I lost my kidney's due to my unhealthy lifestyle. It cost me dearly, not
only health wise, but financially. Dependent on $894 in Social Security
Disability Income and $99 a month in food stamps and since last year I
managed on that to lose 90 pounds, turn my health completely around (I
received a transplant in June 2010) and these days eat very small amounts
of meat, of which I am nearing the end of that journey and will be complete
vegan/raw food in 2012. It is possible on $5 a day to eat right
@50sorrowC It is good to see someone that thinks. I get fed up with
americans talking about capitalism as it was "from the good side", while
communism is "from the bad". I'm not at any side, but I think. In Latin
America there were countless dictatorships established by the USA. I'm from
Brazil and I know a close person that was tortured, and I hear stories from
close people. Capitalism does NOT mean freedom in most of Latin America. If
it did better than communism we would have become rich.
the system we live in makes it really hard to switch to "ecological" food.
I'm not talking about vegan diet or vegetarian one. Just visit your local
superstore and check the eco shelf. Everything there is 2,3,4,5 times more
expensive than the normal mass produced products. If you are a poor person
that can hardly can purchase standard food supplies you would focus
primarily on your own survival regardless of the type of products you eat.
Well, that's capitailsm..profit and profit only.
Great interview with an inspirational super fit plant powered athlete. I
wonder if Rich has or will lose those running shoes? Since reading Born To
Run, I've gone from an overweight, out of shape cancer survivor nearing 50
to being a newbie vegan barefoot ultra marathon runner... a slow one, but
out there completely enjoying many long runs in 4MM huaraches from
invisible shoes. My main run mate is a goldendoodle who's becoming more
vegan each week. Dogs love veggies too!
@FoodForAthletes "non ecological" fruits and veggies from conventional
agriculture are a disgrace in our lives. Not just because we eat these
toxins, but also because we contaminate ourselves in other ways and destroy
our resources and beauties needlessly. Check this video "the permaculture
concept" /watch?v=ofKTgmW_FAg and you'll see what I mean. I agree with
50sorrowC, capitalism is a dead end route.
Tell me who is going to hell a so-called murding meat eating christian that
believes in jesus or a merciful vegan who has not accepted jesus, well take
heart vegan i am a christian vegan for 26 years and yeshua jesus is also

It's such a myth that athletes need to eat meat to perform well, many of
the best endurance athletes of all time were vegans of at least
vegetarians. I'm a runner and vegan and I believe it has helped me. In fact
I am now trying to promote vegan athletics with my blog:
veggiefueledrunner.blogspot.com
Wow!!! I just started and am eating buck wheat and quinoa. My friend has
been a vegan for a while and am getting advice from him. It is true what
you said though. You have to try it. I researched a lot of things that are
in meat and dairy products and don't want anything to do with it anymore
xaxa.
Actually eating vegan saved me a fortune. Lentils/beans are a fraction of
the price of decent quality meat. I can whip up a vegan meal for next to
nothing. It can get expensive if you buy bags of prepared pre-washed salads
etc, but I never bought those even when I ate meat.
Wow.... This guy motivates me. I just ate some chicken and beef and I feel
sick. Everytime I eat meat I want to take a nap but for some reason I
thought you needed some meat in the diet. I want to try what this guy does!
@50sorrowC non "ecological" fruits & vegiies are not expensive. Fruits and
vegiies should be the foundation in anyone diet's. True, they are good as
"ecological" fruits and veggies.
@FoodForAthletes would you say buying fruits and veggies at a foodmaxxx are
comparable to buying fruits n veggies at say a "whole foods" store? is it
the same?
So what's wrong with having a lot of stuff at home but traveling minimally?
If you have plenty of money this seems feasible to m,. or does that go
against minimalist rules?
I really enjoy your videos because they are professional and informational.
I am always sharing what I hear from you with others who seem to enjoy your
content also. It's nice to hear Harley speak in a more professional way. I
sadly had to unsubscribe to his channel because it's near impossible to
listen to around my children and family. Good info, just so much foul
language for me personally :(
Tips for helping absorb the book's content? 1) Re-read difficult sections and take written notes of your own. 2) Literally do the recommended exercises and activities, writing things down with pen and paper whenever possible. Hope that helps! When I find a game-changing book like that, I always digest the content more than once.
+Minimal Pro | by Sean Lee thanks...I think I will look more into the G7X, heard good things about that one from other people. (Can you flip the screen towards yourself, so you can see the shot when Vlogging?) The shot where you are sitting with the guys looks so nice. For the Q&A video I used the camera I record my workouts on (an old panasonic lumix), but when I Vlog I usually just record on my IPOD.
The first couple shots (without me) were filmed on my Canon 70D with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 art lens. It's a really great combo for video with fast auto focus and smooth blurry backgrounds. I use the RODE video mic go for enhanced audio recording. You can see me holding my camera when I'm talking because my buddy recorded the other shots on his camera. I highly recommend the 70D as an entry-level DSLR that's great for video (Casey Neistat uses it), but it all depends on what kind of lens you use with it. Your recent Q&A vids looks really nice and high quality. I thought maybe you already upgraded? A lot of my stuff is still recorded on my Canon G7X just because it's so compact and pocketable and still has great performance.

The early human diet was an eclectic mix of foods and meat was most likely
a part of this diet in the past. You only have to look at our closest
cousins (the chimpanzee and bonobo) to understand this. Both of these
animals incorporate VERY small amounts of meat into their diet, mostly in
the form of small mammals and insects. That being said, it is definitely
possible for modern humans to survive and prosper on a completely
plant-based diet. Just watch out for your B12 and iron intake! Cheers!
@TheElectroVibes if you advise to eat how our ancestors ate, then you could
try to go and kill some animal by your own hands . and when you kill him,
check the feeling in your heart- how do you feel, do you feel you did
something good or bad. If you feel good, then nobody' ll be able to
convince you that its bad, maybe just watching some movie (lets say
"Earthlings"). Thing is people buy meat in the shop and dont bother how it
came there, they didn't see the suffering of animals
@TheElectroVibes I actually think we are closer to the Raddish! Some would
argue a closer relation to the Collieflower, personally I say Banana, we
share after all 50% of DNA with the Banana and that is my favorite fruit..
although I don't think it is my ancestor or that i had one as an ancestor.
Truth is there are people with opinions and they do what they can to make
others make decisions based on their opinions. Not a good way of living a
life in my honest opinion. XD
@iSingLaLaLove Did you eat enough? What is also worth mentioning is that
Vegan diet if applied correctly, meaning not over indulge in proteins and
fats, have a detoxing effect. You describe the symptoms of such a thing
taking place, not know to much about you, some people have more toxins than
others and some are adding toxins to their body without knowing it. Perhaps
you should give it another go but add more fruit to your diet and remember
to eat enough. XD
@TheElectroVibes so if chimpanzees are eating each other, what's wrong then
if i catch some man and eat him? There is no such thing as Hindu religion,
in India there are many different religions and to give to all of them one
word- Hindu religion is the same as to tell "America religion" for all
religions in America. So would be interesting to know in which religion
people flatten their teeth, never heard of such thing
@MrNemy86 Vegetarian diet is indeed superior, atheism is not related to
this at all as the philosophy is of a less caring nature. Atheism appears
also to be on the loosing side as more and more people become believers. If
people would be interested in finding the truth instead of the latest fad
then we would have an enlightenment.
yeah and maybe she/he is taking meds and you know, not telling the doctor
you change your diet and maybe the meds toss him/her. when transitioning to
vegan, it really needs to be done well or else, youll end up eating vegan
chips from supermarkets and what not,,,
ive been a vegan for almost 7 months now. I have lost weight but im still
chubby from all the bad food i have had. but i have so much enegry now lol,
im the fastest runner out of all my friends and the heaviest because of the
muscle that i have lol, idk its weird
Well I'd say vegetarians are half way there. Whatever their reasons are for
going vegetarian, they are kind of half assing it if they aren't vegan.
Ethical, environmental or health goals are better met if you completely cut
animal products out of your life.
What did Rich do before triathlon ? Sure looks like he made alot of money.
Good on the guy but to execute the training for such an event as ultra-man
takes alot of time and money, especially if you are going to do it plant
based.
untrue scientific research proves we were MADE to be vegatarian, flat teeth
and all. That is why primates and monkeys are mostly vegetarian (they're
the closests to us) it even says it in the bible (for those who follow it)
Actually we do have canines. They just are not as sharp or long, our molers
are meant for knashing meat and grinding it down just like dogs do. We're
omnivores but were originally designed to be vegetarians.
He is exactly right!!!! You do feel way better and your body feels much
better once you go vegan!!! I am 100% vegan going on about 4 months now. Im
proud of myself for sticking to it.
Awesome interview! Sounds like he was inspired by Brendan Brazier's book
the thrive diet! Another vegan triathlete. Check out thrive in 30, a free
video web series for going vegan.
we don't have canine teeth..they r not like a dog. or a cat..come on...
they r very short for biting into fruit...nuts.. etc.. the meat for us
..just like the bible says..:D
i think everyone in this planet that is alive are cousins or siblings, we
all have DNA, dun dun dun. dont bash on me believers but i think there is
no god and nature made us,
i think everyone likes to ignore that our teeth and headshapes are
completely different to meat eating animals, and that we have a long
digestive system like a herbivore.
lmao you are hilarious, xD at least they changed their diet right? i mean
at least not like the standard american diet like burgers and sodas and
more sodas,
I wonder how much protein he eats? According to Colin Campbell, rats
spontaneously exercise twice as much on a diet with only 5% of calories
from protein.
What? No ones going to say it? Fine I'll do it. Wonder if Rich Roll has
ever been Rick Roll'd?

anyway I enjoyed the video.. I just want to add that I have never ever seen
jackfruits, sapodillas, whatever else those middle ones are called.. in any
supermarkets in my life. sure it's easy when they sell them .. but .. like
one example.. you can't get durian where i live. at all. I have no idea how
to get it. so the soloution for me to eat this way is to move .. becuase
it's not possible when I can only get my hands on a small variety of fruit
in my mind.
madGANJAsmok all cashews are poisonous. They need to be heated to remove
the poison. So don't talk shit if you don't know what you're saying.
There's no taxonomic difference between this cashew and the one in the
supermarket.
@grokon90 "there has never been a reliabe study done that shows dietary fat
contributes to fat gain." Umm I don't need a "study".....I have a mirror &
COMMON SENSE... well... it's not so common these days. : /
Cashews always made me feel pretty awful, even when I tried them raw. I
guess this explains why there are so many fat raw foodists out there,
they're stuffing themselves with nuts and processed stuff.
That specific cashew, off of the cashew fruit is actually poisonous. So
don't talk shit if you don't know what your saying. Cashews on the other
hand are not poison. Big difference between the 2
its so ridiculous its sad nobody can judge about fruits because nearly
everybody eats unripe fruit and thinks they are ripe. Unripe fruit are
horrible. yellow bananas are totally unripe
there should be more fruit at the supermarket.. then it would be a lot
easier.. it's too hard to stick to when you can only get like what.. 20?
and most of them are low in calories. :(
I love how DR always says he's succeeding at riding "drug free" as if
riders who aren't are somehow getting an advantage from it. Wouldn't you
say it's the opposite Harley?
Hmm, I didn't know that about cashews. Why in the world didn't I know
that...??? :P Well, Im googling that, and learning new stuff every day xD
Thanks mait ;)
So we're gettin' to you are we? What do you mean by flake? Harley is way
beyond veg. Most still eat an un-natural, processed, refined, glutenous,
etc, diet.
Inspiring words near the end. Reminds me of getting back from the farmers'
market. So much discounted ripe fruit, and wondering where to start.
Hehehehehe!
Hi! Amanda here. Great to 'meet' you! Have you thought of submitting your
story to The Vegan magazine? You can send a pitch with a couple of photos
to the Editor, that would be great ;-) Are you doing anything special for
World Vegan Month, November? All the best!
Exactly - fitness and health takes time, also wiseness and education. There is no fast way, just consistency. The healthier and fitter we become, we discover more and more weaknesses and can improve endlessly. This is why life is freckin awesome !No need for any sort of bull testicle juice, instead of paying tons for that crap, just add a bit to the fruit and veggie budget and go organic.
