hey, did you lift the vehicle to change these? or can it be done without lifting?

+American Guy thanks a lot dude

+Ordon Cumberbatch Yes, I did lift the pickup but look at the tire height above the ground in the video-that is where you want to put it. If you lift the vehicle so that you can stand up to work on it and then pull the bolts, you will then have one side of the axle falling to the shock travel limits, and could tear your brake line and differential vent line. If you don't lift it, and then pull the bolts, the vehicle will fall on your axle and cause lots of damage. You could lift the vehicle up to standing height and then put a chain or ratcheting strap from the frame to the axle while you pull the bolts, but I would be extremely careful when doing so as the axle with tires on it is very heavy. I feel safer putting the tire an inch or so above the ground when doing this job. Also, you need to lift from the frame, not somewhere on the springs or under the axle since you are about to disconnect it from the vehicle. Be careful out there.

Good helpful video. I could see your kid videoing in the chrome bumper. Saw he had his earmuffs on. Good call. A lot of times we just go at the work and not think about. The hazards till too late. Teach 'em safety while they're young and they do retain the lesson. I used your air hammer idea and it helped immensely Thanks a bunch.

+Bettin Huge Good eye seeing that in the reflection. :) I agree completely with regard to the safety especially since it is tough to find good help-gotta take care of them! Glad the video helped.

Excellent video! Thanks. I have basically the same shop setup at home as you. How long did the job take from start to finish? I have an 05 excursion diesel, same setup. Thanks again

+Kyle Boyd Hi Kyle, I am glad the video helped. To do the part you saw (front leaf spring bushing and shackle bushing) was about an hour from removing bolts to torquing the bolts back down (does not include time putting vehicle on lift). Using this method removing the old bushings is pretty slick and takes little time. Often times the most difficult and time consuming part is aligning the holes to put the bolts back through. Plan on using various tools like a big punch, prybars, or even a come-along to move the axle forward or rearward. Also, the bushing diameter on these front leaf springs is 2 inches. Other vehicles have smaller diameter bushings which require the use of smaller drill bits (they break) and makes it tougher to get air hammer attachments in there so they can be very difficult. However, like in a lot of cases, persistence will always over come the obstacle, so keep at it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you use a torch on the leaf, won't it weaken the metal? Currently trying to get the bushings out of my 2000 Durango. WHAT A PAIN. I did the right rear about 3 years ago, and everything came apart REAL easy. The leaf is still in the vehicle and I don't want to smoke anything. Any other ideas besides a torch? G.K.

+SparkysGarage Thanx for the reply. After (2) COUNT'EM TWO FKN DAYS, I have completed SAID operation. WOULD I DO THIS AGAIN WITHOUT THE PROPER TOOLS??!! no, would rather do an engine swap. Thank you for your support, GK

+Gary Kovach Torch was the only option I could get to work. It was just a propane torch, not map gas, So I don't feel it would do any substantial weakening to the spring.

@SparkysGarage I use the melt out method like you did on those rubber bushings on my explorer and can not find replacements bushings for them where did you get yours? Right now I have just the bolt and sleeve that came with my shackles and it makes a clunking noise every time I hit a bump or turn right cause there is a bit of play between the sleeve and leaf spring.

I got under it this weekend and got a measurement on it and got some that fit at a local auto parts store not too bad 5 bucks a piece and it took care of it.  thanks for the info, I heard rockauto was a good place for parts I need to check them out.

Nice video. Great idea with the bushing. When you talk about recip saw to remove the bracket. Are you talking about cutting the whole bracket including the bolts or just cutting each nut off?

I've learnt something to day. I've done this many ways ,(normally push, shove, grunt) & thought the bush eyelet was complete not split. what a great way to do this job. Another way to fit shock lower split pin is to use a socket with two slot cut in it. aline slots with hole apply G clamp over socket & inside of spring tighten untill split pin can be fitted. cheers Bobblehat

I have the rear bushes to do soon, will try the same technique and see how it goes this time. Glad the video was useful.I saw the socket method on the Series group on Facebook, nice idea. I may as well turn one from scrap steel and save damaging any sockets. Cheers

Hey Man, I'm pretty sure those U-bolts are suppose to wrap around the axle. It looks to me like the U-bolts wrapped around the leaf spring my be part of what caused the problem in the first place. Just FYI, Love your vids man!
