That thing about Young Adult ISN'T true. Many Adult or General fiction
novels have characters who are teenagers or even younger. What makes young
adult is the theme of the book, so, it will generally be a coming of age
tale told from the perspective of the teenager (if not in first person than
at least focussing on their feelings and hopes, etc.) General fiction tends
to focus less on emotional or growth issues and tells the story more as a
memoir, something OF the past rather than OF the present. Something to be
reflected upon rather than to be all-consuming. Because we have learned
that that one asshole boyfriend you had isn't EVERYTHING EVUH.

Loved this. Such a good way of explaining the different faces of a subgenre
that has really spilled out of its original bounds! Urban fantasy is one of
those subgenres where I really struggle to define it but you always know an
urban fantasy book when you see it! One of my favourites would have to be
the Kim Harrison 'Hollows' series. The characters are just wonderful and I
love the way she combines the serious and the silly to create a fantastic
near-future magical world. Also I think I really need to read Neverwhere!
