Work vs. vacation: from unlimited time to no time off
Some companies, including the Virgin Group and Netflix, now offer "unlimited vacation" jobs where employees could go to work whenever they feel like it, and ...
Mr. Rosner encourages us to get out of the mindset of recession-based
thinking. That is a positive concept. Burnout is real & detrimental to
health. Kudos to Netflix and the like for proving such a novel concept
can be implemented.
But the reality is, a mindset of lack & undeservedness is not just "in our
heads". If we are to make REAL, positive impact on Americans stung by
recession, we have to take a look at ALL types of work places in this
discussion. How can we make respite possible for people not in a
desk-based, corporate job?
Due to economic turndown, many Americans (even those with higher degrees)
now work in the service industry. In retail/foodservice/hospitality, you do
not have the luxury of walking away. Someone has to physically be available
at all times for the potential customer. Some full-time service workers are
lucky enough to have vacation benefits. But what about the vast number of
Americans who now work one or more PART-time jobs because that's all
they can find?. How do you make vacation a reality for these workers?
Companies cut costs by eliminating full-time jobs that offered benefits.
The infographic, "Why Americans are Skipping Vacation" addresses only
those for whom vacation is an OPTION. For the rest of American
workers, they fear being replaced because they ARE easily replaced. Not
being able to afford a vacation isn't a mind-set, it is their reality.
What creative ideas can we come up with so that these workers feel valued
enough to believe they DESERVE time off? How do we translate that to
employers?
I think more creative brainstorming is in order.
