Yes, they do come to oranges. Give the feeder some time. Put out jelly
(grape), oranges and nectar. It may be a little late in the season this
year but I wouldn't give up until mid September. Then try again starting on
tax day (4-15) next year. They need to find the feeder first... then they
will feed from memory and bring friends. We started about 7-8 years ago
with just and orange. We had 1 pair the first year. Now we have so many we
can't count them all. Be patient and consistant!
Nice video. I was hoping to get video like this too but the feeder I bought
is like a bird house with a roof over it and a stainless steel cup
underneath to hold the grape jelly. I've yet to get the Baltimore Orioles
to show any interest in it. I also tried a nectar feeder that is orange but
no luck too. Have you seen them east the oranges? I tried that too. They
are eating my grapes and figs though. Thanks for the video.

There are 4 food that you can use. They absolutely love grape jelly which
is what you see them eating in the video. But, we attracted our first pair
by cutting an orange in half and putting it in a suet cage. They also drink
nectar like hummingbirds and finally they eat insects, so offering
mealworms is another great way to feed them. To get started I would put out
oranges, jelly and nectar in brightly colored feeders starting early to mid
April in the south and the first of May in the north.
Thank You - what awesome, crystal clear footage of the birds! Towards the
end of the video, I made an interesting observation that had me thinking.
Right at about the 2:54 mark there is an oriole (female?) that flies off
with a big glob of jelly in its mouth. Do you suppose it could be taking it
back to the nest to feed their young? I noticed the others mostly ate the
jelly on the spot before taking off.
Blu, sorry it took a while to reply, haven't logged in for a while. They
will feed the young insects. You can offer mealworms which they love! But
they wont take the jelly back to the nest.
Best time to feed orioles is May in the north (NY), earlier south. They
also like navel oranges. Beware. My girlfriend left out grape jelly for the
orioles and found a dead hummingbird in it. He got stuck in the jelly and
couldn't get free. He smothered.
every year i grow giant zenias and i always see orioles and several species
of butterflys including monarchs in them i just saw them today august
