We Review The Dell Vostro 14 V3446 in full detail so that you can make a choice weather to go for it or not and if you just want to wait for buying a new laptop ...
@edishyti1 I've used a Latitude D630 and E6510 now. D630 was silent,
except for heavy CPU load. E6510 (I5 2.5Ghz) has the fan constantly on,
even for basic Office work. Not loud but audible. This 3350 (i3 2310 at
2.1Ghz), with the Dell power profile is silent most of the time. When the
fan comes on briefly is not loud (like E6510) Built quality is very good,
feels solid and well refined. The only area that gets warm is below the
fingerprint reader, where the WiFi and HDD are. I hope this helps
Wireless connection is a very complicated beast in which both the access
point and the wireless card play an important part. So if the wireless
connection is not stable, it can be that either one of the two have
firmware or configuration issues. Not to mention interference or issues
with sharing the medium. So I would make sure you have the latest drivers
installed on both ends then try to change the channel on the access point.
1, 6 and 11 are the only ones everyone should be using. Good luck
@jsmithfreshprince hey, because this screen has a flat/ matte look the
perceived contrast of the image is lower hence the "color reproduction"
reports. If you look at any LCD screen from close distance you will see the
individual pixels. At the normal viewing distance I do not find this screen
to be worse than others that i've used, not the best either. Viewing angles
- keep in mind this is a TN screen, so it performs as one. IPS diplays are
in a different class. I believe that is a good deal!
Hi :) thank you for the video. I'm thinking about buying a laptop but i'm
not sure whether to buy this one , or the vostro 3450 one. got some
question about this one you have :) : 1. I found most components are quite
the same except that the screen size in 3350 is 13 '' and the 3450 is 14-
and still, the price of 3350 is more expensive than the latter..do you know
why is that maybe? is3350 newer ? 2. you probably got the chance to use it
for a while - how r u doing with the keyboard now?
@MajinMan 1. Screen of 3450 is the same resolution which is not too high. I
would prefer 3350 2. I love the keyboard, I have the backlit one. The one
main deterrent for me when I looked to buy the laptop was the fact that
3450 has the HDD field replaceable, not customer replaceable. Meaning that
it is very hard to replace/ upgrade it to an SSd, etc. and you can void
warranty, Aside from that they are pretty much the same thing. 3350 is
about the same price, only a few $s more. Good luck!
@GoldenDurian I wouldn't call it the slimmest out there, but the price
reflects that. It is the normal new laptop height when including the 4 cell
battery, I understand that the 8 cell sticks out to the bottom a bit. I
don't think it can be called heavy, it is very portable that's for sure.
Here is from Dell Dimension: 12.96"/329.2mm Depth: 9.00"/228.5mm Height:
(front/back) 1.07"-1.17"/27.3-29.8mm Starting weight: 4.50lb/2.04kg(4-cell
battery + optical drive)
@realsoccerdude123 Hi again, it was preinstalled on mine. I might have it
together with all recovery and driver CDs that came with it but like I said
I did not use it. The built in speaker is pretty good for what it is. It is
just one and it's pretty loud, good enough for the occasional use. As with
all built in speaker expect it to respond better to the midrange
frequencies. It is firing downward, and it is located on the left side of
the keyboard underneath.
"The installed Seagate Momentus Thin supplies a capacity of 320 GB and
works with fast 7200 revolutions per minute. A feature is the low
construction height of only 7 millimeters. The cage inside the notebook
however also bids the possibility of installing conventional hard disks
with a height of 9 millimeters." - notebookcheck. Can anyone confirm this?
I want to put a intel 520 SSD inside this baby, hope it gets updated for
Ivy Bridge.
@Tuscanic hi there, i like the keypad a lot; it is not flimsy and the keys
provide good feedback. If you have the backlit one it's lovely. Touchpad -
no complains, I usually don't use it but it works well. What I don't like
is the touchpad buttons- the sound is of a cheap toy click, I can't believe
they did't think about it. Being positioned a bit to the left doesn't feel
unnatural when using it, I'm right handed. I hope this helps.
@HH99HH99HH Hi there, I use the internal microphone sometimes for VoIP. If
anything, it would work better than the old one you had. This Vostro has 2
microphones (to the left and right of the camera) so it can do effective
beamforming and noise cancellation. Together with the "Andrea Microphone
Technology" that comes installed you can create profiles and adjust it to
your liking. It works quite well if not very well for what it is.
@TheSpacePenguin Mine is getting warm around the fingerprint reader, from
under the keypad down to the Intel and M$ stickers. But nowhere close to
the touchpad area. Right under the touchpad is the HDD, maybe yours is
running hotter than mine? I have the Seagate Momentus Thin-250Gb. No other
heat issues that I can talk about, I have the i3, HD3000 as well.
@fguihen yes, i have talked to techsupport and they confirmed the 7mm
drive. The drive installed is ST250LT007, the 7mm Seagate Momentus Thin,
you can google it. Intel 320 and X25-M SSDs are 7mm drives with a black,
plastic spacer that can be removed. It has screws in the corners of the
drive, removing it doesn't affect warranty. I hope this helps.
@sighange As you probably know the 3350 has only one speaker located on the
left hand side (tiny opening under the unit, left of the touchpad area).
It is surprisingly loud but I wouldn't call it anything else. It definitely
does the job for occasional use. Otherwise the sound quality is great if
you use a pair of speakers or a headset.
@adijux This one (the Core I3) comes with the 4 cell battery. After a few
charging cycles I would get somewhere between 3-4 hours when using wi-fi,
no BT, browsing and streaming media. I use sleep mode and for that it is
very quick. Shut down probably takes a couple of seconds, but if it bothers
you an ssd would make it almost instant.
@moneymakingkid A quick search reveals that the min for Sims 2 is:
Processor: 800 MHz processor or equivalent RAM: 256mb Video Memory: 32mb
Hard Drive Space: 3.5gb Operating System: Windows 98/2000/ME/XP DirectX
Version: v9.0 So I don't think you'd have a problem running it on this
Vostro, even with the I3 config and 2Gb RAM.
@fguihen Thanks for the feedback. So both 9.5 and 7mm drives fit in the
3350. Now I have to find out if there is a different bracket for the 9.5mm
HDDs. I have asked Dell techsupport and...they told me again that only 7mm
hard drives could fit in the 3350 and that the laptop "is not compatible
with SSDs". Go figure...
@lander77477 This laptop, the 3350-i3 version for Canada, does not come
with the backlit keyboard and does not have the backlit keyboard as an
option. All i5 abd i7 ones have the backlit keyboard as the default option.
If you choose the different configuration you will see that the keyboard
description is different.
thx, if you're fine with the display everything else is smooth and working
well. Keypad it's been holding well also, not much to complain about a year
later. I have replaced the HDD with an SSD not long ago and it is even
better now, very fast to boot or out of hibernation.
@mevnet Thanks for the reply...but pre installed? as far as I know you
don't even have Windows 7 Installed onto your laptop if its packed.you
should've got CDs for windows 7 and Office10. Also I read at places that
the inbuilt speaker sound is very soft and low is this true?
@fguihen well, we both know more about iit, don't we?:) The back plastic
cover has some spacers buit in, wondering if there is the extra 3mm in
there for a 9.5mm HDD. For the metal bracket, maybe you can use longer
screws? Let me know how it goes with the Crucial SSD, thanks
@realsoccerdude123 If you have it it is Fn+F6. You have a couple of
brightness steps to choose from. Once enabled it comes on every time you
touch the keyboard and turns off by itself after a while. I don't know how
you set that timer, if you can. Enjoy your Vostro!
@Tuscanic I'm sorry but this is a loaded question that I cannot answer.
Depending on what you're planning to run on it you can find a lot of
laptops in many configurations. This Vostro 3350 laptop performs very well
for my needs, that I can tell you.
I received my Vostro 3350 a few days ago. I've noticed it gets pretty warm
on the lower right hand side (touchpad area) and less so slightly above
that area. Wondering if you have noticed the same thing or any other heat
issues? (i5 w. Intel HD 3000)
geat review but i just want u to try the microphones on the laptop. i had
an inspiron which js very old but the mic is really nice when i tried and
recorded a short track. may u pls try to record and tell me what u think
about it
@xAcerxAspirex hi there, good point. After a few charge cycles I was able
to get 3-4 hours with a mix of browsing and media streaming. This i3 3350
comes with a 4 cell battery. They have a 8 cell battery as an option as
well.
hi mevnet, I was just wondering. I'm planning to get the 3350 for some
gaming (gta 4, mafia 2, la noire) and mutimedia work (video/movie editing).
specs are core i5 2450m & radeon 6490m. Do you think it could handle the
job?
@m4r71jn In Canada the I3 version does not have the option of backlit
keypad (but you can buy it separately from Dell Parts and install
yourself). As far as I know all other versions come with it by default.
Enjoy!

It's tough to find a review this well done. Thank you for getting to the
key aspects of the notebook and characteristics not readily apparent in the
product description (so many reviews drone on about the minutiae).
Hopefully Dell will refresh the series with Sandybridge, which should
address battery time issues somewhat.
Great review. Why would Dell have a battery that you can't swap out? (Is
this a new fad?) Especially since the battery life is so short, it would be
great to have a second battery to swap in. But you can't. I agree - major
flaw. Of course, I wouldn't mind one for free. :-)
@deryler at first its awesome but i kinda used it while charging so it
shortens the battery life. so yeah the bttry kinda weak. my advice, dont
use it while charging or you'll end up like me; a fully charged battery can
only be used for 2hours tops
I find it interesting that I've gotten easily over 4 hours with the V13
(triple booting Win 7, XP sp3, and Linux) and this new version only puts
out 1-3 hours? *Sigh* I was looking forward to upgrading = \
Man, I would love to have this one. Thanks TechBargains for showing me this
video. Now just keep my fingers across.... :P and save some money (damn how
long it will take me to haven enough $)
please give more attention to the hybrids featuring AMD's APU. It is better
than the intel atom, especially in graphics. It is making its foray into
the "hybrid" market.
Hi Jeff, i just want to know what movie that you tested on the laptop? Look
interesting, i want to see it but i don't know the name :-). Thank you very
much
