I have watched both Clannad and Shigatsu. They are different genres yet share many themes. Clannad made me cry at episodes 18 on both seasons, shigatsu made me cry on every second episode. It happened maybe because the anime was very relatable to me, in respect of Kosei's struggles and the music. So, in the crying department, this will get you emotional, possibly more than Clannad. This is a personal opinion, but Clannad felt like a cheap tearjerker after watching this. Sure, clannad after story had it's own emotional roller coaster, but there was a serious lack of any content. I cannot remember the plot from after story other than the last 5-6 episodes. This anime is much more than an emotional one. It explores quite a few themes, and does it in a good way. Even if you don't like music, or don't want tear jerker, this anime will still offer you something. Definitely a must watch. It is a modern classic.
