Let's Play XCOM Enemy Unknown: Episode 23 - The Other Ending
This is the continuation of my let's play of XCOM Enemy Unknown, which began in October of 2012. I am running the game in Windows 7 (64 bit) with a ...
I'm fairly certain this is the canon ending to XCOM. Based on the trailer
to the sequel, Firaxis intends for the aliens to successfully invade and
"assimilate" the Earth.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AC8qfi_NnTc
I've never seen this ending before. Until last night when XCOM 2 was
reveiled and people started saying that the "Bad ending" now made sense I
was like "There was a bad ending?"
I'm currently on my impossible-playthrough, so there's a good chance of me
seeing this ending in a near future for real. I've already lost 2 members
in my first month.... Guess they call it impossible for a reason.
+Wistbacka I don't envy you. I managed to do an impossible playthrough and an ironman playthrough as part of my efforts to get 100% achievement completion in Steam. I did it, but my wife was not impressed. Something tells me that doing 100% of the achievements in XCOM 2 might cost me a marriage so I might pass this time. :)
the last part of that ending really fits well with the entire plotline that
its the aliens just testing humanity.
shen makes it clear that they would have won by normal invasion easily, the
counciller always pauses when speaking and is hidden in darkness to hide
the look of mindcontrolled eyes.
since thin men are great at impersonating secret services it makes so much
sense for the council to actually be part of the aliens plan in the first
place.
+GITMASTERZ according to research, some of the aliens might just be allies or even slaves of the ethereals, it is 100% logical for the whole thing to be a test by the ethereals to see if humans are worth enslaving or just remove them for being useless for some master universal takeover they are planning.P.S I am not an alien nor mind controlled by one just so you know.
I always wondering the first time why he was like this in the game, always hiding in the shadows and never showing his face. The best thing is however is that it fits perfectly for xcom 2 cuz it's set up like homefront :)
+CykeOk Just saw that interview, seems like my original theory was right with XCOM losing within the first ten months of the war. I got confused with Jake Solomon saying something to the effect of "XCOM didn't lose, they just never stopped fighting." No, Jake, we lost, there's no weaving around that fact.
+RM From what I gathered from what Jake Solomon said, he implied that XCOM won however gradually lost support and was forced underground. Besides, the ending in this video cannot be canon since the Council Spokesman returns as heard in the trailer, leaving the only other canon ending to be the XCOM base defence cut scene which cannot be possible since that leads to XCOM's destruction.
+RM Hey RM, after reading the latest interviews and checking the sources for the statements about the Volunteer, I believe you are correct.Jake Solomon's statements that the Volunteer survived the Temple Ship destruction (by teleporting out using psychic power) are from Nov 2014. That would likely be before the plot and setting for XCOM2 was finalized. So we can look at them as alternate timelines. If you finish the XCOM1 campaign, humanity beats back the invaders in entirety, and scores a victory, and even the Volunteer survives. That's effectively the (happy) endpoint of that timeline. However, as we now know from the latest developer interviews, XCOM2 does NOT continue from the victory timeline. Instead, it follows on from a loss in XCOM1 (XCOM being defeated somewhere around March to May in the in-game calendar, I reckon). That also explains why the aliens have set up shop on Earth to experiment on humans; since the XCOM project did not last long enough for The New One (Volunteer) to arise, the aliens have to mess around with humans to artificially induce and identify a New One.
+Justiciar You're going have to cite that, because the latest IGN article with Jake Solomon has him directly stating they lost. Never made it past conventional weapons, the aliens came in overwhelming numbers and force, basically everybody's first attempt at Impossible Ironman etc etc. //www.ign.com/articles/2015/06/11/xcom-2s-bleak-future-why-impossible-iron-man-mode-is-canon-ign-first
Also, if you listen to the end game dialogue, it sounds like they're preparing for.. an external threat.. or something. They may be "bad guys", but they're trying to prepare all their races for even badder guys that are out there somewhere. If this is true, the XCOM franchise is gonna be in it for the long run!
+Dingus Joe Yup, our victory in the original game is canon.Don't forget that early in the game, Dr. Shen says that the aliens are so advanced that they could easily come full force and conquer Earth, and we would lose. The fact that they did not use a full scale attack means that they have different goals. As we later find out, they believe that humans are the best race they have encountered, their real goal is to find (or create) a perfect race, and the invasion was also a test. The Volunteer's victory shows that we passed. Now they've forced the Earth's governments into surrender, they're pretending to be benevolent, and they've moved in and started the next stage of their plan. And I guess in XCOM2 it's time to kick them out :D
+ChuckPalomo Well, I've got some good news for you. This ending isn't canon according to lead designer Jake Solomon. Apparently, after XCOM destroyed the temple ship (which your Volunteer teleported out of using his/her (presumably) psionic powers), the aliens kept attacking and XCOM never stopped fighting, however as time went on countries were more enticed to surrender and XCOM kept losing support until they were forced underground, which brings us to XCOM 2 and the current situation.
+Dingus Joe I dunno about you...but I know that I'll do one last Ironman Impossible playthrough right before XCOM 2 comes out.And I'll make sure to go down swinging!
+Ninjat126 Well, according to the facts, we lost the war within the timespan of 10 months. I've not tried speed running research and equipment but by the looks of it, we didn't get much past laser weaponry. Titan power armour? That's gone.Time to get your tactical genius back on.
The ending cutscene of XCOM enemy unknown. This video is dedicated to Colonel Khesskuh, Cpl Brock Bolmer, Cpl Philip Dindal, Pvt Alex Hill, Sgt Luna Wu, ...
Most of the time, you lose people for tactical risks (mostly early game).
If you manage to get a full squad of maxed out people (with psi abilities),
then you are unstoppable. The weapons only make a difference in getting
your men to that status. I lost roughly 13-20 guys early on, but never lost
anyone after I received the carapace armor. Just avoid taking too many
risks and you should be fine.
lol before i could record this though i lost my entire squad like 10 times
i only beat this on a fluke easily the hardest level to beat without the
right research. also this video was recorded on my normal, i have a
letsplay on my channel where i play on classic and tons more die.
LOL its the same way i finished my game- with a sniper. the shot was
crucial, if i had missed the shot my squad would have been wiped out by my
own heavy armed with plasma launcher. finished it with 1 try
After I got that scene I got a few seconds of the doc walking down a
hallway. I thought it was the start of a new cutscene, but it skipped. Is
there additional stuff after that?
I found it ironic that the game assigned you the nickname spike i almost
changed it to rarity but i figured spike was close enough without it being
overly obvious
Without anyone to report how the Volunteer saved mankind, I guess
everyone's going to assume Dr. Vahlen was just being overdramatic about the
black hole thing.
XCOM: Enemy Within Let's Play! Stylosa and Kirioth lead the worlds greatest XCOM squad out of England and into the jaws of an alien invasion in XCOM: ...
I'm quite surprised you didn't name Mental Fuck "Boris the Blade". I assume
you lads have seen and like Snatch/Lock Stock etc?
But as soon as you named Los Pallos, I ROARED with laughter.
As someone who's married to a Russian. I can safely say that Russians aren't as gungho as people think, but for the sake of the shear fun and entertainment. All I can picture Mental Fuck saying each time he launches a rocket is "Dasvidaniya motherfucker!" (or if you want it in proper Russian: "Dasvidaniya ublyudok!"
XCOM 2 - Everything We Know So Far
XCOM 2 has just been annouced! I've gathered up all the information we have on XCOM 2, rolled it into a nice handy video with some of my personal ...
I like the Idea of the "we lost and are trying to take the world back"
idea, but my problem with it is this, I remember playing nightmare
creatures on PS1 and defeating Adam Croly at the end, then in the prologue
of nightmare creatures 2 it explained that Adam Croly came back from the
dead and killed the protagonists from the first game off camera. You know
what that did, it made all the struggle and hardship of the first game
pointless to the point that the first game might as well not even exist.
That's the problem I have with this game right off the bat, it
retroactively makes it pointless to play the first game because in the end
they retcon your victory and start you from square one. I know it's a
nitpick and I fully expect this game to be good, because I adored Enemy
Unknown, but still it would at least make sense to make the victory in
Enemy unknown cannon.
+Chakrit Watkins it would be better if a bigger party of aliens showed up after we destroyed the temple ship(remember the ethereals talking about a danger? no?) and they destroyed all of our shit and now we are back to conventional weapons with nothing but a ship. I think that would make sense
It would be kind of boring though if the story was just "we won and for some reason they are back" this is much more interesting and allows for some interesting new gameplay ideas
Wait.... in vanilla Xcom EW my 4 Soldiers Mec and Meat Shield Shiv could
litterally take on 791 Aliens without a scratch. In Long war however my 8
Soldiers my Mec and Meat Shield SHIV could take on 3061 Aliens without a
scratch. After the 7 health lost by Crissallid they took on 356 more before
I though they couldn't take it and I moved the VIP. :P How the hell did we
lose?
I really would have loved they would get rid of the whole "4 dudes against
18 aliens" thing, and make the warfare a little more large-scaled, but it
seems like they haven't in this one...
+Kurt Henderson I think you have to keep in mind what XCOM is really about. In these games, you aren't supposed to do everything at once, but be discreet about it. Maybe what you'd see instead is that when you are gaining influence in a city or country, you see more people not following the systems rather than actually conforming to the aliens system. Rather than rebelling, they'd likely be slowly changing from the conforming ways that the aliens set on us.That way when the conversion happens in an area, it can be all the cities converting at once so it's easier to defend, because defending a single city against basically the entire world is retarded. You know what I'm saying?
True, but it would be cool if you could like ..control rebelling citizens or whatever, or incite full-scale rebellions in Cities and conquer the City, and then make Soldiers in the City and gain men that way. Like in Godfather II, right, you take a place and make guards, and then you could maybe send those guards to other rackets, I can't exactly remember. Maybe not play the huge battles, but make it so you can initiate them. Sure, play the tiny Covert Ops with like 4 dudes, but really give the game the feel of having a rebellion take place. I dunno, am I ranting, or is this a good idea?
Not terrorism. You're trying to rally a resistance against a force bent on the enslavement of humanity. Terrorism is where a group is intentionally causing mass terror through destruction, hence the name. Here, you'll be fighting to uncover the alien agenda to the populace while salvaging resources, recruiting soldiers and striking against the oppressive Advent.
A great video, good guidelines, however there is one mistake and a note of
interest.
You can start in ANY country, not just Europe. I personally have always
played in Africa, yet I am still able to finish the whole month without
losing a single country, so please ignore when he states that you should be
in Europe.
If you play with the second wave option which randomizes rewards from alien
abductions, it is possible to get 5, even 6 or so engineers, negating the
need to build a workshop in order to obtain enough engineers for a
satellite uplink. Although this is a gamble, and you may end up only
obtaining 2 engineers instead.
There is a strict formula to be followed for this to work out well, it
seems. It is critical to get the UFO mission before only 20 days are left
till the council report. I've been trying to make this work for the past 10
games at least, restarting from scratch every single time, and it seems
that 25 days are the minimum for the abduction, while 20 is the minimum for
UFO. Otherwise there appears to be a lack of time or funds for satellites
or the uplink facility... I love the challenge though :)
--mission till the second report came and i lost the game i had all the
randomizing second wave options , red fog and for the greater good enabled
, although i don't like the random dmg output coupling in with my soldiers
only making 1 out of 4 shots while the aliens make 3 out of 4 shots and
have a much higher damage output to randomize on often resulting in 1 shot
kills on my half covered soldiers from across the map.... how would anyone
recommend i play this game at it's hardest difficulty?
ooooh so that's why i wasn't able to build a workshop , cause i didn't get
any extra engineers...... so was this done with any second wave settings or
just plain impossible? cause i just had my first go at it (after beating
normal difficulty with little trouble (which is my only previous xcom
experience i've had) , didn't need to save reload or anything , and only
lost 1 country to chaos from that) , and first i lost the first mission ,
then i beat it with 1 survivor and lost every other----
great explanation. I've figured this out as well. I attempted this strategy
on my own second attempt at my Let's Play Impossible Ironman. I did not get
the crashed ship until the 15th or March, so I was only able to build 2
satellites. In the next two months I deployed 5 and then 6 in the third
month, only loosing the initial 2 countries in the first month. Now if I
can only figure out a good strategy for capturing aliens ( failed to
capture the Outsider in my last 3 crashed UFO attempts.)
Hi Costin, I know this is really late, but I realised that the random event
generator is really not random at all. I saved after completing the opening
mission and the first abduction mission but before scanning for activities.
No matter how many times I reload my save, the event date the next mission
occurs NEVER changes. Only the rewards are randomized. Do you recommend
restarting a whole new game then?
I've found a good strategy to capturing aliens is to use the heavie's
suppression ability. You moved your support guy with the arc thrower in to
position, suppress with the heavy, then when the next turn comes around if
none of your people are too close the alien will end it's turn without
doing anything. Then all you do is move in your support and stun away.
Yes I do, as far as I know about XCOM it doesn't work to reload a save to
change what missions you will get or what actions the aliens will take. I
think if you save just before the first mission end, say just before
killing the last enemy and then reload you should get different abductions
missions....I think.
After my 9th or so attempt I finally got through the first mission 1
casualty, Got a Alien panic mission then abduction then waited waited
waited.. finally got a UFO mission and bought the satellites. 20 days til
council report, 20 days 1 hour til my satellites are built. LMAO fml.
Xcom was trolling me earlier with 4 snipers on one mission......... I was
like -_- what i'ma gonna do. So basically snipers= riflemen with the
snapshot ability. I just do what I always do when playing America in
Company of heros......FUCKING RIFE SPAM XD
omfg i just got this game got really far and just had like 8 nations leave
and i didnt know how to make satelites now i gotta start over...i had full
laser weapons and majors....fml
LOL at least you got that far! 1/3 the time my team gets destroyed first
mission, and then if I do win none of the times so far have I had an
abduction mission before march 8th.
You have 165 credits if you start at Europe. But it is 275 credits if you
start at North America. Get it for extra money at the first month to build
all the stuff.
