What an interesting video! It raises some questions for me. for a start, has the 'Pierce' on the fire truck got anything to do with the old Pierce-Arrow company? The reason why I ask is that sometimes old names survive into specialist vehicles. The old British Alvis name survived into the 2000s on military vehicles, despite the last cars being made in the mid sixties. Also, is the bell on the truck (functional I'm sure) a sort of carry over based on tradition rather than need? Old fifties and early sixties British films involving police chases usually featured at least one Wolseley police car with a front bumper mounted 'Winkworth' bell, now a must-have on any restored police car of the period. However, once the more modern siren superseded it, the bell was gone on subsequent police cars. As for the chevrons on the rear of the truck for visibility, we have the same rules requiring large/long vehicles display such markings, though in reality, anyone not able to see something this size to avoid running into the back of it, has got a problem! Finally I am intrigued by the piper. I was wondering why an instrument that I normally associate with Scotland, plays an important ceremonial role in Florida, USA. Actually I've just had to look the answer up using the online encyclopedia, and found that the bagpipes became a ceremonial instrument with various armies around the world (probably partly as a consequence of the Commonwealth) and it seems various police and fire services around the world have adopted the bag pipes as part of their tradition. Me? I bought Mull of Kintyre by Paul McCartney and Wings in 1977. That's the only connection I've got!

Hey, Mick!  Yes, I think there is a link.  Pierce Arrow evidently sold its engine manufacturing equipment to Seagrave, who used the V-12 in their fire trucks. So Pierce was out of business in 1938, but the name may have carried over because the engines outlasted the company.  The bell I figure is ceremonial only...perhaps it has some use at a fire for communicating with firefighters...just speculation.  Bagpipes are big here...almost all police and firefighter ceremonies involve bagpipes.  This piper was from Canada, so he came by the bagpipe honestly!  Thanks!  :) Jack

What a wonderful celebration! Fire fighters have one of the toughest jobs out there! Nice to know that they have state of the art equipment at their disposal! Most fire fighters work full time, and I imagine the fire house becomes a second home. Where I live, we are soo small and rural.. We depend on the volunteer fire department. Most of our fire fighters work regular jobs.. but when the call goes out.. It's amazing how fast they are able to get there! Our fire fighters are not necessarily paid.. but may use the time spent on fighting fires to put toward paying for city utilities. The largest job they have is in the summer months, when temperatures soar to over 100°.. drying out vegetation, and the threat of wild fires is huge!! Thanks Jack! A great tribute to the city of Eustis! Great they are close by! :D

Hey, Karyn!  This, together with teaching and nursing, are probably the most under appreciated jobs out there.  I don't think most stop to think about the hazards that firefighters face, particularly when they fight fires at industrial sites, and exposure to toxic materials is very possible.  It's great that we have volunteer firefighters too, and they deserve extra credit because they're doing the job without benefit of pay, and exposed to the same risks as other firefighters.  Wildfires are so unpredictable, and the danger of entrapment is always present...witness the recent tragedy of the Yarnell Hill fire in Arizona, killing 19 firefighters! Thanks!  :) Jack

The closest fire station is 2 miles from where I live.

+Jason Carpp Hey, Jason!  That's good...one of the benefits of a place that's not too crowded, yet has good services.  Thanks!  :) Jack

+Jack R That can certainly be a problem. Fortunately, Gig Harbor, Washington isn't a very busy town. There are several fire stations in and around town, which helps. :)

Hey, Jason!  That's probably an ideal arrangement.  Part of the problem is how much the municipalities have spread out...it's expensive to construct stations and buy equipment and staff each of those stations.  However, if there's a lot of traffic and congested highways, 4 miles of rural roads may be the equivalent of 2 miles of city traffic.  Thanks!  :) Jack

Hey Jack. Sweet looking firetruck. Is this the newest firetruck dedicated by the city of Eustis? What's this about? :)
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jack R I agree. She was a wonderful grandmother. :)

+Jason Carpp Hey, Jason!  Sorry to hear of her passing.  You have the knowledge that you did everything you could for her.  Thanks!  :) Jack
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jack R Thanks. She lived for a few more weeks, before passing on. At least she lived to be 93 yrs old. Yesterday would've been her 95th birthday.

+Jason Carpp Hey, Jason!  Sorry to hear of your grandmother's stroke...calling 911 got help to her immediately instead of waiting until she could be seen in the emergency room.  Did she survive?  Thanks!  :)  Jack

+Jack R When my grandmother suffered a stroke, I called 911, and an ambulance came and took her to a hospital. :)

+Jason Carpp Hey, Jason!  Very true.  And you'd be surprised at the number who hesitate to call the paramedics...sometimes with disastrous results!  Thanks!  :)  Jack

+Jack R I agree. What town and city doesn't have elderly who needs fast treatment in emergency, or the disabled? :)
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-nUG1rUnALcM/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAASE/6zsoO51Jwis/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jason Carpp Hey, Jason!  We have a lot of "elderly" here, and they're particularly concerned with prompt treatment in a medical emergency.  I'm sure many a life has been saved with prompt care.  Thanks!  :) Jack

+Jack R Ah! Ok. It is indeed a considerable investment. I hope it turns out to be worth the investment. :)

Hey, Jason!  This is the newest firetruck for the department.  That high cost explains why departments and municipalities have to really budget for new equipment.  It was all about the dedication of the new truck, called "housing" and the dedication of the new fire station.  It's a considerable investment in the safety of the community!  Thanks!  :) Jack
