The backing of carpet is primarily made out of natural fibers i.e. Cotton, Wool, or Jute. Any natural fiber has the tendency to "swell" because it absorbs moisture. Synthetic fibers do not absorb moisture, they are plastic, therefore Synthetic fibers can not "expand" like you have mentioned. I would suggest you take some IICRC classes to help further educate your knowledge on carpet before you start making inaccurate claims.

sometime restretches in hallways require seams to be re cut or doorways and register vents need patched or seamed carpet nowadays are synthetic fibers ie nylon polyester or polyprop but the basics still apply make sure your installers use a powerstretcher
