Carl Grenfell only on the post facelift models. i had 2 pre facelift ones like the one in the video and not a speck of rust on them at 10 years old in the UK. unlike the later w203 c class!
louis smeets What "official" reports? (Not that such a thing exists...) J D Powers? What kind of problems did your mom have with the 500? I know the "Dualogic" gearbox in those is a bunch of misery and the door handles aren't all to tough...
Candisa Well, official Reliability reports show different. Though Mercedes might not be best, it's still far above Fiat. My mom owned a Fiat 500 and my grandma an A190. The Fiat was ofcourse a lot newer but had more problems than the Mercedes, I think it's a big bag of luck if you don't get problems with any car, but Fiat reliable? Nahh
louis smeets Well, everybody I know who actually owns or owned a Fiat can't say anything wrong about them...About ride quality: My parents have a B180, it really isn't comfortable yet it doesn't handle remotely sporty either, the interior is a plastic fest, fuel consumption is ridiculous yet it is not exactly a fast car, and not once it managed to go without repairs between oil changes.I'd prefer a Bravo over that! The sort of car I bought would be a rebadged Renault if I went Mercedes, only about €4000,- more expensive than the actual Renault and an even uglier dashboard...Totally agreed a japanese car would be the safest bet, but they simply don't have the type of car I was looking for.
Candisa Reliability of German cars has become more of a myth than a fact over year, I agree with you on that. But I don't think it's because their cars became worse, other bacame better. Today brands like Toyota (Lexus) and Honda are more reliable than Mercedes, but interior quality and ride quality? Mercedes is still better without a doubt. So if you want an extremely reliable car than buy a Toyota I'd say, definitly not a Fiat...
juaneer Very simple, 20+ years ago, Mercedes was quality, reliable, went a million miles with no big costs... Nowadays, Mercedes is cheaply made and break down more than some cheaper brands, but they still cost their weight in gold.I'm not telling anything new, so either you're a blind fanboy, or I really have no clue what the problem with me telling what is well known is.
Candisa Why do you speak so badly of Mercedes? I'll tell you right now that me, and many others, would rather be driving the A 180 than any Fiat 500, unless it's the Abarth, but in that case I'd just take the A45 AMG.
juaneer So if the reliability of a certain brand that used to be great went down to a point it is almost certainly no better than a Fiat, and the Fiat is cheaper in purchase, parts, and regular maintenance, it doesn't make sense to buy the Fiat?Maybe you're right... I should have bought a Dacia, would even be great value if it falls apart after 5 years!
Candisa So you dislike Mercedes becuase they're junk, you dislike german cars in general, you're starting to dislike Volvo because they're (according to you) becoming less reliable, and then you buy a Fiat because you have faith in them?
louis smeets This will be my first Fiat, never dared to buy a used Italian car, but since I'm going brand new and I already go to a Fiat garage with my Volvo, I took the risk. Reliability of Volvo isn't what it used to be anyways...
Candisa Well I'd much rather buy an unreliable 2002 ML320 than a fucking Lada Niva, shit just looks terrible, I think you are hating on Mercedes and German cars in general based on the fact that you can't afford one
louis smeets So did the last Lada's that were offered in the west...And that quality feel of Mercedes is long gone, as is their reliability and durability. All you get for your money with Mercedes nowadays is a badge and confidence, confidence based on older Merc's quality and very very soon will be shamed. My parents bought a Merc when they retired, like Clarkson says in the video, trusting they wouldn't have to bother with break downs and negotiating for a car anymore... Well, it's junk, no other way of putting it, they will buy an other car soon and it certainly won't be anything german...
Candisa I'm pretty sure all mercedes cars come with central locking and electric windows in the front. It's mostly the quality of the interior and general feel while driving (steering, pedals, handling) which makes these cars more expensive.
juaneer The last Lada's sold in EU already came with electric windows and central locking. You can still buy a Mercedes today with no climate control and window winders in the back, so yeah, I stand by my statement, Mercedes's are still expensive, still as basic as a Lada, but nowadays you get nothing but badge-image in return for your money, pretty much like those upsold Skoda's with 4 rings in the grille...
Remember this was 1993, those were optional extras on most cars back then. I used to have a 1992 Volvo 940, a Volvo, the safety brand... Guess what? It didn't have ABS or airbags, and it had manual windows as well, although it was meant to compete with the E class...Mercedes used to be over engineered with a price tag that supported that. Nowadays Mercedes's are just as unreliable and expensive to run as VW's, while still being as basic as a Lada and well overpriced.
