How to Break Loose or Separate Stuborn Ball Joints
This video shows you how to remove that stubborn ball joint nut; plus it shows you how to break the ball joint loose from the lower control arm. It doesn't show ...
Nice vid, thanks for taking the time to post! A tip for visitors who only
have a hammer to work with: if you *must* hammer upwards on the ball joint
stud, don't hammer on a bare stud! You could easily mushroom the tip
(giggity?!) or otherwise mash the threads, making it difficult or
impossible to put the castle nut back on. Instead, use a nut and thread it
on to the ball joint stud so the stud and nut are flush as one flat
surface, then hammer. Not the best way to do it, but sometimes works.
I once removed SPARK PLUGS using a hammer... seems like all a mechanic
needs in his toolbox is a hammer, now days! LOL. All kidding aside.... you
had the proper tool to remove the ball joint.... so why use a crude method
such as striking with a hammer? Doesn't make any sense to me.
do not say swing that hammer harder lol. Some control arms.steering
knuckles are soft aluminum and have corrosion that bind the ball joint
inside. The use of that tool with a propane torch will prevent damage to
that knuckle
Thanks for your helpful tip. I'm sorry if I left out the part about putting
the castle nut back on when you hit it with a hammer (I don't know if I
said that in the video or not).
Just went to this place in my hometown called Indy tire. They said total cost would be around $600 for the ball joint something else and a realignment.
+fockyoumang Edit: I stated comment wrong, $1191.94 Included the Sway bar and both ball joints. The ball joints themselves are $895.97. Still kinda high imo.
+fockyoumang yeah I'm starting to get really freaked out because I've been researching it for a minute and my car has been speaking for the past week so I'm really trying to find a place or a mechanic who could do it for the best price
+Queen Mary Bella do not do this to your vehicle. It's very very very dangerous, it will only end in an absolute disaster. 1200$ for an explorer ball joint is insane. Call done other spots and at least get a quote. I don't know how other states are but in Massachusetts, the repair shop cannot go part a certain price they have you on the quote
There's nothing wrong with spraying a ball joint with some cleaner to stop
it from sqeaking. If a ball joint is going to fail on you, it's because
deterioration. WD40 isn't going to make it happen any sooner, cmon. Problem
with it is that it doesn't solve anything.
Olive oil, never thought of that.....lol
But if you're going to go thru the work to get under the car, quit being a
cheap ass and just go to any part store and buy a $20 ball joint and spend
the 45 minutes to replace it. Even the cheapies will last you 30k like the
one il be replacing again this weekend.
Well...that will stop the sqeaking for about 6-12 hours but, you need to
replace them when it gets like that or you may find yourself in a bad
situation on the highway bro!...those joints will snap in half at highway
speeds possibly killing you and some other innocent motorists. Not good
advice, but I get your concept..CHANGE THOSE NOISY BALL JOINTS! Sounds and
smells are warning before destruction.
Anytime any ball joints squeak, that means they are worn or wearing out. The sqeaking is a sign to get them replaced. They will eventually snap apart and hopefully your not at highway speeds! Can't stress enough.....change those squeaking ball joints!
+Chris Tashik I feel like the Factory Ball joints Toyota puts on don't last my tundra has 210,000miles runs great just Suspension starting to wear which is fine most American Vehicles you'd have to switch the engine out by now so yah, squeaky ball joint sucks but ain't that bad #tundragang
