so tired of people thinking any and all fighters need to, have to or even
want to join UFC. MMA is nothing but a fighting sport JUST LIKE boxing,
kickboxing, sanda and muay thai. Some have stricter rules than others,
whatever, you pratice what you like: some people like to be versatile,
somoe like specializing. Guess what, the average boxer is the best at
boxing, the average kickboxer the best at kickboxing, the average wrestler
the best at wrestling etc etc. Some people are successful crossing over,
some are not, some are not even interested in doing so. And why should they
have to? To appease you people that like keyboard fighting over who's the
stronger one? lol. it's like theorycrafting about 100m sprinters and their
matchup against marathon runners, pointless.
tl:dr being, i don't think they are making an effort for it to be this way, i believe they are simply not making an effort in changing how it currently is (and from their businessman perspective, why would they, they're getting huge profits and growing popularity after all).
i agree on you there, the mma world (mostly, fans) often does not realize the debt it holds to the traditional martial arts they like to make fun of, which is quite the paradox. The only difference is, i wasn't really expecting them to, i guess...The funny thing is, they are starting to have to catch up as more and more fighters with traditional backgrounds (other than bjj which basically dominated the first UFCs, as i'm told, mainly by being unknown to opponents, though i'm not sure we could call BJJ traditional) are finding success. That being said, i don't think much can be done about oversaturation of "americanized fighters", by which i assume you mainly mean wrestlers, unless they specifically went out of their way to actively seek talents elsewhere and persuade that talent to cross over, which means paying more than they mean to, probably.Thing is, martial arts (in the broadest sense) are deeply linked to a country's culture: in japan they're often taught karate in school and judo in the police forces, i hear; in korea they naturally train taekwondo. In thailand even poor kids train dangerously hard in hope for a brighter future. In china they split between their multiple traditional, mainly for-demostration arts, and the more practical sanda. In europe we might have boxing teams at schools, though it does not appear to be as widespread as those national sports. And in america, as for "fighting" sports...they used to wrestle mainly (all those college competitions and stuff like that), i guess, before the recent widespread of mma, so it's natural that most american fighters come from a wrestling background. And like it or not mma in its current form is an american creation so it's only natural that most fighters are americans, thus probably wrestlers, or else coming from the americanized version of their relative martial art. The best fighers of the other cultures are likely to be going in their respective country favoured art's competitions instead. Now i was gonna write more but i just realized it's approaching essay-level already, lol, so i'll leave it at that.
+Andrea Castellani I think you have me wrong, I don't think that people should "have" to cross over either. But the point that I am making is that the UFC in particular has all the resources in the world available to entice fighters from all disciplines to come into the fold but they choose to pocket the cash instead and offer a watered down, over Americanized product that is basically an affront to the term martial arts in mixed martial arts. This form of "martial arts" is everywhere, there are two gyms in the town I live in alone and let me tell you it is a veritable joke, there is no purity to it, no reverence for the cultures of the disciplines that are employed. As someone who has watched MMA for a long time it just bothers me that this is the direction that it has taken.
ok man, believe your cospiracy theory if you want. i believe in the simplest reason: most top level kickboxers are simply not interested because they would need to a adapt to a new environment and learn a decent grappling game if they want to survive. And they have no incentive to, being already top level in their own sport. Some actually tried, and went back to kickboxing, like Raymond Daniels. Or is he not a good enough martial artist, having THREE 3rd dan balck belts, being undefeated in sports karate and an impressive record in kickboxing too ? Let's be honest: how many champions are there in UFC that haven''t trained in at least one between BJJ, wrestling, judo and similar stuff?it doesn't need to be their best weapon, at all, but a decent minimum is required. And as it should have been clear by my first post, i'm not even a fan of MMA. I'm simply saying different fighting sports are like different athletic specialties. If you're top level at one, only reason for switching is being offered too much money to refuse or looking for a harder challenge if you've got no other opponents.
+Andrea Castellani Could not disagree more. I think there is a concerted effort being made by the brass of the UFC to not let real martial artists like Buakaw in. Half of the UFC is wrestlers who have added rudimentary striking techniques, that is not martial arts. Or Americanized BJJ schooled fighters. It is really pretty pathetic what the UFC is willing to call martial arts nowadays.
+Andrea Castellani I agree but just saying:Thai people dont give a shit about MMA/UFC and probably dont even know what that is.Also Muay Thai is a huge part in their culture and like Buakaw said he wants to represent Thailand in international Muay Thai/K1.
+Gobang Gocir Not enough. He aint' even close to bald.
