I watch a lot of youtube videos and the amount of gigabytes I use by the
end of the month is usually between 10-12. With Dish Net I'm going to have
to slow down. For some reason between the hours of 2 and 8 am a different
set of gigabytes is used. It's crazy one WWE pay per view (3-4 hour
program) can eat up 4 gigabytes! That means watching every week's episode
of Raw and Smackdown can't be an option online.
+travfdy Will definitely talk to the installer. A lot of times they aren't sure and underestimate the wind around here, so I have to call them to report a damaged dish usually once or twice in the winter. Usually the wind pushes the dish just enough to mess with the signal. I'm not sure how a signal loss would be a problem with internet, but I'm guessing it's more sensitive than TV and I just wouldn't be able to get online. I'm using Virgin Mobile Broadband currently on my Windows 7. The problem is that they only offer 2.5 gigabytes a month which is way lower than even Dish. It's very easy to eat up 2.5 gigs in less than a week. I have a feeling for most, eating up 2.5 could be done in just a couple of days. They used to offer 5 so it's disappointing they cut back even more, especially when most people need at least 20-30.
You're welcome. Be sure to talk to Dish about your weather situation. Your installer should be local and he should definitely be able to tell you how it's affected. I'm sensing satellite is your only option for high speed. If so, it's definitely the way to go even if you have to deal with an occasional hiccup.
+travfdy There are no words to describe how happy I am for your help! I have to basically demand a reply out of most people, haha! Before Dish locks me into a 2-year contract I want to make sure everything is good. Those early termination fees are truly crazy and I don't want to find myself stuck in one of those situations. As for the weather I get, yeah! Wind is insane around here. I have to brace myself and prepare for those dreaded arctic blasts. Those are such a nightmare (and not just because of satellite problems either). The last two winters have been horrible! I can imagine heavy rain, snow and thunderstorms being a problem. In southeast PA where I live, well I live on top of a hill. The only concern is this one pine tree in the middle of my yard where the satellite is almost facing. That tree might be a problem because the branches are definitely growing outward. I'll trim it soon. Okay thanks for this answer and the second one about leaving the computer on. There's people on youtube complaining about gigabytes being used up by leaving their computer on overnight. I don't want to face that problem. Thanks again!!
The wind shouldn't be a problem, but I'm not a tech. You should confirm that with Dish when you order. I think the only problems you'd have is if the rain is heavy or the dish is covered with snow or covered by trees or tree limbs. The computer simply being on shouldn't be a problem as long as it's not constantly downloading or streaming.
+travfdy Thank you once again! It's really good to get some clear answers. It seems everywhere I turn I get conflicting info. I saw a youtube video with two meters and the thought crossed my mind that one is used for day gigs and the other for night. Glad you could confirm that one. I have two quick questions and I promise I'll leave you alone! :) I live in an extremely windy area (especially in the winter when I have to frequently call satellite companies to fix them). Is wind going to be a problem staying online? Also is it okay to keep the computer on while asleep or away without burning up gigs? I'll close all windows and anything that might be running. I don't want to keep turning on the computer and going through the startup process every time I want online.
I don't know what they're talking about. When you set up your account, you have two usage meters to monitor your usage. The activity between 2 AM and 8 AM is separate from the other data. If you use all the anytime gigs (8 AM to 2 AM), yes the speed is throttled down and it will be back to normal during the off peak hours, if you still have off peak data.
+travfdy Thanks, I appreciate the reply. I found a comment that says otherwise and I'm wondering if you can say whether it's true or not. This is it (copy and pasted)"Beware of dish. Dish will tell you you have 10 gigs anytime and 10 gigs off peak. They lead you to believe that when you are on the off peak hours you use that data which isn't true. You have to use all your anytime data first. Then they throttle you down except for off peak hours."This person is saying that the gigabytes you use in the day are being used with the gigabytes at night. Or rather, that there's no bonus gigs between 2-8 AM until you use up your normal gigs in the day. At least that's the way I interpret it. I'm hoping you're right travfdy. I like the idea of having two separate (day and night) gigs.
Right. Yes the 2 to 8 AM time is the "off peak" time. Kinda like a bonus that doesn't count against your normal usage. I wish they would just give us the 100 GB for us to use anytime we want.
I left two things out of my review:
1. Another reason to choose DishNet over HughesNet is if you pass the
credit check, you only pay for the first month of service. No installation
fee!
2. I've done speed tests on the service. They advertise the service as
being up to 15 mbps. I've done four tests and the highest one clocked in at
21.01 mbps. And this was around 5 PM.
+travfdy Currently with Virgin Mobile my speed is 0.25 kbps. I'm guessing most people would consider that extremely slow. But... 12 years of dial-up makes it seem fast :)
Using HughesNet Internet Download Manager - Status Meter
The new HughesNet Internet Download Manager and status meter allows HughesNet customers more flexibility and control over when to download and not ...
With gen4 it is 2-8 and not unlimited just another 10GB (depending on your
package).
Pointing a Hughesnet Satellite Dish
This video will show you how a Hughesnet technician aims your Internet satellite. This is only for the 9000 "Spaceway" satellite system. We use two special tools ...
While yes Hughesnet Gen4 is much easier to install there is still a vast
region of the US that is still using Spaceway. Hughes has plans on
increasing the speeds of Spaceway in-order to keep up with the increasing
demand of customers who wish to have increase capabilities from there
internet provider.
That's nuts you guys are able to point within 15 points. I have to get all
installs within 5 points on all squinted measurements. I have just start
trying for within 3 to double check the ovt sign off codes are legit.
We just had hughnet installed......SUCKS today. I guess the guy messed up
or didn't care if it worked. A tech better be here tomorrow or they'll find
it all at the end of the driveway.
No. Once you have it fine tuned, you procede by depressing the #3 button.
It will take you through steps of storing the unsquinted signal, the az.
and the elevation.
Do you have a video on the procedure for the GEN4. My installer is 80 miles
away and would like to just do it myself when I redeploy the dish. Thank
you.
Updates and Announcements from the Life of a Scottish Dragon
Well, it looks like I've hit 2000 subs, a milestone I never imagined I'd reach o.o; This seems like as good a time as any to share a few updates and ...
No problem on the subscription. You are probably the best MM Classic player
I have ever seen in my life. Your LPs are great and were a massive help to
me when I was trying to figure out MM2. I think the only way I could think
more highly of you is if you got the Spyro runs done and did some perfect
runs for one of the Mega Man Zero games. Keep up the fantastic work, and
good luck with your family.
Well, like I've said, I'm not actually Scottish myself, I'm of Scottish
descent. What I have is not a pure Scottish accent, I can only attribute it
to being raised by elder Scottish relatives while also being exposed to the
accents of Southeast Texas. As for mysterymastermind, it's not the first
time we've gotten into it, probably won't be the last. Essentially he
thinks I'm prissy because I don't like the taste of alcohol, don't feel the
need to constantly curse, etc.
... but that doesn't make you British? Even though that's their blood
you're the exception. You know Mythril, i think your purposly TRYING to get
me to believe you're british. I mean, first the accent, then the behaviour,
and now... this... I don't know what to say. The only way you could
possible get me to believe for one second that your scottish is to just
throw a random log. That's it, but even if your too wimpy it's fine. Brits
are normally nice people anyway.
In a sense, they're gifts from Nintendo. They were pre-order bonuses for
reserving Heart Gold and Soul Silver. However, the Gamestop where I
reserved them gypped me out of them, having been selling them off to anyone
who came in. I wrote to Nintendo about the issue, and after sending in the
proofs of purchases and the receipts showing I had reserved them, they sent
me the two figurines.
Uhh...... I like tea? It's personal preference more than anything else.
It's also a bit of a health thing, a relative of mine had a stroke a couple
of years ago, and the doctor recommended he drink tea. I'm at high risk for
a lot of health problems, so I figure drinking tea can't hurt. Certainly
better than the time I was largely addicted to caffeine and soda.
Can you actually tell us what exactly your family's business is? Is it
something that we could buy online from a website if there was one? We
don't know because you won't tell us and if we could buy stuff from your
family, you could make way more money than from begging. Please open up to
us, Roahm. We want to help but without having a feeling of pity.
Probably not, I just drew them because I do have them on top of my monitor
now ;) I had to get them directly from Nintendo because GameStop gypped me
on the pre-order bonus I should have gotten from them. I may do something
with Pokemon in the future though, I've been asked if I'd like to
participate in sort of a marathon compilation of all the games.
Very kickass. You've EARNED the subscribers, man. And seriously, I hope you
can get enough cash raised to bail out your folks and continue your
ever-broadening channel. I'm planning on doing a couple of online purchases
via gift cards soon, so this will be a good place to drop the change left
on them, so it doesn't go to waste.
You can't even go pay-per-view, anyways, I wish I had money, I'd help.. I
have twenty but I'm saving up for a mic and money is tight around here
myself. If I get a good paying job when I turn 15 I'll see what I can do to
help you awesome dragon, you. If I could afford a prepaid card I'd donate
you at least a dollar right now..
Its amazing that you want to thank ALL the people that send you fanart... I
was wondering sending also but now looking at that folder erm... I will
save you one or two for later. Sorry that I can't donate anything else than
comments like this... life is kinda hard at the moment...
Alright, alright i can take a hint. It's just what I've heard that's what
it seemed. If you think that's a stereotype i do apologize, just a thought,
nothing more... ooh that's blood going. Just have fun with the 2000 fans 'n
stuff. I'll just be over here... doing nothing...
