Okay children, I have been reading your rants and tirades on You Tube about police brutality for a while now. It is time for me to present some facts regarding police and police encounters that bring the subject back to the real world. This presentation will fall into two main categories; first is what the average police officers are and are not, second is how to make sure that you survive a police encounter. Below is the first part. The second will follow soon. Pay attention, there is a test. What The Average Police Officers Are And Are Not Average police officers are not martial artists, cage fighters, or weightlifters. They can’t disarm a knife, club or gun wielder with their bare hands without a significant chance of getting badly hurt or killed. They can’t fight off two or more attackers at the same time with their bare hands. They are going to have a hard time defeating a single attacker 4 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier with their bare hands. Most police officers have received a state required minimum amount of bare hand fighting techniques in the police academy and annual in-service training. They may be in a little better physical condition than the general population of their age. Average police officers are not sharpshooters, snipers, or trick shooters. Most police officers have received a state required minimum amount of firearm training in the police academy and annual in-service training. At most, they qualify with their duty weapons once or twice a year. They can’t shoot the gun out of the bad guy’s hand or have a good chance of hitting an arm, knee, or leg on a moving target. They are trained to shoot at center mass (the torso) because that is the easiest target to hit and has the best chance of stopping an attack. It also has the best chance of a shot not going wild and hitting an innocent bystander. Average police officers are not trigger happy and just waiting for the chance to kill someone. Over 90% of police officers never shoot anyone during their entire career. Of those that do, most of those officers are involved in only one shooting their entire career. When a person pulls a knife, club, or gun on a police officer said officer will usually respond with his firearm. He will not usually respond to a deadly weapon with a taser, mace, or baton. That is a good way for the officer to be dead. The officer will probably fire more than one shot. He may empty the magazine. An attack on a police officer only takes seconds. The officer cannot afford to fire one shot, stop and evaluate if that was effective, and then decide if another shot is needed. That is a good way for the officer to be dead. He may empty the magazine. This may be due to the physiological and psychological stress. It is a normal human response . Average police officers are not social workers or psychologists. They cannot solve the world’s problems, your family problems, or your personal problems. Their job is to keep the peace and enforce the laws that society has directed them to enforce. In most agencies they will have received the state minimum in how to handle people with mental problems, the mentally challenged, and other exceptional people. Remember this; if a person with mental issues kills the police officer the officer is just as dead as if a sane person killed them. Average police officers are neither stupid nor geniuses. The average IQ of officers is 104 according to government statistics. That puts them right in the middle of average. All have high school diplomas. Many have some college or a bachelor’s degree. Some have masters degrees or even PhDs. That statistic is higher than the general population. Average police officers are human beings. They are neither saints nor monsters. They have the same virtues and failings as other human beings to a greater or lesser degree. They feel fear, hope, love, and all the other human emotions. They must control their fear because they do not have the option to run from danger. They must confront danger on a daily basis. The main desire of every police officer is to be alive to go home to their families every night, hopefully unhurt. They have the right to self-defense and will not let themselves be hurt or killed simply to satisfy the agenda of some civilians who expect the police to do the impossible, but without using any force while still enforcing the law.

As promised, here is the second portion of my presentation on What the Average Police Officers Are and Are Not and How to Survive a Police Encounter. How to Survive a Police Encounter Do not pull a gun, knife or club on a police officer. This will tend to annoy him. He will probably shoot you. He will not use a non-lethal weapon such as a taser, mace, or baton because that might mean a dead police officer. Do not throw things at the police officer. This includes rocks, bricks, bags of urine, and Molotov cocktails. For the results of some of these, see number one above. Do not fight a police officer. He might think that you are trying to take his gun away from him and kill him with it. Besides what sane person attacks someone with a gun unless he is trying to take it away? This includes charging towards him. Do not resist arrest. Resisting arrest includes pulling your arms away because you do not want to be handcuffed. The police officer will use whatever force is necessary to handcuff you anyway. Yes, he can do that. It is legal. Do not put your hands in your pockets or refuse to show them. Do not reach for anything. If you have something in your hands, drop it. In the dark or the first second, that cell phone or car keys may look like a weapon. The police officer will err on the side of what keeps him alive. Do not refuse to stop when ordered to do so, especially if you are approaching the police officer. He may assume that you are attacking him. Do not curse at the police officer or call him names. Yes, your First Amendment right says that you can, but it will probably piss him off. He will be less likely to give you a break. Do not tell the police officer that you pay his salary. Yes, you do and so do the other 500,000 taxpayers in his city. Do you think he cares about 1/500,000th of his paycheck? But it will probably piss him off. He will be less likely to give you a break. Do not go out in public while you are drunk or high. These will increase the chance of you doing something stupid that will lead to a police encounter. It will also increase the chance of you doing something stupid DURING the police encounter. Do not argue with the police officer. If he is going to arrest you or write you a ticket, arguing with him is highly unlikely to stop him from doing so. Go to court. That is what it is for. Do not refuse to give him your name or date of birth. This may result in what was going to be a ticket turning into an arrest instead. Follow these simple instructions and you and the police officer will probably both get to go home tonight.
