+Andrew Dickinson Wouldn't adding 4 radials the same length as the vertical element achieve the same results as a counterpoise? This in essence would be a ground plane. Two other practical alternatives would be twin sticks mounted vertically or an inverted "V" dipole. The number of 11 meter verticals available in the US these days is rather thin. Radio shack discontinued base station CB antennas in the late 1990's.
Well, on ham radio there is, but with cb you get three voice transmissions. Upper and lower sidebands, and AM the newer cbs look cool with digital displays and all, but they are the same as the as the ones in the 70s (well they might have improved on receve, but the concept is the same)
+Rick McCombs YES YOU ARE A 100% RIGHT IT HAS TO BE A METAL GROUND TO GET A GOOD SWR OF 1.5 ARE LESS AND THE OHMS NEEDS TO BE AS CLOSE TO 50 OHMS AS YOU CAN GET IT. GOOGLE 440 CB SHOP AND READ THE REVIEWS. ON FACE BOOK.
+Rick McCombs Or maybe 9' of wire hanging down connected to the mounting screw as a counter poise. The whip is only half of the ant. The vehicle is the other half. Thanks!

Those days were a blast! Shooting DX, having 'eyeballs' in parking lots,
local roundtables... CB's were the ORIGINAL social media! I had a
Realistic Navaho base, a President 'John Q', and a Lafayette Telsat SSB 50
as my first radios. When I got my Ham license, I converted the Lafayette
to work on 10 meters SSB, and worked all over the world running 12 watts!
I miss those days bigtime.
+AudiophileTubes Organizing weekly "fox hunts" kept your tracking skills sharp and kept us amused, shooting DX on SSB never lost it's appeal but AM is as good as dead here in Australia.
I started late in CB life, back in 1985 (call sign Jupiter 1 or 4, I can't
remember). Even back then when I was 16 and in a small city like Brisbane,
AM and U/LSB was noisy with chatter of all sort like the boys calling out
on 11 for any YLs available to talk to.Now those long haired tight wearing
jeans YLs are all middle aged and older. After over two decades I set up my
old Realistic TRC-451 to see what it is like now but I was disappointed. 27
MHZ CB in Brisbane and Sydney are dead quiet, no life at all and the life
it once had is nothing more then memories.
It didn't start with truckers, 27 Mc. CB started in 1958 with small
business owners such as local heating oil delivery trucks, farms and
families as well as hobbyists who were interested in electronic
communications and socializing. It was a lot of fun then when users were
better behaved and respectful of one another. It was similar to Ham radio
and was a gateway to Ham radio for many. I was on in the early 60s and
enjoyed meeting many CBers for an 'eyeball' and at 'coffee breaks'.
+Claudius True about truckers, but the 'state of the art' of technology helped that along with the availability of solid-state miniaturized rigs that operated directly on 12 VDC. Early CB rigs employed vacuum tubes, were bigger, and were not as well-suited to mobile operation as transistorized gear. Sure, we had them in our cars, but you couldn't talk long w/o draining your battery if the engine wasn't running. I'm sure CB still is an important tool, but like everything else, it has changed over the years.
"CB started in 1958 with small business owners". Correct. Truckers only got heavily involved in CB in the early 1970s when the 55mph highway speed limit was imposed so they could tip each other off about police radar traps.

CB radio 101 for Preppers and Survival
I discuss the basics about CB radios and how they can benefit preppers. For less than $100 it could save you one day. Mine has save me on a few occasions.
I'm a truck driver and there was a bad accident on the Ohio turnpike and
truck driver will let you know what lane to be in when there is an accident
ahead and what mile marker so you're not sitting there thinking "where is
this accident at"
Meh, I will take dorky any day if it will save my rear. They make some shorter antennas that want look as "dorky" on a car but will not get out as good either. You can do what I did at one time and just left the antenna hooked to my radio but not mounted on my car and just took it out and stuck it on the roof when I wanted to use it. Took all of 60 seconds to pull over and grab it and stick it on top. Also while not great they do make a CB antenna that looks and mounts like a hard mount phone antenna to the glass.
+gary warmanen My kind of guy I like to listen to when driving. :)
Magnum S3 350 10 Meter Export AM FM CB Radio video overview
//www.cbradiomagazine.com - This is a video overview of the new Magnum S3 350 (350 watt radio). The radio is a 10 Meter model that can be modified for ...
It never ceases to amaze me how stupid these MFGs are in creating an
incomplete radio. Who is going to spend this big money for big power and
not have SSB? It's foolish for Magnum when they could have included SSB and
probably tripled their sales.
well funny how the damned foolish magnum is sold out of the 350's in all 3 s3 s6 s9 you can't find one anywhere

+blackandblue10 The way I see it. If the hams don't want cber's to bleed all over the place. They should help them with tips and tricks in how to get more out of there rigs. In other words keep the peace between the two.
