Hiking Rock Castle Creek to Austin Homestead near Blue Ridge Parkway
In this video, we take a short hike along the Rock Castle Creek Gorge Trail, located in the Rocky Knob Recreation Area, part of the Blue Ridge Parkway National ...
wow what a beautiful place for a homestead! Can you imagine back in the day
walking through the woods and finding this spot and thinking "yeah I think
I'll take this spot to build my homestead" LOL wow! Thanks for sharing the
area with us!
+Smell N Roses That is exactly what I think about when I hike, what it must have been like for travelers and settlers back in the day when the woods were like they use to be and when they were searching for their homesteads. Just crazy how they were able to do it.
+SouthPaw Bushcraft Those people from back in the day must have been a hearty bunch to make their way through the woods without roads or trails, and with such a great foresight to be able to select homestead sites. I often think about that every time I visit such a preserved site. Glad you enjoyed the video, thank you for watching!
+Jeb & Joe Outdoors Patrick County, Virginia, is a great area...it is essentially the very eastern "edge" of the Blue Ridge Mountains in southern Virginia. It's very close to home for me so I'd like to highlight it more on my channel. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching and commenting!
I noticed there are a lot of good water sources in that park. I really like
that campground. How much is a permit? I did enjoy the shots of the house
and of the barn. Do they give tours of the house?
+Bob808Knight Yes no shortage of water along the gorge section of the trail and that is a perfect camp site. I don't know how much the permits are but I am sure its reasonable. I've often thought about spending a night there but its so close to home (one hour) that I never have. The ridge portion of the trail has no water source. The home is privately owned and best I can tell people actually live there on and off, they don't give tours but I've heard they are happy to talk with interested hikers if you pass by when they are home. Thanks for watching!
