The background in dolphin stayed white because it was running already, you
would have to start a new instance of dolphin for the colour schemes to
take effect.

I do not know how I can help you, because I did not compile on freebsd plasma5.Plasma5 differs in structure, and a few elements of Plasma4, because you have an error. Did not write what the error, which the library or file, so I do not know how to help you. Ideally, if you reported the problem on the forum freebsd, or KDE forum :)

Review: Linux Mint 15 (KDE Edition)
The KDE edition of Linux Mint 15 is finally upon us! In this video I give it a review and show off some of its features. Also, be sure to check out my new book, ...
My name's Fernando and I'm from Brazil. I'm a great enthusiastic linuxer. I
like distros such Arch and Slack. Slack was the one that taugth me all I
know about linux. Arch has defeated me due problems to up the X with my
nvidia card. Slackware, instead, was to my bigest goal, but it was always
some point on which I gave up, due some (always new and unbridgeable)
dependency matter. Ubuntu had its glamour, but KDE Linux Mint 15 has got
me, ever since I installed it. Great review you brough us up!
That's very odd. What kind of computer is it? I have experienced one time
where newer kernels don't work on a specific piece of hardware (due to some
sort of regression). Essentially, the only thing different from Mint 14 and
Mint 15 would be the kernel. KDE itself isn't running deep enough to cause
a kernel panic. The only thing I can think of is to try booting in recovery
mode if you can, and installing a newer kernel. Maybe a newer kernel than
what Mint 15 ships with has found and fixed it.
Mint marked it as final, so I judge it as such. But again, it would be one
thing if I was bashing a release for containing bugs before the
announcement. But the fact is I have nothing but praise for this release,
so if they do make any last minute changes, the point is moot (it can only
get better anyway). If there were problems, I would have at least waited
until the announcement. However, the ISO date stamped 7/15/2013 will be the
release that is downloadable when the announcement comes.
it's definitely NOT a Mint shortcoming, it IS an Ubuntu shortcoming. Ubuntu
never used to have a lower support cycle, that was a new change. And since
Mint was already based on Ubuntu, it's not like they can just switch their
package base at a drop of a hat. Things are much more complicated than you
make them seem. Saying that Mint is sponsored by M$ is a silly claim.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and alot of people use Mint because
they dislike Unity. That's why we have choices.
you can not blame mint shortcomings on Ubuntu, nobody forces them to use
Ubuntu, nor does it take the shortcomings away. In Ubuntu the 9 month
support cycle is not a problem as in Mint and that is a Mint shortcoming.
Further more I dislike the childish but constant attacks on Ubuntu of the
Mint community. Saying it is no good and using it as base, is not only
ungrateful, it does not seem honest to me. I sometimes wonder if they are
sponsored by M$ for trying to undermine Ubuntu.
Jay, first I'd like to say I've enjoyed your reviews. Like you I'm a huge
Linux Mint KDE user and have been running v. 14 for over 6 months without
problems. I too have been anxiously awaiting v.15 and when it came out I
downloaded and burned the disks for all LM releases. To my dismay all the
desktops froze up on live bootup (kernel panics) and I was forced to
reinstall LM 14 KDE 64 bit again. Have you heard of anyone experiencing
similar problems. This really bums me out.
I agree with your point, but keep in mind that I found no problems with
this release. If I had encountered bugs, I would have instead waited to do
my review until the release announcement. The version uploaded IS the final
version, though. The problem you're referring to was one encountered after
the official release announcement of Linux Mint 14. In that case, it was
released publicly before the problem was discovered so downloading it early
was not the issue at that time.
I don't know how experienced you are with Linux but if there's something
wrong under the hood, could you tell if there is a bug or find a bug? I
can't, though i'm using linux for years now i'm still a sort of a basic
user who knows his way around but not too deep. It was not after the
official release announcement of Mint 14. It was in May during the Mint 15
MATE and Cinnamon release when it happened and i was one of the testers
during that time.
As mentioned before, the version I reviewed IS the final version, period.
Distributions typically wait for all the mirrors to update before
announcing a release. There is just as much of a chance of the Mint
developers pulling the release for a new-found flaw months after the
release announcement as there is prior to the announcement. Linux Mint 15
KDE was announced today, and as expected it is the exact same ISO that I
reviewed.
I agree, that is going to be a very interesting transition. Initially,
KDE-based distributions on Ubuntu-base will not utilize Mir (the new
display driver) instead opting for Wayland. For the next 1 or 2 releases of
Ubuntu based distributions, this won't be an issue as there will be a
compatibility layer. However, I'm sure Ubuntu won't support X forever
causing, KDE-based distributions to make some tough choices.
I've been looking for a solid KDE4 distro for a while, and I finally found
it in Mint 15. Long time Mint user myself, but I always stuck to either
XFCE or Gnome. I experienced some issues with the latest Ubuntu 13.04 and
regular Mint 15, so I had almost given up until I saw this review and gave
MintKDE 15 a spin. It certainly delivers on all fronts. Rock solid distro,
with excellent eye-candy. Nice review!
I used to like KDE and had a gentoo based KDE on both my laptop and PC, but
it's so friggin' buggy! It crashes often, has too many bugs, etc. After
being so disgruntled with desktop Linux, I thought I'll need to get a mac
to have a stable Unix-based system, but then saw your Mint(cinnamon)
review, installed it and...all I can say is IT'S AWESOME! So, guys, I
recommend Mint+Cinnamon, ditch the KDE :)
Is there are two branches of GNOME? I mean, I like Debian or Mint
(MATE/Cinamon) - older style Gnome. Bud Ubuntu Gnome - NO NO NO! Is that
older Gnome will be supproted in the future? I'm afraid that day will come
soon, so I considering to switch to KDE. Also I read somewhere that Linus
Torvald encourage people to switch to KDE :) Mint KDE 15 is my current
target (now I'm using Mint MATE 14)!
One good piece of advice: Don't download the iso's before the official
announcement. It's possible that the Mint team could decide to fix some
important bug and respin a new iso even though the previous iso's were
marked as stable. A while back we had something going like this, can't
remember if it was with LMDE or Mint 15 Cinnamon/Mate. You could end up
with a bad iso.......
I think KDE is beautiful, but what it lacks is the font rendering of Unity.
I may not like Unity much, but I have to call it like I see it - Unity's
font rendering is the best of any desktop environment I've seen. My other
complaint about KDE is the desktop effects, they just released the eleventh
release of KDE 4.x and desktop effects STILL aren't stable. :(
I agree that KDE "Olivia" is (again) a great Linux Mint distro. Even
Adobe's Photoshop CS5 runs on it under WINE 1.6. However, we'll have to see
what happens next year, when Ubuntu-Unity starts to divert from the usual
and common screendriver mix and introducing its own. That would require a
different basis for associated distributions...
I definetely recommend this version of mint 15. They really did a great
job! I use this as my base linux while I venture to other distros on
multiple boots. None has yet convinced me to change. Kde is highly
customizable compared to the rest. Mint has put in place most of what
others lack. It's like icing on the cake and wow is it tasty!
It looks like you're right. Kubuntu must have just started to do this,
because never in their entire history (13.04 included) have they ever
included point releases. Thanks for pointing this out, I will put up a note
on the video. Good for Kubuntu for changing this and making a sensible
decision. Hopefully this continues!
Youtube won't let me post a link. But google search for "Linux Mint
Mirrors," find a mirror close to you, and you should see it under the 15
and then Stable folder. If that doesn't work for you, I'm sure the release
will be announced on the Linux Mint site any time, I'm assuming it will be
today.
JtheLinuxguy I recorded a video review a week after the RC came out and
patiently waiting for the final release before I upload it, and you do a
review before its even out? Way to jump on getting your review out first.
Me, I'll wait til its out so it at least seems like a more genuine review.
Thanks for the review and the testing, I too spotted it as marked final and
downloaded it yesterday and may install today after seeing your video. It
is really good to have a viable Ubuntu based KDE alternative to Kubuntu. I
really like KDE and the way it works compared to the alternatives.
I agree with Jørgen Hauge Netrunner is a real contender for Mint...Which
would I pick well it would depend on the day...That's how close it
is...Anyway I use Point Linux and at last I've found a distro that I want
be changing for a long time...I love it...It's like comfy slippers :-)
I'm usually very lucky/unfortunate when it comes to finding bugs. I even go
as far as to test the distributions on docking stations, even though a very
small minority use both docking stations and Linux ;) So yes, if there's
something there to complain about, I sing like a canary.
I've been noticing more KDE bugs after this review was released. However,
please keep in mind that the review of KDE 4.11 is specifically about KDE
itself. and this review of Mint was for Mint's implementation of it. I
can't hold Linux Mint accountable for KDE's shortcomings.
A iso is NEVER final even though it's uploaded. Thus wait until after the
official announcement. On segfault linuxmint com is a post about it called:
Getting ISOs before their release is risky, and not recommended (even
though it helps us a bit)
Thanks, J! Your reviews in the different Linux distributions have been so
helpful to this newbie. You're doing such a great job. I installed this
Mint KDE after I saw your pre-review and I cannot agree more, this is just
great! Thanks again!
Why? Why is it blue??? The word "mint" and the color blue aren't
immediately associated. Kubuntu started this whole blue theme for KDE and
it's goofy. I'd rather Mint KDE had the classic dark look with green. Are
you listening Clem?
Hi, I would like to know wich linux mint distro you recommend me between
KDE and MATE, choosing one, I would like to know the reason of your
election. Why do you particulary prefer that one. Thank you.
