"Dark Strong Kentucky" was a much hyped blend when it was recently reissued by Orlik. A blend of dark fired Kentucky, Virginia tobaccos, and a topping, does it ...
+Hoang Anh Tran - They're made by B.J. Long and all the same size as far as I know.
Pipe Tobacco Box-Opening: Burley Blends and Another Dunhill
There IS a box. It WILL be opened. It contains pipe tobacco, several tins of which have yet to be reviewed on the Stuff&Things channel. Enjoy! Thanks for ...
Hey Bradley, ABF is one of my go-to tobaccos. Search for HU-Tobacco Makhuwa
(it is a very nutty and chocolatey burley-perique-virginia-blend;
HU-Tobacco is a german tobacconist which produces very special, outstanding
blends).
Best regards from Germany,
Giacomo ;)
Yeah, I always feel sorry for you guys in the UK and EU. Ridiculous to force a company which produces a legal product to actively advertise against their own product on their own labeling.
Quick Pipe Tobacco Reviews: Captain Black Premium Edition Tins
New Captain Black tins!!! MIDNIGHT GOLD, RED SKY, and BLACK SEA. A very nice addition to the Captain Black line!
+renan villegas You're welcome! Happy to help! I forgot to mention on of my favorites. You should definitely try "Ole Shenandoah Barrel No. 76" from pipesancigars.com. It's a great tin tobacco to start wit and it's not expensive.
Hi just saw your video and in going to ask a favor Im just new on smoking
pipe tobacco what kind of best aromatic blend will you recommend for a
beginner Thank you in advance.
+renan villegas That all depends on your tastes. Are you a former cigarette smoker? If so then maybe a burley/virginia blend like Prince Albert or Carter Hall or Half & Half. Same if you like cigars. If you have a sweet tooth like me and/or want a sweet taste and crowd pleasing aroma then you should go with anything that has black Cavendish in it such as: Captain Black Original or Royal or Copper. Or go with a straight black Cavendish like Captain Black Dark. Lane 1-Q and BCA are very popular. I really like Lane LL-7. Hope those help. If your curious about a blend check out my huge amount of reviews I've done. Thanks for watching!
+BaldPipeSmoker Oh and I should also mention, I just put in my first order ever for Lane 1Q... I ONLY did it because I heard it's Captain Black at a MUCH lower price point ")I'll let you know!!
+Wulfle oh okay I get it. Lol! Sherlock Holmes is a great pipe smoking fictional character. The new movies with Robert Downey are great! Hope they make another one.
It's an old Sherlock Holmes thing. If he came upon a case that was particularly difficult or mentally taxing, he would sit and think about it for three pipes worth of time, hence the name, A Three Pipe Problem.
The Science of: Long Term Aromatic Pipe Tobacco Storage
I weigh in on if you can store aromatic pipe tobacco for an extended period of time. I give a layman's explanation of how they make aromatics (here in the states) ...
i agree with you jay. regular tobacco aging is fine, but aromatics in my
opinion still taste the same and as moisture drops it does become more
mellow. i am a cigar smoker too and i have learned aging process actually
mellows the strength BUT adds more dimension of flavor. the whole reason
why people decide to age their tobacco.I am with you on the jars too, i
bought a batch of dollar jars at the dollar store and they are complete
crap over time. they work well if i rip a small piece of paper towel ring
it out and drop it in,and as you take from the jar,it is still moist.BUT
NOTHING beats my mason jars.I use a pump 'n' seal with tabs. you pierce a
hole on the top of the mason jar put a tab on it. --pump it until it
becomes quite hard to pump and ---wow vacuumed sealed mason jar tobacco for
storage. they still sell the pump and seal last time i checked.----so thats
my ramble of an experience---nice too see you on here still always a
pleasure,marc from michigan :)
I have a few aromatics that I have aging for the very reason you just
discovered, plus one other. I imagine that most aros are cased with
volatile oils, and sometimes the flavoring is good, but a bit too much for
me. I'm hoping the flavoring mellows out a bit, not quite as strong as
when I first buy it. Kind of like using spices out of your Mom's spice
cabinet. I'm sure I could find a container of cinnamon in my Mom's spice
cabinet that she bought when I was in middle school (I'm now almost 39).
IT will still basically smell and taste like cinnamon, but sadder and
weaker. Bad for cookies, but sometimes welcome in my tobacco. I just want
a little aro flavor. Most are just too over cased.
Hey Jay
I dont usually keep any aromatics for more than a month, but for some
reason I did this keep a few this past winter. Can't smoke in the
apartment per the lease agreement, which gives me a sad :(
Anyhoozer, I noticed something when i cracked the tobac cobinet up last
week. The one aromatic that seemed to survive the winter (judging by the
way it smelled) was a BCA variant, a cherry blend from the local B&M that
I'm pretty sure he makes with the Lane Limited stuff. Gonna try it when I
get home today. Maybe I'll get around to actually doing my first video
finally, and let you guys know how it works out for me.
Thanks for this vid Jay. I think the problem is people keep Aromatics in
ziplock baggies, and that is basically the same as leaving them out to dry,
so the vanilla extra analogy is perfect. There are some people (I think
SparkysPipes) who says some aromatics do get better with age, but thats
because some of the flavouring leaves which makes the quality tobacco
flavour come out... but that only works with quality tobaccos, such as Dan
Tobacco's Devil's Holiday, as they start with premium tobacco, but alas
that is not the "american aromatic" way, so it doesn't apply.
Great vid.
It's crazy that you just uploaded a vid on this topic. I was just searching
for such a video. Nobody really covers long term storage of aromatics. You
pretty much summed it up as I assumed it would be. It's doable, but really
won't improve the quality.
I think that you can find a good medium between tobacco taste and casing.
To me, that's what makes a great aromatic. Cheap aro's taste like nothing
but heavy flavoring, and usually make it halfway through the bowl before
tasting like scented ass. A good aromatic will taste mildly delicious
throughout.
Great video Jay, and it's great to see you back and well(for the most
part). I have found that older aro's smooth out. For example, when I first
started smoking I was into aromatics and had some from 4 or 5 years ago.
The taste mellowed out, and the smoke became a brilliant creamy smoke. The
ash smoked down to a fine white ash. Very interesting, I'm not sure if this
is with all aro's or not. But I do believe some.....come into body with age
imho.
Great camera by the way, the video is crystal clear!
i bought a couple pounds of cheap cavendish 5 or 6 years ago; i don't smoke
more than a few times a month, so i'm still working on it. the first year
or two i stored the overflow in glass jars, but when we moved, i put it in
some metal cookie tins. it's not bubble gum sweet like it was when i bought
it, but aside from that, it tastes and burns about the same. so what you
said about PG evaporating might explain it.
What's uuuuup!!! Hey I was just watching you home grown tobacco series and
damn that was awesome, doing that I herd you mention you lived in northern
Michigan so just wondering where about? I live in Wixom,Michigan in Oakland
county by the way. Also I might have asked you this in the past but for the
life of me I cannot remember so anyway peace and I'm out!
I really enjoyed the video Jay, thanks for sharing. Virtually all of my
tobacco is jarred just because I can't smoke it quickly enough to finish
each blend before I move to the next. I have a couple of blends that I
am/have let age for the purpose of improvement but for the most part is
more pragmatic.
Take care,
Chris
I've tried vacuum bags. I could still smell the aroma even when vac sealed.
When I broke em after a couple years the aro seems to not be so much there.
Or maybe my taste buds had changed. And I admit I think I figured age for
aros would be good. Doesnt make sense bc they would be the best fresh. Duh.
Don't forget light and temperature. I like to keep my overflow tobacco in
mason jars stored in military surplus ammo cans. I keep them on the
basement floor so they stay nice and cool, and the cans keep out any
moisture that could rust the jar lids and any light.
I think you're spot on. The quality of tobacco used in aromatics is (and
should be) of lower quality than English / Virginia tobacco. Makes complete
sense that aromatics won't get better with age, because the base tobacco
isn't that great to begin with.
About 7year ago my mother sent my a box of my high school stuff. In it was
a pouch of Apple Tobbacc. I opened it to smell and it was pretty much non
smelling. This was probably purchased in 1981. Yes I was a closet pipe
smoker in high school.
Yet another amazing video! Please keep doing what you're doing. Hope
everything is going well with you and your family and you're doing better.
I would love to see more informational/guide-style videos geared more
towards new smokers. Cheers!
I'm one of the few people who likes Cube, and Like you I prefer the
silver. Thanks for doing this, Jay. I have 5bs of 1Q cellared and I've
had a number of people hassle me about it too. Good to see how this worked
out. Scott
I tell you what your one of the rare one's in this family that I know
before I watch your video I'm going to learn something...it might be from
somewhere crazy but I like the best...lol take care brotha!
This seems to accord with my experience of smoking year-old+ aromatics that
I've jarred up. Thanks for this one, Jay! Good on ya for dispelling the
'anti-freeze' myth. Look out, Snopes!
Peace,
Eric
i got some 7 year old Macbarren vanilla flake, and it tasted a lot like
raspberry lol, and it could be the jar i had it in.. but it dried up pretty
quick! there must be a difference in process's
Quick Pipe Tobacco Reviews: Captain Black
I review all the flavors of the king of pipe tobacco pouch brands. Some good, some bad. I guess one brand can't have it all...
I've found gold to be my favorite (I've tried white, royal and gold so
far)so far but I ordered the rest of their line so I'll see if my opinion
changes.
I like the Royal same as Lane 1Q. Can't find CB dark any more. In my local
area. Also please don't say i can order it. I live in communists peoples
republic of Washington state. That has banned all pipe tobacco internet
sales. I am sure i can find it in Tacoma or Seattle but I really don't go
to those cities very often.
+Wildman of the Wynooch It really blows how Washington state banned internet tobacco sales. My state, California, has thought about doing it. One way they could get around that is make it where you have to call the company to order so they know you are over 18. Just one more way the pleasure police, aka the government, ruin our lives. Thanks for watching!
I'm new to pipe smoking, about a month now, I bought 2 estate pipes, one is
pretty good! I bought a sample of Captain Black, ounce of Gold, Royal, &
Dark, I'm not sure about the Gold, the Royal is good, the Dark tastes good
but mild! I ended up mixing the Royal & Dark together and I love that
mix! I just bought more Royal & Dark to mix since I'm about out, but I
also wanted to try some other things, so I have a tin of Strong Dark
Kentucky, & a ounce of Mississippi River coming!
