Dr. Brian Mowll discusses blood glucose challenge testing

+Valerie N That is a great question as it is something I struggle with. I can have a fasting BG between 70 and 80 and, eat about 50 g. of carbs a day (95% low GI veggies with some berries). Each meal generally does a minimal bump in BG (between 5 - 10 mg/dL) and it drops quickly. But, when I exercise strenuously - I can see my BG rise to 140 mg/dL as the muscles are calling on gluconeogenesis for energy. This happens every time I do chronic running (steady state for 3 miles or more). So, I've changed my exercise to follow Mark Sisson's idea of about 50 - 75% of Max HR on a daily basis. This is about a 4 mph walk for me and I try to get in 5 miles a day (broken up into 1 -2 mile increments - so, I am not sitting at my desk all day). BG rises somewhat but, not to the level with chronic cardio, generally 15 mg/dL.Also, I found that if I do his sprint training (running at max intensity for 30 seconds, and then returning to near baseline HR - repeat 8 times) - my BG also doesn't take much of a hit as he muscles have time to replenish energy stocks by using triglycerides vs having the liver taking over.Play with it - I like the idea of his challenge as I have done something very similar in the past.Good Luck!
I too am amazed at what I am learning. This is nothing like what my doctor
tells me and from what I have learned here, I don't think I every had
diabetes, but rather was predaibetic and put on medication (Metformin) as a
precautionary. My A1C was 5.6 at the time and ranged between 5.2 and 5.9
throughout. I think it is time for a new doctor.
@newbirth35 I got a blood suger in those little acutests my blood suger was
239............but i was drinking coke all day i hope that thats the reason
it was so high. So yeah i gotta see an internist. what pisses me the hell
off is that my blood pressure has always been taken every time ive been to
a doctor and suddenly i go to the doctor monday and they tell me HEY YOU
GOT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND HIGH BLOOD SUGER. Im seriously depressed
We miss the spike of sugar in your blood. They wait one hour to take a
measurement. Apparently is that too long. The sugar was already removed
from the blood stream. It will be better to take a measurement every 20
minutes in the beginning. Is hypoglycaemic a symptom of pre-diabetes?
It Sounds Like Type 1 Diabetes.. People in family have both types 1 and 2!
I have Type 2 which is not good at my age! I would see your doctor just to
make sure!! Let me know what happends!
This is DEFINITELY not DM, let alone type 1 ! In that case your blood sugar
would have shot way up there and and stayed high; also insulin response
would have been sluggish, at least.
Did your Dr. give you the right test? Get the glucose Tolerance Test.
Make sure if you got a glucose tolerance test at your doctor and they only draw blood once and now are telling you that you are not diabetic but you still are ...
I've had blood sugar regulation problems for about 45 years. For 40 of
those years, it went undiagnosed by doctors because of the fasting test. If
I were to be given a fasting test today, I'd still show a normal range of
Also I actually had a bad spell today, one of the worst I have had in a
while, Not really sure what caused it to be honest. I ate yucky taco bueno
and with a water not soda packed full of sugar. but then while I was at the
store about 30 min after eating I almost fainted. Seriously I don't know
why that happened. But I have got it under control most of the time. But
you just have to watch out. Sometimes you never know what your body will
do. What are your symptoms?? Tell me more bout you!
Sorry I am just responding. My symptoms occurred almost every day. Through
out the day I would have times where I just could not concentrate, and felt
like I was going to cry, or got a little shaky at times, or just felt like
I was having a panic attack. Also I would make several mistakes during the
times I did not feel well. It effected my Job performance. I then blacked
out a couple times. When you stress out it just gets worse because your
body produces more epinephrine.
Well basically before I new I had it, I just noticed that certain times
during the day I would get confused, make mistakes at work like getting
numbers backwards, I could not focus, had mood swings, its a long list of
symptoms that why it sounds like you are a hypochondriac . Have you watched
my video about the emotional side effects? Thats says a lot. But
physically, I would notice my fingers shaking. I get woosy and feel like I
might faint. That's when its the worst.
@mepammy Makes sense to me. A test wherein the symptoms of a disease appear
so that it can be diagnosed is certainly to be avoided. After all, if the
symptoms never appear for the doctor, then you don't have the disease, do
you? It's most likely the insurance companies lobbying with the CDC and FDA
not to test, something they've done in the past. It's far less expensive
for you to suffer and die than to treat you for a life-long condition.
I have lost my vision twice which was pretty scary. That does not happen
much at all. I mean literally only twice in about 6 years. I just sat down
and waited for about 15 min or less and it started to come back. So just
incase you have it and that ever happens, don't panic. Just sit down and
close your eyes and focus on breathing. Hope it does not happen, but just
incase and also for anyone else who reads this:)
oh hey, Lack of sleep can seriouly cause some of the same symptoms!!! You
really need your sleep, it could be the whole problem no joke!! Oh and I
forgot to say how often sorry, it is almost everyday I feel a tiny bit like
my sugar is off, I just eat and then I feel fine. Its like I just catch it
before it gets bad. So now it does not get bad but maybe once a month or
less now.
you say get the right test. But you don't say which test. I believe it is
the "glucose tolerance test". Eating lots of smaller meals high in protein
and good fats, and low in carbohydrates (avoid potatoes and starchy
vegetables) is what helps. Avoiding all grains and sugars period.
Great info! 30g's of glucose for the test did me in :(. I got all the
symptoms so the docs usually don't like to do this test because it induces
symptoms. It helped me SO much to know that the hypoglycemia was not just
from going too long without eating...but from eating!
