000 μg/day) in Japan and China" also have an increased risk of goiter. Those doses are in the 12.5 to 50 mg/d range provided by 1-4 Iodoral tablets. //www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10026&page=280"High iodine intake has also been associated with increased risk of thyroid papillary cancer in humans (Franceschi, 1998; Lind et al., 1998)."//www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10026&page=280"Seasonal variations in thyrotoxicosis have been related to variations in daily iodine intake from 126 to 195 μg to 236 to 306 μg (Nelson and Phillips, 1985)."//www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10026&page=280"Studies have correlated an increase in the incidence of AITD with a population's higher intake of iodine (Foley, 1992). " AITD= autoimmune thyroid disease. //www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10026&page=283Here's another 2014 review of the evidence for iodine-induced adverse effects: //www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3976240/"A study published in 2012 reported that the median UIC (730 μg/l) of the populations of two Somali refugee camps in Kenya who were receiving iodine supplementation were in the range consistent with excessive iodine intake.19 In a study of >200 Chinese adults, subclinical hypothyroidism was more common in those supplemented with a 400 μg iodine tablet than in those given placebo.20 These findings are similar to the results of other studies in Denmark21 and New Zealand,22 which also showed an increased prevalence of transient hyperthyroidism. The incidence of thyrotoxicosis was increased following periods of mandatory salt iodization, compared with when supplementation was not required, in both Spain23 and Zimbabwe.24 Another iodine supplementation programme in Bangladesh has shown no increased risk of thyroid dysfunction.25"Iodine supplementation also affects other aspects of thyroid health. For example, high iodine intake seems to increase the prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis in the Bio Breeding/Worcester rat model and in humans.26,27 The number of reported cases of thyroid cancer, particularly papillary thyroid cancer, has also increased following iodine supplementation in some studies, including a nearly 20-year study in northeastern China28 and a >50-year study in Denmark.29"The lowest observed adverse effect level for dietary iodine is 1700 mcg (1.7 mg) per day. This is why I recommend no more than 1 g iodine per day. //www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10026&page=281My recommendation is science-based, not my opinion.
Are you eating enough greens? We need minerals not just carbs! - Fruitarian Raw Vegan
People focus way to much on fruit and not enough on tender green leafy vegetables which are so dense in minerals which is key for optimal health on this ...
+Balbinka2010 I think for periods of time we are fine with fruit alone but long term our body will need more mnerals, we need to be aware of the signs of needing minerals which i can determine easily. If your eating enough calories and your getting strong cravings for cooked is a major sign of needing minerals. Cooked food cravings go within about four days of having enough greens every day preferable as green fruit smoothies.
+Sun Fruit Dan I just scrolled down your videos yesterday and was wandering why you were feeling different back then. I am interested what other people think about this, cause I am also testing it myself. I think I am better without greens. Strong cravings sometimes, you are right
+Balbinka2010 Care to elaborate? I have never once promoted anyone else stops eating tender greens in any videos, online posts, coaching sessions etc.. I have been self testing it myself but i have stated before i do not recommend it to anyone but if you felt drawn to it then do what your body is telling you do.
While I agree that many of the fruits people are eating are below normal in
minerals, it is because of the way they are grown. So optimally, a person
could get enough minerals *IF* they were eating fruit grown in mineral-rich
soil. But since that's not the case for most people, we're advised to eat
greens to make up the minerals shortfall. But we need to understand that
even though in general, greens are higher in minerals than fruit pound-for
pound, they are still grown in the same soils as the under-mineralized
fruit. And eating way more greens than we're designed to eat in an effort
to supply our body with enough minerals for optimal healing and optimal
health (two separate supply issues), can make it a chore for some people to
get enough carbs, and this is one of the reasons for "raw food fails". I
speak more to this issue in these two short outside-the-box articles...

+health101DOTorg Yes i mention in a lot of other videos and face to face with people that if the soil is grown in the 90+ trace minerals then it will be in the fruit and meet our mineral needs but most people do not have access to this type of food or capability to grow their own. I forgot to mention it in this video but in many other videos, information i share etc i always state only buy organic greens due to the high levels of pesticides sprayed on them and so your getting more mineral rich greens but of course again we do not know the type of soil they are using for the organic greens so personally i recommend some sort of natural organic food based multivitamin. I find for myself and all of my clients we find it easy to eat 1-2lbs of greens a day and enough enough carbs to meet our bodies calorie needs. Thanks for replying don and i will check your links.
+Thetravellingcarpenter Its one of the cheapest places in the world and it depends what fruits you want to eat. Eating cooked is cheaper if you go to the cheap vegan restaurants but most people do not and spend a lot more!
+veganactive I never recommend kale as its a medium oxalate green that is not tender, check out oxalate foods on 30bananasaday for full information on why they can effect us negatively! I only recommend tender greens such as the lettuce family which i mention in other green videos.

Nice Harley! The best way is to grow your own food. Add 90+ nutrients. Use
organic materials. Filter the water. Then build from there. Grow your own
food because 50% of the nutrients are loss within 24 hours after pulling
the food from the soil. We are biological chemical beings. If you're not
eating good food sources from bio active soil. You're not as healthy as you
can be. Synthetic vitamins and nutes with a sexy label (organic or not)
won't bring the biology to your food (soilless growing).
My protips: bananas!!!! or rice. lentils. sweet potatoes. Depending on
area, markets are wayyyy cheaper than groceries stores and can get 'too
ripe' and 'ugly' produce practically free. If living in a cold area away
from the tropics then eat whatever produce is grown local, that could be
apples and potatoes... Don't eat anything processed, even almond milk!
Almond milk can be made at home IF needed. Oatmeal and other grains are
always cheap, even organic varieties.
Bananas are often picked to early. Natural or unnatural processes force the
fruit to ripen. The fruit isn't as optimal compared to freshly picked fruit
the was naturally ripened and picked fresh. So you don't eat 3 week old
bananas up to a month that were picked unripe and force to ripe for
convenience of profits. Common... I mean if the fruit is ripe before they
ship it, yet alone pick the fruit. It will go bad before making it half way
around the world.
Harley, my potentional caloric needs are about 3500 cals. I'm lfrw year and
half and I can easily eat 6000 and more because its really hard to get that
satisfaction after meal. Could it be some lack of something? When I eat 25
bananas in sitting a I want eat more but physically I cant. Or now I try hc
cooked vegan dinners, rice and potatoes and I can do easily 6 pounds of
potatoes in sitting but only sometimes I feel satisfaction. What do you
thing?
I rate them as crap. Look at what the TDF riders who spend 35 000km a year
in the saddle use. ALWAYS a lightweight, ergo designed, narrow saddle.
These are the cutting edge technology. Brooks saddles are heavy shitty
things only used by people that havent tried something from Specialized
body geometry etc. Its 2013. Saddle designs have come a long way. Yes, I
have used a brooks. Crappy saddles in my book.
you might be used to the effects of it by now though. I used to be able to
drink 20 shots of espresso (NOT a typo) in a sitting and now I get an
allergic type reaction when I drink caffine and I get anxiety attacks from
it. I also like the taste of coffee and sometimes have decaf but its hard
to find a decent decaf so I usually just skip it.
Don't buy any or keep any in the home, and avoid its presence for a good
4-6 weeks (I understand this one can be hard but its important). You should
lose the taste for it and after that, never let yourself "just try it"
again unless you think you're 150% over that addiction. If you like
coffee's taste then try a similar drink like Teeccino.
good to hear mate! Ease up on the running volume though mate. 8k a day is
world class volume. Ok if you can sleep 12 hours a night like a Kenyan and
have 15 years running to school and back in ones legs but otherwise its a
stress fracture/impact injury waiting to happen. Id go with 2-3k a day and
build it up over the years.
I can drink 1 liter of coffe and go immediately to bed and sleep like a
baby, so yes i drink 1-2 little cups of (ITALIAN!! That mean pure coffee
without ani more water...) coffe because i like the taste. And no, i'm not
on keto diet... Now what?? Coffee is NOT a strong stimulant for everyone so
i don't see the problem...
do i agree with you except the coffee, coffee is good for you and boosts
performance period. yea its a drug I mean your brain is made of drugs and
you talk about caffeine like its bad, its just not that bad dude.
Especially if you like sports, billions of cups of coffee consumed weekly
hardly anyone dead. Good shit.
I LOVE green juice. Drink cane juice by the daily gallon when I can get it.
Sugar cane juice is my fav green juice. I also make sure not to juice more
than I would eat in a sitting of any green. That way you avoid getting
toxic levels of oxalic acid that could cause kidney stones.
eh man, you changed my life with your videos and words!!! I just want to
thank you for being so real!!! IM 13 months vegan now and riding 30 km, and
running 8 km a Day. you and the banana girl are really doing something
great for the world.
