This woman is lying. I have a junior and senior in high school and they are both failing common core math. They both scored well in math before common core.

+Saunya Harris If you don't mind me asking, what kinds of things are they learning (have a niece in that just started school and am constantly helping her with her homework)? I'm in my 30's now, and even when I was in school, they just tried to force us to learn procedures to do stuff -- without actually explaining the concept. They would be like "This is how you do it!" Is there another way to do this? "No!". Basically, they acted like you were an idiot if you didn't pick up stuff in a day or two (at most).Even when I was in school, they did studies that proved that only something like 33% of students learned through traditional methods. As a "humanities person" that's good at everything but math (even science -- until math comes up -- have gotten much better now that I'm not in school - ha), I like Common Core (from what I've learned about it so far) because it seems to focus on illustrating concepts and then teaching kids a variety of ways to solve problems (what S.T.E.M. is all about).I've learned that, in order for me to understand procedures, I need to first understand the concepts behind them. Once I do, I very rarely make a mistake because I'm able to think my way through problems. I also never forget how to do it and can take various approaches. When I saw a math problem in my schooldays, I used to think "Oh, crap!" Now, I think about the funnest approach to take. I mean, I actually find it enjoyable -- like a hobby. I guess whether or not someone likes Common Core depends on how their brain works when it comes to mathematics. Even though it works for me, I don't think it should be something forced on kids. It should be optional. If your kids were excelling the old way, I think they should be allowed to do that. I mean, the whole point is to have options to help the greatest amount of people.

Kids in America don't need Common Core. They need their old curriculum and they need discipline and they need to want to learn. There is a lack of motivation in this nation because we have a bunch of Justin Beiber's and Miley Cyrus wanna be's as our nation's youth. They all can't be performers and it's time to wake your kids up to the offenses happening against the citizens and their children. We are not allowed to discipline our children but the schools and police can conduct themselves in pure deception against them, and they do. On the news, a school in Indiana or Illinois, was found to have separated the boys from the girls in separate room and had the children take off their pants to check their bottom halves of their bodies without the parents permission. A school in Manhattan was found to force children to wear a pressure cuff while being asked over 600 questions. This was also done without the parents permission. The cuffs left bruises on the kids arms and this is how the parents found out.

+Dominick Mas The problem with that theory is that everyone doesn't learn the same way, and the old way hasn't worked. It put everybody into one box. If it worked so well, I'm sure there would be more people in S.T.E.M. With that said, Common Core shouldn't be forced on students. If some students learn better the old way, let them do that. If others prefer CC, let them have at it. Do kids these days lack respect and all that? Heck Yeah. They aren't scared of crap. I'm glad I don't have any (have to help raise niece and nephew, though) - ha.

i don't know a whole lot about common core math, nor am i an educator, but i do find some things in the responses to common core math. those in support of common core math seem to be much more open minded and thoughtful in their responses. those most opposed to common core maths come across as closed minded to willfully ignorant at best and mentally unstable at worst. i have a hard time taking anyone seriously when they attack common core as a conspiracy to intentionally dumb down children and bring about communism. i find those working with their thinking caps on to be more trustworthy than those wearing tin foil hats.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hXSgmQkLstY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAw/Vz26zcJohzY/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Doug Kyou can tone troll and grammar troll when you can't deny most of the arguments made online against common core math are based on ignorance or conspiracy. it says more about the little you have to say than it does about me. i don't capitalize letters when writing informally on the internet. so fucking what?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hXSgmQkLstY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAw/Vz26zcJohzY/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Doug Ki didn't say anything about anyone for simply disagreeing with me. there really are people who are responding to the issue of common core math out of ignorance. those who respond to something they don't understand by insisting they don't like it and won't support it really are basing their decisions on ignorance. they really are closed minded. this is not name name calling, it is applying labels accurately. the same goes for labelling those unstable who believe common core is a devious communist conspiracy to make people stupid. are you tone trolling the people who come up with that bullshit too? i don't think so.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hXSgmQkLstY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAw/Vz26zcJohzY/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Doug Kno, doug. you are just being obnoxious. you wouldn't even get points for effort because you didn't attempt to topic Ro K asked about. you build up a straw person argument then knocked it down.i started by admitting i would not be the best person to explain what Ro K wants to have explained. i am not an educator so i am not going to pretend to be something i am not. if i were to sit down with a person (in real life) with a pencil and paper i think i could explain most of lesson you didn't address at all. i don't want to try doing so on youtube, especially because the lesson plan (which is for 1st grade teachers, not first grade students) asks to " us[e] concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place values, properties of operations,".
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hXSgmQkLstY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAw/Vz26zcJohzY/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Ro Kthis is part a lesson plan for teachers of six year olds, not a lesson for six year olds. you want me to teach you how to be a teacher?

Well, I guess the world should just put the cue in the rack and wait for the end because 2 + 2 = Feelings. It's gobbledygook. A decade from now, when Michael Bay's asteroid is on a collision course with Earth, common core neo-math nerds won't solve the problem fast enough for President Morgan Freeman (I'm keenly aware I've cross referenced competing late 90's disaster films) to train a rag-tag crew of everymen to impregnate said asteroid with a nuclear payload. Although, thanks to Obama's socialist obsessions on foreign policy in the middle east President Freeman would probably need to negotiate with Iran for the payload. I hope Chuck Norris is still alive when that day comes...the asteroid would politely excuse itself and be on it's way.

Ms. Jo Boaler, please demonstrate your mathematics skill?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
read some of her books, taker her class, google her....
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Rgt5sHhXv3s/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABc/Nu_5o29TMac/photo.jpg?sz=64
+bill Y. You didn't pose a particular question; it sounded like some sort of request that wasn't meant to be met. That said, have you read any of her books? And if you have actual questions, while this wouldn't be the ideal place to post them, I might offer some ideas. I love explaining why division by 0 is undefined, for example.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OznmhJoz_JY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAMU/_affoAyHPBQ/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Michael Goldenberg I was hoping I could learn some real teaching strategies on helping kids, like explaining "divided by 0" or (-)*(-) from prof Jo B. I am disappointed. Plenty theory but no real problem solving example. On the other hand, Liping Ma is a much better helper, real life example and useful skills.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Rgt5sHhXv3s/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABc/Nu_5o29TMac/photo.jpg?sz=64
+bill Y. Talk about an empty "challenge." In what manner would you accept a demonstration of mathematical skill?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OznmhJoz_JY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAMU/_affoAyHPBQ/photo.jpg?sz=64
Jo Boaler has showed lots of theories and ideas. Where can I find some videos that she actually taught a math subject? any math subject? For now, it seems she is like a film critic, but not a film maker.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Rgt5sHhXv3s/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABc/Nu_5o29TMac/photo.jpg?sz=64
+bill Y. You kept calling out Jo Boaler to "show her math skills," so I felt that turnabout was fair play. I was quite confident you weren't going to be my go-to guy for explaining surreal numbers. I'm a big fan of Prof. Tao, but I don't think he's about to jump to a request from me for tutoring. There are, however, other knowledgeable sources. Now, I suggest you recognize that mathematics educators like Prof. Boaler are quite qualified to discuss the teaching and learning of K-12 mathematics. Asking them to "demonstrate" or "prove" their knowledge of mathematics to you is rude and an utter waste of time. One doesn't get a Ph.D in math education without knowing mathematics well beyond that of the average undergraduate math major.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OznmhJoz_JY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAMU/_affoAyHPBQ/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Michael Goldenberg You asked the wrong person. I am neither a mathematician, nor an educator. I am not a product of American school systems. As a parent, I tutor my own kids math and make sure they are above common core math level and able to compete with Chineae or Singaporean. If you have a tricky word problem, I can help. For high level pure math, call Terrance Tao.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Rgt5sHhXv3s/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABc/Nu_5o29TMac/photo.jpg?sz=64
+bill Y. You're no doubt a professional mathematician, Bill. How about explaining surreal numbers. I've been having some difficulty grasping them and I'm confident from your posts that you'd be the kind of person who could help me out.

You neglect the fact that this system promotes students who can keep up with it, and puts others on back burners and all the rest in the refuse pile. Common Core makes sense, but is absolutely worthless. Instead of ensuring America has an equal opportunity for all students, all it does is "breed" out the supposedly poor students.

Most people who don't like common core knows nothing about it. Parents who don't like it don't know anything about it, or don't understand the subject well enough to help the students. In the math area it really is getting children to think critically and getting them ready for more advanced math. For years all I have been hearing is people complaining about math classes just telling people how to solve the problem and not why that's the way. Now they are learning why and complain about it. Saying common core is telling you how to teach is the biggest lie ever. It does no such thing! Read the standards!!!
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-xOjh5Q-PCdg/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAFU/5D0_WijuUpE/photo.jpg?sz=64
Common core may not be perfect, but in alot of ways it is how they teach math at a science level. and 21 is not a young age of graduating.  It is the average age of graduating.  Also in these 3rd world countries, they are teaching critical thinking.  Critical thinking is one of the most important qualities that employers want, in higher paying jobs.  Ya jobs at McDonald my not care about critical thinking. However, want to go to college? They care about it, want to get a amazing job? Odds are they care.  Saying that other countries do not care about critical thinking is dead wrong.  Here are the facts. Common Core is not perfect, but it does promote critical thinking, mainly in the high school level.  Also, the United States education has been going down hill for over 40 years.  So what we have been doing (which is memorization, not critical thinking) is  not working.  Common Core is the an attempt to fix it, and it is not the worst attempt.  If you do not like it, how about you go out, find a solution to the falling education system in the United States and try to get it into the school system.  I see that you are still in high school, so I hope that, in the little time you have left in high school, I hope you learn just how important critical thinking is.  And the part of most educators do not understand it, that is because those people do not understand their area well enough, at least for the math area.  I have read most of the math area, and it is not hard to understand if you have an understanding of mathematics.  Some of the people who my be having trouble with it, may be having trouble because they did not major in the area they are trying to teach. They may of just took the test so that they can teach it.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
As a high schooler in the public school system, critical thinking is nothing. It's straight bullshit. There are currently third world countries AHEAD of our country in means of education. Their school buildings may not have running water or electricity, but they sure as hell are not feeding their children bullshit math problems that take 10 steps to solve when it could be solved in just 2 the standard way. Common core may help critical thinking but critical thinking is not what we need. The young men and women in India who are graduating at the young ages of 21 and 22 and going straight into jobs in the real world were not taught critical thinking. They chose a field to work in, and in school, they only took classes that would help push them to the goal of going into their feild. We use so much time to teach our students to be "well-rounded" when all it is really doing is pushing us educationally behind other countries that we have been in wars with, and been in debt to. The problem with common core is that all throughout your school career, you are taught math and science in a way that is not taught at the college level. The first day of a college lecture that child will be fully unprepared to keep up with the rigorous, fast paced Professor who doesn't even take a moment to breathe. This is pushing our country behind and to not see this is ridiculous. Maybe with true understanding it is a wonderful system. But if the majority educators who have been teaching for years don't even understand it, what is the point of continuing to force it on everyone?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
If your not a student taking these classes with these standards you have no clue how bad this is.

Apparently you are as idiotic as she is because you totally misunderstood what I said.  I said ALL she wants is for students to be able to solve problems NOT actually learn how to think.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ve8kUcDR1pw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAACA/n6hKC88H9Ng/photo.jpg?sz=64
You're the idiot. Math teaches students to be analytical (using logic and reason to solve both complex and simple problems via processes). The humanities teach students to be creative and critical thinkers. An "educated" student must be analytical, critical and creative thinkers.

After careful study we see Common Core not as a “shift”, not as a messiah, and not as a total solution. David Coleman and other authors of Common Core are mistaken in their premise and call for American teachers to shift their teaching practices. This false premise stems from faulty studies, genuine desire to provide students good educational opportunities, and opportunist motives to make money. Google article entitled "The Common Core Shift: Testing Errors and Parent Guide"

What's telling is how many first generation immigrants to America do so well financially. Without understanding the language or being subjected to 12 years of indoctrination, they scoop up low hanging fruit by the bushel load. They never even bother to fill out an application to work for some corporation, knowing they wouldn't stand a chance, instead they buy liquor stores, Subway Shops or 7/11's They run nail salons, auto repair garages and drive taxis. American children don't know the first thing about starting a business since the entire focus of their education is to "pad your resume" and get hired by someone else. This was done by design, the last thing corporate America wants is competition from it's citizens. It's really quite sad.
