Dual Harddrive laptop: Add an SSD into an HP DV6 6190us.flv
How to install an SSD Hard drive in an HP Pavilion dv6 6190US and move the included hard drive into the space normally used by the optical drive. This gives a ...
Hello there. I have quite similar laptop, with i7 sandy bridge. I would
like to ask about SATA III. I've checked Jeyi caddies and found out that
they are compatible with SATA III. Can you confirm, whether the laptop has
SATA III port in DVD rom bay? As far as I know, only main HDD bay is
supported with SATA III, while DVD rom is using SATA II only. I would
really need reply as if it does not support SATA III, I would buy cheaper
caddy, which does not support SATA III. Thank you in advance!
Its in the OS and applications that you see a significant improvement in
performance. Regardless of OS the machine will boot faster, resume faster,
load applications (that are stored on the SSD) faster, respond to commands
faster. Anything that requires accessing the hard drive just goes faster.
New machines have SATA III 6 GBS (theoretical) bandwidth and platter
drivers can't really use all of SATA I 1.5GBS. Also slightly lighter, use
much less power & have no moving parts.
Since optical drives are (to my knowledge) standard in shape the caddy's
are as well. Brand shouldn't be an issue. The two key issues are. 1.
connection type. Take out your optical drive and visually verify what shape
the plug is. 2. Caddy height. A 12.7mm caddy can hold either a 9.5 or a
12.5mm hdd. Get the caddy that fits, even if your using a smaller drive.

I am so glad that you made the video. its really useful. but how can still
use the default window (HP) on the new SSD (is it possible to move all data
from HDD (original) to SSD( 2nd hard drive) I have the recovery disc. can I
install the disc to get the original window back, or I have to buy a new
window 7 to install on new SSD? my word may not be clear.hope you can
understand and help me. sorry about that. Thanks
Thank you! This worked great for me, I replaced the optical drive of my dv6
with a secondary SSD. Bought the caddy from ebay. The only challenge I had
was getting the faceplate off the optical drive; I wound up disengaging the
opposite tab first, as it was the only one that was readily apparent. After
that everything was very simple. Thanks for your excellent walkthrough!
@chibling, clarification. The DV6 only has one harddrive bay. To put in a
second hdd you have to remove the optical drive. The dv7 line has 2
harddrive bays, but the only one I've looked in had only 1 hdd cable and
the user would have had to buy a 2nd proprietary cable from HP to connect
the 2nd drive.
No, at least not on this model. Some (perhaps all) HP DV7 models actually
have a dedicated space for a 2nd hard drive. In this case I had to remove
the optical drive and replace it with a optical drive shaped hard drive
caddy to hold the hard drive.
I own a HP Pavilion DV6 6053ea. I want to keep the optical drive. Can I
just replace the existing HD with a SSD ? I have an external hard disk if
needed. Will it boot up on a Windows 8 DVD and take it from there?
Thanks for the guide, I tried taking off the bezel on my optical drive but
nearly broke it so I decided not to try and take it off, it doesn't look
quite as nice but at least i got more storage space.
Once you take out the optical drive is there any way to use it as an
external optical drive or is it just cheaper to buy a new external optical
drive? Thanks this tutorial really helped :D
Hi. I also have an dv6 and looking into doing this. I just wanted to ask
about how you deal with the heat that the hdd makes? Have that been any
problem for you at all? Great video btw
A search on Ebay for "SATA 2nd hdd caddy optical drive" will show a number
of options. This particular model of HP can take the taller 12.7mm caddies.
Make sure it's a SATA to SATA.
I was kinda if-y about doing this but now that I saw you do this with a
laptop very similar to mine I am confidant to do this! Thanks! I am liking
an subbing!
guys, i am using HP dv6-2120tx i just bought a ADATA SSD but my bios and
window7 cannot detect it i tried upgrading Bios but couldnt help. any
thoughts?
I've got a HP dv6-6141. Do you know if it's a 12,7mm dvd drive? And also if
it's sata connector. I guess the connector on the hdd is sata and not pata.

This is great I've been stuck for like 6 months on how to upgrade the
original slot there's nothing big enough or it's too expensive. Please send
me a link for the exact caddy in video. Also any recommendation on drive to
use will be helpful. Thanks!!!!
That's cool! Is it possible to lose the original 1.8 inch drive and just
run on the sata hard drive in the caddy? is the 1.8 inch hard drive IDE or
SATA? Could you take it out and install a regular 2.5 inch hard drive?
Thank you for your help! :)
Hello Harry, You will find a link for the product underneath the video in
the description section. Youtube does not allow links in responses. Any
SATA 2.5" hard drive with a maximum height of 9.5mm will work. Thanks!
Hi Guys, somebody can say it is stupid question but i am not expert when it
comes to the hardware and i need to be sure, so sorry. I seen your video
and i am going to buy Asus N53 SM, and i want to change the optical drive
with ,,Mushkin MKNSSDCR240GB-DX SOLID STATE DRIVE Chronos Deluxe SATA III
6Gbps 240GB SSD ,, . You mention optical drive is SATA, and the disk I want
is SATA III, would it work or will I have to look up for something with
SATA II ?
I found this disk on internet and it is sold by ram experts for 250 USD,
but there is no reference for the proportions of the disk so how can i pick
the right caddy for it? Do all 2,5 SSD have to have some standard
proportions? And the last question, this disk have significantly higher
electricity consumption than the competitors, would it be a problem? If
anybody have experience with this disk or brand please share your opinion.
Thanks a lot.
It will fit Asus N53SN..indicator light is not visible when hdd is working
thou..Upgrade is very very simple..I have done this on my Asus N53JN and
now i have ssd for system and hdd for storage, best upgrade ever for
me...Also using DVD burner that I removed from laptop with power over Esata
cable I bought for 10$ on Ebay, you need Esatap on your laptop..
Hi, i would likte to thank you for this wonderful video. I recived my Asus
N53SN yesterday and today i ordered an SSD from Crucial. I'm now wondering
from where i should get a hdd caddy... for how long has the site you linked
to been out of them? or do you know any other good places to find them. yet
again ty for this video :)
I fscking love you bro. I was checking the video to make sure I was corrent
about replacing my HDD from above and not below (putting a 250gb Vertex 3
ssd in) when I see that you're putting a 2nd HDD in!!! I love it..thank you
I'm ordering the caddy as soon as I am done with this POST!
yes I did, worked fine except that the outer edge of the caddy I bought did
not really fit the UL50's so it didn't stay on, I had to take off the
exterior panel the result being that it's not quite flush...a little
unsightly but no big deal.
thank you for posting this. I was wondering how I will find a caddy that
has the same look on the face as the optical drive. then you showed me the
face actually comes off. so thanks again. i now know how easy this will be
to upgrade.
Does using a caddy or using this method to get a second drive affect the
speed of the drive? (i.e. slow it down at all?) I'm considering getting an
ssd and replacing the default optical drive. Thanks in advance!
What kind of Sata disks can be used on this disk caddy? I have an asus N53S
and I would like to see what kind of hard drive is the most advisable, and
which should be avoided, before I make this change.
Well, I have the N73, wich looks verry simmilar to the one in the video.
Could be different though! I have a 2nd bay in the notebook on the back,
under a lid. Don't know if it's the same with the N53!
@TheCwab Hi again i have already bought and recieved my hdd caddy and it
works brilliant!! :) now i just have to wait until christmas to get that
ssd i am wishing for. :D thx for posting this video!
did you have to use a SATA-module for this? because people on a forum tell
me that i need it and that it doesn't exsist for my laptop while another
friend of mine told me i dont need it.
Why using the CD/DVD bay??? There is a space in the notebook for a 2nd
internal HDD! just use the caddy with number: 13GNZX1AM030-1 Can be ordered
@Asus
So how is the keyboard attached? Is it clickable? You just pop it back in
it's clicks?

Don't use a power tool when disassembling something as sensitive as a
laptop. You are likely to strip screws or crack frames. Using a hand tool
is better because you can feel it, too.
I'd like to see both a CPU and graphics upgrade! Nice video though! Also,
is it possible to upgrade the fan to one that's more powerful / less noisy?
Mine is weak and buzzes all the time!
Hello. I replaced the stock HD in my trusty Acer Aspire 5750 laptop with a
500Gb SSD, and all seemed to go well, except that now it MUST be plugged
in, or else it will start to freeze up and eventually BSOD, and then I get
a "No Bootable Device - please restart" message when it tries to reboot
automatically. Once i reboot, all is fine, as long as I keep it plugged in.
Does the SSD draw more power than the battery can provide, or is it a weird
driver issue? Thanks to anyone who can help!!
+dpcomputing Yeah, that's what I thought too (though I've never actually looked it up, and it is a slightly larger ssd, being a 500Gb model). I think it might be a driver issue, but I'm baffled as to why it only occurs when it's running on battery power!
+dpcomputing I actually bought an Anker replacement battery, because I thought that might have been the case, but it didn't help at all! I bought the same type of battery though, not a larger one with more power, so perhaps that's the issue. The larger battery was $150 though, so I didn't want to have to spend that much if I could avoid it! No worries mate, I just thought you might have heard of similar issues. Cheers for the replies.
+dpcomputing Thanks alot for respond. really appreciate it.May I ask, if I kept the charger plugged in even when it's 100% charged would that harm the battery? *once again I use Acer Aspire 5750
