+mozaikgem There are better ways to attack BB's in most areas. Salt is a cheaper and more abundant solution, but hunting, pesticides, and heating, and even DE before using this method if you can afford or have available. This is a budget solution. If I had a Persian rug worth a lot of money I'd probably be shy to use much salt for any length of time, but for a normal bug infestation with regular carpets I would not hesitate to leave the salt in the carpet for months. I do not have BB's but still sweep salt under my furniture and under my mattress between mattress and boxspring, etc. I have had salt on my mattress and boxspring for years with no noticeable damage.Salt absorbs moisture and should be replaced, but not too often.
OH, I FORGOT. WE BOUGHT A SPECIAL MATTRASS VACUUMCLEANER WITH A UV LIGHT
IN IT, SO EVERY TIME CLEAN SHEETS ETC. ON THE BED, THE VACUUMCLEANER GOES
OVER IT.IS THAT ALSO ANY HELP???LOUISA
+Louise VAN DER MAREL UV light will never kill insects as it does germs/bacteria. They like to hide away from the mattress also so vacuuming just the mattress is futile.Hunting , heating and exterminating are all better than using salt, but some cannot afford or do not have access to the equipment and services. You should still hunt for them.. If you see one.. follow it. They often live up to 20 feet from the bed and like dark places.Trying to find them is the number one way of getting them. There is a heat guide in the video comment that gives ideas on heat required to kill them. If I lived in tropics I might try to heat them out.I'd also advise mattress bags from a major moving company. They help save mattresses.gl
LIVING IN THE TROPICS AND HAVING A BOX SPRING, SOMETIMES I SEE THS SIZE OF
A PINPRICK WALKING, YUCK, CAN I THROW SALT AND/OR BAKING SODA BETWEEN
THAT?? DOESN'T RUIN MY MATRASS?? OR ON TILES??? HAVING EVERY NIGHT THE
AIRCON ON 23 DEGREES.LOUISA
+Louise VAN DER MAREL I use salt between my box spring and mattress all the time. Borax is the most common salt pesticide. I would not put salt on a carpet worth thousands of dollars, but would not hesitate to put salt on my mattress under sheets or between mattress and box spring.I use salt even though I am bed bug free as a preventative and to stop other insects that might get in such as spiders.People regularly use salt and borax to get rid of fleas in carpets etc. I do not think will salt or corode anything too badly, but I'd still avoid salting anything very valuable. You mention air conditioning so I will say that bedbugs require a lot of humidity to grow. Using your ac as a dehumidifier might be better, but idk.. any type of dehumidifier or heater should lower the dampness of a room.good luck
i've been searching for a very simple and effective solution because i
believe i have bed bugs in my room. Been bitten many times while laying
down. That's the first experience in my entire life. Never a good feeling!
Thanks for this. Does any kind of salt will work for this? iodized salt for
example.
+vierzehn phat Borax is the most popular salt for pesticide, but in a pinch any salt will work. There are better but more expensive solutions such as Heating, hunting, and extermination. Other tips here are the heating guide in comments. Mattress bags can be bought cheap from moving companies.Yes.. Normal tab;e salt will work. It is not instant as with heat and pesticides but will work over time and you should still try to find where they are hiding if possible
+Carmen Davila You can add salt to water or just on its own. Baking soda is aerated salt and will also work. Some have suggested "blending" the salt so it becomes more "powdery". Not necessary.Just a few packages of table salt sprinkled under mattresses, sheets and bedroom furniture. For a spray Mr Clean kills them on contact as would lemon juice and alcohol mix. Salt water would hurt them, but maybe not kill as quickly as those others.
The thing to remember about this approach as well as with using
diatomaceous earth, which is very effective AND VERY SAFE, is that the
effect won't be immediate. It will take several weeks. Gradually you will
realize you're being bitten less and less and eventually one day you will
realize it's been 2 or 3 weeks since you were last bitten. Be prepared
though, if you live in interconnected housing (apartment conplex, duplex,
condo, townhouse), to have to do this battle off and on for the rest of the
time you live there. I live in a condo and have been battling them off and
on for 5 years now. I win the battle (with DE and rubbing alcohol and
making my bed an island with traps under the legs) and I am bite free for 2
or 3 years because they run to someone else's place. Then that someone else
gets their place treated and they run back to mine or maybe someone else's
place and I have to start the battle all over again. As long as you have
interconnected houses, you will never be rid of them completely or
permanently. The good news is each time you have to start this battle, you
know exactly what to do and it it is not the big, traumatic deal it was the
first time you realized you had BBs.
+CtsLife It's a very high-end, expensive condo. Everyone owns their own unit. And there is no way in hell we are ever going to admit to each other that we have bedbugs. There's no way I'll be the first! You do that and you open a huge can of worms that are much more problematic than the bedbugs. No, I've gotten this down, I"ll just deal with them every few years.
+Michelle Rizzo I think you should contact the owner of this building (if you're renting) or get together with your neighbours and solve this problem once and for all. Come up with a game plan and hire a professional!
+Michelle Rizzo I have vaseline on my wall beside the bed (not noticeable), and my metal bedframe and bed legs are also coated in vaseline. It would make their journey less pleasant if they can move through it at all. With mattress bags and Michelles previous tip of making sure your bedding does not provide a ladder you should make their lives a lot more complicated. The traps Michelle recommends I am guessing are vaseline filled bowls that the bed legs sit in? unsure if that is her style of trap, but I have seen bowls of vaseline under bed legs in the past.
+csifwtt I don't blame you -- getting them from used furniture and bedding and pillows and the like is a common source. For that reason alone I would never buy used furniture nor step foot in any sort of flea market or consignment shop, etc. But then I hate those places anyway. Use diatomaceous earth and natural spray with pine oil and they will eventually go away. It's also important that you make your bed an island, not touching the wall with no covers ever touching floor and traps under each leg. It takes time and persistence but eventually they will go away. If you have a pedestal bed, though, you're screwed.
+csifwtt If you have access to a heat machine... I have the heat requirements in my video description. Like a turkey or roast however you must let the heat penetrate objects that may hide them such as a drawer full of socks...based on Michelle Rizzo suggestions Id also use up all the Diatomaceous Earth you bought. I have little experience with DE.I believe in overkill so I would use both methods or more (always hunt). I'm gifted at locating the buggers.. maybe my brain is too small and i think like em...gl
+Michelle Rizzo To be honest, I could KILL my next door neighbor and her mother. They are both notorious for hunting up bargains at thrift stores and other businesses in that realm and don't bother to take the time to check the items when they get home. The daughter informed me a few weeks ago that she had bed bugs (at least she was nice enough to tell me). The apartment building I live in has dealt with this problem more than once, so they invested in one of those LARGE "computerized" heat machines, but the bugs are still there and are making themselves welcomed in my apt., but I have an arsenal of stuff to fight back.
