For double owls only, we go back to the shop to check in with the progress of the KTM 1190 in TNP. The first run with the Unifilter foam in the stock air box only ...
Glad to see you got a little improvement +Lt Col Nutnfancy. It's a bummer
when a bike is letting you down. I've had some warranty work on the GS and
it really tarnished or soured my excitement level about the bike at the
time. It finally won back its trust with me over time. When KTM brought
the bikes out on the first demo run a few years ago all of the 1190's were
having little problems here and there with brakes, abs, engine management,
fit and finish (all that was a little disappointing) but the engine was
super impressive. To my butt-dyno it felt like a 150hp bike. I'm used to
a 58hp single and a 100hp r1200 GS. The 1190 was noticeably faster. The
most impressive part was the engine. I live in the Central Valley of
California so there is some sea level difference. I've ridden the GS to
Utah several times (I also go into the mountains here quite a bit up to 6,
8 and 9k elevation) and didn't feel (butt-dyno) that big of a drop on
either one of my bikes. Something is definitely wrong if it feels that
disappointing. Have you ridden others' yet to compare? Try a demo bike
from another shop? Take your bike out of the equation. As a solution I
think you'll do good with the Rottweiler. There is nothing but great
praise on Advrider about CJ and his work on 9x0s. He is awesome and he's
done a lot of work on KTMs. Here's a picture of the airflow for his
stuff:

I'm sure you've seen it as you do you homework and are detail oriented.
You mentioned a thousand bucks? Were you getting the velocity stacks too
or were you just counting the money dropped into the bike (like the uni,
can, pc5, etc.)? Here's an alternative to the Rottweiler setup which some
say (Advrider) seems to solve the airbox gap a little better but since it's
a little more restrictive any kind of gains are a bit less:

Great analogy with the rifle. You pay for a 150hp bike you should get it
(real world close to it). Sure offroad 100hp "enough" power but you're not
getting what you paid for whether your focus is dirt or street. One thing
to remember is that every bike has its quirks and the 950/990 certainly had
it's fill of issues too but it still has a fantastic following. I've found
that just with forums, there are some knowledgeable dudes at dealership and
not-so-knowledgeable-dudes at dealerships.
Also here's an airflow calculator to get some ideas on what the numbers on the graph represents. I hope it's helpful: //www.mk5cortinaestate.co.uk/calculator3.php
I'm a big fan of K&N Filters and use them on all of my vehicles. There must
be a way to seal the factory air box with TNP ingenuity. The rubber frame
of the K&N also helps sealing.
//www.knfilters.com/mobile/mProduct.aspx?product=KT-1113
+Todd S Nothing wrong with a K&N on the street. They do not filter out really fine particulate w/o a little help and constant cleaning in the dirt though. An oiled foam filter is the absolute best way for dirt work and constant cleaning too which they will support, unlike a K&N.
We've all done it. Bought some product with the anticipation it will
function as advertised. To discover afterwards, the item doesn't live up to
its expectations. So what is one to do?
I say cut your loses and sell the damn thing. Start over and find what you
need. That will live up to what the bike is said to do. Sorry, for being so
blunt. But, we learn and hopefully grow from these sort of experiences. I
would be contacting KTM main Head Quarters in the US. Inform KTM, you're
only getting 2/3's of the HP (stock), from what's advertised (150 hp). SELL
IT. & CUT YOUR LOSES.
+Stevo Reno LOL that's a good come back. Even my wife like it...I showed her your comment. Surprisingly, I've been married for 23 years and we're still in love with one another....on most days. I can't speak for others. However, if a bike was advertised as 150 hp and out the door it only had 2/3's of the hp. I would be pretty pissed off at the company.
+BlueStateRefugee 4145 ft. is the highest peak in KY above sea level. Salt Lake sits at 4327 ft. and 13528 ft. is the highest peak in UT. The higher the altitude the thinner the air is = less horsepower.
Well it seems that his altitude along with the air filter may have something to do with the reliability with the bike. If your higher then you should probably find another bike but if your closer to sea level then you can make this bike do.

+anon Yes, for almost all building materials we use metric but for human height & weight we use imperial, also our speedometers show km/h as well as mph.
If they'd left the traction control off (you don't need it), and done away
with all the rider modes (most people just leave it on sports mode, I'd
bet) it would cost 12K. Then it would be a good deal.
+Nick M Sixth gear is geared very long obviously. But try and keep the bike under control in first gear while also using most of its power when first gear only goes up to 85kph. No joke. Ridiculously short gearing combined with 144NM of torque is just impossible to control unless riding it as fast as a 250cc.
+Nick M of course you can just not use the majority of the bikes potential and keep the front end down. That's not the point. People buy this bike because of its power. And the amount of torque it has, and it's gearing, makes trying to accelerate hard without the t.c virtually impossible. There needs to be something close to balance. And this bike is just mentally powerful .
+Nick M Many, many experienced riders have already stated that this bike is completely unrideable without TC in the first three gears due to it being virtually impossible to keep the front wheel down. A B-King is not even comparable to this.
I have a Suzuki B-King. It is about as powerful as the 1290R. It does not have traction control. The baron clearly made an error of judgment. People should learn not to rely on technology.
