To Sam Harris (& all new vegans): Vegan Nutrition Basics
Sam Harris recently announced on his Waking Up podcast that he is considering going vegan and would like some help with regard to vegan nutrition. So Sam ...
This girl calls herself a vegan?? "Although they aren't technically vegan,
bivalves and oysters are ok." Wtf. She also believes that research about
poultry and dairy and everything non vegan being crucial, just, you know, a
vegan version of the stupidest thing in the world. How does she trust their
knowledge when they recommend animal products? If you want a REAL vegan
youtuber, go to the vegan corner or Freelee the banana girl.
Is Harris currently a vegetarian? If not, it seems like a fools errand to
go straight from meat eater to vegan. Or maybe I just have
lower-than-average willpower. *shrugs shoulders*
I was vegetarian for a year before I went vegan. Still the transition was quite tough. When I was vegetarian I was basically eating a cheese and pasta diet.
Thank you for this thoughtful, non-dogma-driven video.
I would suggest that people be careful when buying the "faux meats." Some,
like Morningstar Farms, while delicious, contain enough chemicals to fuel a
nuclear power plant. (But if you're a vegan, you're probably a label-reader
as well.)
+Glorified Truth Lots of Morningstar products also contain eggs and milk, so not vegan. But the ribs are vegan, and delicious!I'm surprised an RD would put faux meats in the legumes category. Whole beans, lentils, peas, as well as tempeh, tofu, and soymilk, are usually healthier than the faux meats. I consider faux meats convenience foods, but shouldn't be counted towards nutritional goals- though the calories count, of course.
What are your thoughts on honey? I have been eating vegan for about 5
weeks. It has been going well (gave up sugar & white flour at the same
time) though still looking for a decent cheese substitute.
+jmomm A really good channel to check out is Bite Size Vegan as well. Her videos are very informative as well and she covers all topics including honey. I found, for myself, cutting out dairy and not having it for about a month helped wean me off the opiate effects of dairy. For fattiness I love avocado and nutritional yeast(it has a cheesy flavour and contains B12). You can also make your own cheese from cashews and other things. Chao is very good as well. I like the Daiya cream cheese brand the best for cream cheese. Tofutti is good too. I'm in Canada and we are getting more options now which is great. There is a really supportive group on facebook called Trying Vegan. You can ask questions and share food :) Congrats on eating vegan. I have been vegan for over one year and have cut out all forms of animal exploitation beyond just food. Good luck. Sounds like you are off to a great start.
+jmomm She has made a video about honey already :)
