What are some good Gnome 2 DE's? I love how Gnome 2 works (I'm a new-ish
Linux user and I've gone through a lot of the newer DE's, but I know what
I'm doing) and I would like to use it some more. ATM I'm using Elementary
OS without the Wingpanel and Plank, instead I'm using the Gnome Panel, and
it is way better. :) BTW I would like an up-to-date DE, not an old, shut
down one please. :)
I totally agree with him! It´s possible to get these features working but
it bothers me that i have to tweak my system for hours so i can finally use
it.All points are right and you should mention that the "default
applications" is also crappy in Gnome 3........why can´t i just choose the
path to the application in Nautilus.........
In 10 easy clicks in Fedora/Gnome 3 you could open a terminal and then: su
-c "shutdown -h now" ...to power down completely. That's a joke about the
10 clicks and all. I haven't used Gnome 3. I'm in love with 2.32 and I
won't use any other environment if my distro gives me a choice to use Gnome
2.32.
You, sir, look like a person who tested GNOME3 for 15 minutes and said
"F*ck it, Gnome2 is better anyway". You should at least google the problems
bothering You in G3. Because for EVERY little problem You listed there is a
very simple solution. Good luck! I hope You give G3 a try ;)
What used to be better in GNOME 2? Everything. I am using Gnome exactly as
you do (except for your paranoid attitude towards suspension), and for
productivity reasons I find this the best option. What is at all the point
of those "improvements" in Gnome 3?
gnome3 supports icons on desktop... also there are extensions for a classic
startmenu.... shutting down is also possible, simply hit the alt key... its
oddly hidden, but its there...
How can I install Gnome 3.18 in Ubuntu 15.10 with all its apps. I have
already installed 3.18 but I didn't get the calendar app. I tried
installing gnome-calendar. Now I have a Calendar icon but it wont open. How
can I get the calendar app? Thank you.
+TutoElectro If you check on staging PPA:https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/ubuntu/gnome3-staging?field.series_filter=wilyYou'll see there is no Calendar App. So the plan is to include all the apps (if possible), but it depends on their time. That's why I said there are 3 more weeks for final release. They will prolly add more items on their PPAs.If you installed Calendar 3.16 from Ubuntu 15.10 official PPAs, and if and when GNOME 3 Team PPAs add Calendar 318, then yes. It will just automatically upgrade.
+alex diavatis Thank you but I already have installed the 15.10 beta. I just wanted to know if when I updated Gnome to 3.18 from 3.16 it came with Calendar. If it doesn't, once they release it it will be installing when updating gnome regularly?
+TutoElectro All Gnome Apps should be included at some point. It is matter of priorities & time that GNOME3 Team has. But 15.10 release is on 3 weeks from now!
Running Debian w/ Gnome 3 for a few weeks. Horrible WM (compared to many
others), but the extensions make it a lot better (meaning, make it
look/work more like the wonderful Gnome 2).
The Debian 8 installer gives you the options to install the Mate
desktop...one could install the Cinnamon desktop, XFCE, Gnome 3 and Gnome
traditional, I left Ubuntu as soon as Gnome 3 came along, went to Linux
Mint, and now I am back to Debian 8 with the Mate desktop. I am pleased
with it....But I will not stoop as low as thinking less of those who do not
agree with my take. Thanks!
+stockingandblossom1 ok , as far as software center: go to Applications- system tools -Add/Remove Software voila you can search for software and install it. So since you mentioned VLC, I searched for it and "The bloody thing didnt find it!" so you open synaptic package manager, search for vlc...aha there it is! mark for installation, apply and done.Update manager: open synaptic package manager, left top, click "reload" let her rip. Then click "mark all upgrades" let synaptic do its thing ...done.Look don't feel bad or say that's too complicated, when you buy a new car you need to learn how the light switch works and which side has the gas cap. Its just that some distros have done a lot of work providing you with scripts for "software updates" and "software center" and other "one click solutions", well great. But you are on the right track, ask questions and then comes enlightenment, Hope this helps!
+tostodayI would appreciate if you would make a video review of it. These are the tweaks I made to the desktop.Better Volume Indicator, Dash To Dock, Hide Top Bar, Native Window Placement, Open Weather, Alternate Tab, Straight Top Bar, Transparent Top Bar. On the 'dash to dock' I made it semi transparent, and put the launcher on top.
+AngeliaDawn I did take a look at Tanglu last year. Cool name- I thought of Kung Fu :)
