Nice vid, thanks for taking the time to post! A tip for visitors who only have a hammer to work with: if you *must* hammer upwards on the ball joint stud, don't hammer on a bare stud! You could easily mushroom the tip (giggity?!) or otherwise mash the threads, making it difficult or impossible to put the castle nut back on. Instead, use a nut and thread it on to the ball joint stud so the stud and nut are flush as one flat surface, then hammer. Not the best way to do it, but sometimes works.

I once removed SPARK PLUGS using a hammer... seems like all a mechanic needs in his toolbox is a hammer, now days! LOL. All kidding aside.... you had the proper tool to remove the ball joint.... so why use a crude method such as striking with a hammer? Doesn't make any sense to me.
https://gp6.googleusercontent.com/-CGUJP0AHeYs/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/yvyhVse6VIM/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
do not say swing that hammer harder lol. Some control arms.steering knuckles are soft aluminum and have corrosion that bind the ball joint inside. The use of that tool with a propane torch will prevent damage to that knuckle
https://gp5.googleusercontent.com/-Spfvk0gP9Xw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/RF_tjD28dbY/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
Thanks for your helpful tip. I'm sorry if I left out the part about putting the castle nut back on when you hit it with a hammer (I don't know if I said that in the video or not).
https://gp5.googleusercontent.com/-qn_M29y8VYE/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/Z8B9qhbJnqQ/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
what about putting a jack under the the exposed ball joint shaft and lifting the car up?? will the weight of the vehicle press out the ball joint??
https://gp6.googleusercontent.com/-_mSRI4slKN8/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/GCq8hKwM4lM/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
Agreed! A lot of people wouldn't know how to get the ball joint out of the knuckle itself once it's dislodged from the lower control arm.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8hQbgZd-Gb8/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABM/AhPn-Y_egqU/photo.jpg?sz=64
The hammer work well separating the lower ball joint. You need to know where to hit and how to swing. I can show have to do it
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-BVHqyfn4aUY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAHc/b-s7Nw44TWI/photo.jpg?sz=64
which would work better, heating the joint or using the hammer or using that tool from harbor freight? thanks for the video.

You make it look so easy, but hey thanks for showing us how to do it like a pro.....thanks buddy

You're supposed to hit the hammer on the control arm not the dust shield. No wonder it didn't work

Leave the nut on the bolt to prevent damaging the thread.

Tire Plus told me it will cost $1191.94 to repair the ball joints in my Ford Explorer. Made me sad a little but I can't stand that noise.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9mg2K1GK8Kg/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAI0/uqD8xmu9Ekk/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Ryan Stokes blah haha man they be raping the public! I charge 100 for both sides it's super easy to do takes 1 hour
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
Just went to this place in my hometown called Indy tire. They said total cost would be around $600 for the ball joint something else and a realignment.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-cY4MyjotT6g/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAE0/3kBi0TuHrJQ/photo.jpg?sz=64
+fockyoumang Edit: I stated comment wrong, $1191.94 Included the Sway bar and both ball joints. The ball joints themselves are $895.97. Still kinda high imo.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_juRgcMB6qM/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAyU/XEfoxG6KTck/photo.jpg?sz=64
+fockyoumang yeah I'm starting to get really freaked out because I've been researching it for a minute and my car has been speaking for the past week so I'm really trying to find a place or a mechanic who could do it for the best price
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-jiE5_12vfWo/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAJY/RtXcyz_GEec/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Queen Mary Bella do not do this to your vehicle. It's very very very dangerous, it will only end in an absolute disaster. 1200$ for an explorer ball joint is insane. Call done other spots and at least get a quote. I don't know how other states are but in Massachusetts, the repair shop cannot go part a certain price they have you on the quote
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_juRgcMB6qM/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAyU/XEfoxG6KTck/photo.jpg?sz=64
lmaoo and I was going to go to tires plus
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_juRgcMB6qM/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAyU/XEfoxG6KTck/photo.jpg?sz=64
oh hell na... I have an explorer too that's squeezing
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-jiE5_12vfWo/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAJY/RtXcyz_GEec/photo.jpg?sz=64
That's insane. You have to go somewhere else
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
There's nothing wrong with spraying a ball joint with some cleaner to stop it from sqeaking. If a ball joint is going to fail on you, it's because deterioration. WD40 isn't going to make it happen any sooner, cmon. Problem with it is that it doesn't solve anything. Olive oil, never thought of that.....lol But if you're going to go thru the work to get under the car, quit being a cheap ass and just go to any part store and buy a $20 ball joint and spend the 45 minutes to replace it. Even the cheapies will last you 30k like the one il be replacing again this weekend.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-95Uo2kgiNJU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAIk/8oE7wg48IUM/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jeremy Ingle wd 40 will thin out the grease and make it run out leaving the ball joint dry it most definately could cause premature failure
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wxfQ3ZGct_M/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAA4o/iVCRqGVkm10/photo.jpg?sz=64
Well...that will stop the sqeaking for about 6-12 hours but, you need to replace them when it gets like that or you may find yourself in a bad situation on the highway bro!...those joints will snap in half at highway speeds possibly killing you and some other innocent motorists. Not good advice, but I get your concept..CHANGE THOSE NOISY BALL JOINTS! Sounds and smells are warning before destruction.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wxfQ3ZGct_M/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAA4o/iVCRqGVkm10/photo.jpg?sz=64
Anytime any ball joints squeak, that means they are worn or wearing out. The sqeaking is a sign to get them replaced. They will eventually snap apart and hopefully your not at highway speeds! Can't stress enough.....change those squeaking ball joints!

+Chris Tashik I feel like the Factory Ball joints Toyota puts on don't last my tundra has 210,000miles runs great just Suspension starting to wear which is fine most American Vehicles you'd have to switch the engine out by now so yah, squeaky ball joint sucks but ain't that bad #tundragang
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
