The sounds of restrictor plates have changed a lot over the past 20+ years or so and since I was bored I decided to make this compilation of the whole change of ...
+Jay Smoothe I think everyone loves the sound of a finely tuned engine at that "perfect RPM" that tickles the ear, if you know what they mean. But if this is what restrictor plate engine sound like at speed, what do they sound like UNrestricted? Would have been nice to have the side-by-side comparison.
+Jay Smoothe The GEN6 and 5 sound completely the same bruh, over the years with the old exhaust system the sound of the cars would change almost every 2 to 3 years and they all sounded great because of there high pitched whine that they give off. I wouldn't say that we're babies, I would say that we're just nostalgic.....................
As you know, NASCAR has used the same engine specs for the past few decades
(which will end next season). The sound doesn't come from any engine
changes or even changes of the car generation. The sound comes from
advancements/changes made to the exhaust system. Engines, themselves, are
relatively quiet. A lot of people will change the exhaust on a regular
sedan to make it sound powerful without actually changing any of the major
performance parts. Even motorized bicycles are often louder than most cars
while going slower than the speed limit.
I do love the more vintage sound of stock cars, and those sounds came from
a large single-tube exhaust pipe. I'm sure there is a logical reason why
NASCAR decided to switch to the more narrow Y-shape exhaust system. But one
thing I did notice, the Car of Tomorrow got quieter and quieter. Then once
the Gen-6 cars came around last year, they were extremely loud. That change
in sound comes from the exhaust pipes being more spaced out while having a
bit more of a circular shape, and the center plates for each pipe tip is
now gone. You'd be surprised how much of a difference such a minor change
could make.
My guess the exhaust became untouchable in the rules and only one exhaust setup to keep costs down. They were doing trick shit at Daytona and Talladega and that's why they sound the same compared to other tracks.
Gen 4 killed nascar's stock racing age, they all looked the sameDEFINITELY not "stock car" racing by then.Gen 5 was just plain old boring.Gen 6...good idea to retain some of the old features, but still bump draft and no actual driving needed to get a place ahead
+KRT049Don't get me wrong, I sorely miss the great racing the previous generation of cars produced. The gen 4 car produced great racing on a weekly basis. Now we have to get lucky, hoping certain things happen during the race, to produce excitement. I guess I'm just hoping it's not the CoT that produces bad racing, but the rules package. I guess we'll see with the new rules package next year, which is supposed to produce more side by side racing. But NASCAR has said that before
There comes a point where safety out rules the entertainment value of a sport, racing wasn't invented safe, it evolved to it. If I had a choice of which car to drive on a weekly basis, I'd pick the Gen 4 every time. Better looking, better racing, still far safer than any other racecar on the planet today.
Of course those things have played a difference, a massive difference. I was generally speaking when I mentioned the COT. Go tell Micheal McDowell that the COT isn't a life saver. The COT hasn't ruined racing, NASCAR's rules package regarding the cars have hurt the on track aspect of racing.
+Miles3363 No. The HANS device, full containment seats, door plates, and S.A.F.E.R. barriers have saved countless drivers from injuries and death. The COT and Gen 6(Which is the COT with a different body) ruined the racing.
+nascarcrashesnmore one of the old nationwide (2013 spec I think) cars on iracing which isn't officially raced anymore had its restrictor plate setup removed, hence mega speed lol
iRacing took the plates off the COT and made an extra ratio. Don't ask why, just enjoy it
