@LCDStreetPhotographer, i really wanna be a marine biologist but I don't
just wanna sit in a lab all day doing paperwork. I do want to take notes
and stuff and study the marine life but I also wanna be outside on a boat
in the ocean actually observing real marine life and really learning what
it's like. More importantly, I want to be somewhere by the ocean where I
can just go outside and see marine life and study it and marine life and
then take notes and you know how some biologists set up the
The next thing to consider would be what you'd like to do after your
studies at Undergraduate level. I will say that, if like me you wish to
move into research then you will almost certainly want to complete a
Masters and then progress to PhD / Post-Doc level study (keep in mind any
PhD / Post-doc position will be research focussed anyway so you'll be
halfway there by this stage). However your still very young and have plenty
of time to decide, I know you'll make the right decision. Good luck.
@TakayakiGal Then you really should aim high and go for the gold standard,
a career in Marine Biology. I am not sure how old you are, but if you are
ovr 25 do not let this put you off. I served in the British Royal Marine
Commando's up until the age of 29, when i left i finished my A levels,
attended the University of Southampton and took my BSc (Hons) Marine
Biology and Oceonography degree. I currently work for U.A.R, currently
studying Hapalochlaena maculosa, the Blue Ringed Octopus.
You're in the US I see, you have some good options. I would look at Cornell
University - Biology Degree with a specialization in Marine Biology,
Harvard University - Degree in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology with a
Marine Biology & Biological Oceanography track, Duke University - B.S. in
Biology with a concentration in Marine Biology and University of California
Santa Barbara - offers field studies in the Pacific with a B.S. in Aquatic
Biology. All good choices in my opinion.
As another option, you may even like to consider a broad based Biology
degree perhaps BSc (Hons) Biology / Biological Sciences as this will give
you a good broad based degree and should allow you to ascertain which
particular Biological specialism interests you most, and then specialise in
it in years 2 and 3 of your degree. You may find you have a passion for
Microbiology over Marine Biology or perhaps biochemistry, ecology or maybe
genetics.
Thank you soooo much for all your advise it has really helped me a lot. I
have weighed the pro's and con's and I really think I would enjoy Marine
Biology,I just need to do a bit more research on it and I will go for some
work exposure. I need to make a decision soon because I will be applying
for university very soon. What I would really like to know though is, how
much of on-site exposure do you get as a marine biologist?
Yes that would be a really good idea however I do have some sort of
direction and I would choose Marine Biology over many things, mainly because
it has to do with the ocean and I have a deep passion for swimming and the
unbelievable underwater world :) I hope my point of view is not too
idealistic,I really want to find a career that I will enjoy
It's certainly a dilemma, ultimately you need to sit down and list the pros
and cons of each. However go with gut instinct, regarding which career you
aspire to, and I don't think you'll go too far wrong. Marine Biology,
Zoology and even Mechanical Engineering would certainly all be rewarding
careers.
I'm still not really sure...i'm in grade 11 and seriously confused. I was
thinking about doing a general BSC, majoring in marine biology and zoology
but i'm not sure anymore since i'm also thinking about Mech Eng. AARRGGHH
Do all marine biologist teach classes in the winter? I've looked on several
websites and they all say that in the winter marine biologist stop research
and give lectures/ answer questions at universities.
