PIPPIN (Broadway) - "Simple Joys" [LIVE @ David Letterman]
Patina Miller and the cast of the 2013 Broadway revival of the musical PIPPIN, perform the number "Simple Joys" live on the Late Show with David Letterman.
+BadMouseProductions You want to know a testament to her talent? He recieved a Tony award for portraying the Leading Player. Years later, she recreates the role in the revival and ALSO takes home the SAME Tony Award. She may not be Ben Vereen but she doesn't have to be. She's Patina Miller and that's all she needs to be.
Ok, so, they go from Glory Part 2, to simple joys. Lol, what? I know the
music cause I am actually part of a current performance of it. I play the
flute in the orchestra for the musical. we have the broadway music. This is
awesome, but what lol?
What. That's the orchestra, not the play itself. What the commenter before was saying was that they skipped the dialogue exchanged between glory and simple joys and skipped right to simple joys. Did you get a chance to see the show or read the script?
I said I knew what was going on in the actual show. I was part of a performance of it. The thing is that the original had 3 parts to Glory. This performance skips Glory part 3.
+Hacen Shadowblade Well, there's some stuff that happens in between the two numbers, including a hilarious exchange of dialogue worthy of Monty Python, but basically Pippin experiences the atrocities of war in Glory, and abandons his father's army, and wanders into the pastoral countryside to get his head back together in Simple Joys. The yoga balls make more sense in the full staging, as it looks like the acros are hopping around on giant green peas.
Although the circus antics are fun to look at, how does it pertain to the
song? Pippin has just found out that the one thing he wanted most (
fighting as a soldier in his father's Holy war) was purposeless and
useless. He has decided to leave the comforts of the kingdom to find the
"Simple Joys" in life and so begins his life as a regular civilian. How is
this portrayed with unrelated circus ball tricks? Who cares about what the
Leading Player has to say when someone is jumping thru a hoop? The Director
/ Choreographer should have at least included Pippin in the tricks.
+Sammy DAvis Jr. The Ultimate Entertainer you have to remember that this may well not be the actual choreography from the show. The main purpose of this will be to get people interested in buying tickets therefore a lot of shows use this platform to present a highlight of what you might see. I do think it kind of fits the lead players charecter isn't he/she meant to be speaking out of both sides of his/her mouth in this song?,after all the last thing they want if for pippin to have a simple life
Yep! It's Brecht - Iaint is right, I think they're taking a cue from the Mendes super-Brechtian revamp of Cabaret, which obviously owed a lot to Vareen in the first place, and Schwartz with Pippin was writing his own version of Cabaret, I think mainly to stay outside of Sondheim's influence. (No safe zone for any composer.)
I think it's because the Leading Player doesn't value the Simple Joys in life. The Leading Player thinks that existence is pointless without the tricks of the theater and big production numbers. This is a tongue-in-cheek interpretation.
I really like the voice of the guy that's singing Roger's part

haha i think it's funny how someone said: "you do collins perfectly. as
with angel. erm. stick to the low singing voice you're a baratone. not a
acapello." acapello? meaning singing sans music? no, sorry. you meant
soprano/compralto. (aka alto) but either way, dude, that's fucking cool.
you have a wicked vocal range.
Dear God, Please make Dan magically have a long lost gay twin brother that
happens to be just as charming, intelligent and talented as Dan. I promise
I will never do anything ever again that is cruel and unusual to harmless
snails. Amen Hallelujah. Love, Angel
this was the best video out of all the rent contest videos especially a
certain someone's ... who I heard has relations to the porter potty? yeah
so great job and by the way... awesome harmonies
your videos crack mah sh*t up!!! and this is great! they say you can't
submit under more than one name, but nothing says you can't submit more
than one role in one video! ;-) ~D. Shines 8-}
WOW thats awesome! You voices really mesh well together. (Yes I know it was
you both parts, but it so magical, so please let me go on believeing that
Collins and Angel are dueting!)
I sure did, but I made the mistake of only telling the competition about my
video. ***NOTE TO SELF*** If you want votes, don't expect musical theatre
people to give them to you.
I'm glad you like it ;) Now, if you want to convince "them" to let a white
guy play him, I'd be much obliged... thanks for stopping by, and Merry

This is I'll Cover You as it appeared in the New York Theatre Workshop production of Rent in 1994. Enjoy :)
As much as I absolutely adore Jesse and Wilson, I must admit, I very highly
like these two. I feel that, although Jesse and Wilson made the character
their own, these two actors portrayed what Larson wanted portrayed. Angel
was meant to be the soft and bubbly person of the entire group, while
Collins was a struggling teacher that really needed someone like him in his
life. Jesse was a wonderful Collins, and I will always picture him as
Collins, but I feel the actor here captured the desperate.
Are the lines "You'll never have to be" and "anything to do with me?"
Collins' lines? Because right after, Collins says "Are we a thing?" and it
sounds a lot different. It doesn't help that Collins' voice makes me think
of Roger... I can't quite figure out who says what in the beginning...
lol... I love Mark in the workshop version... I love him in the Broadway
version too, but they took out alot of good stuff, such as the "Is she with
anyone?" "you said not to look! Love this song! I don't like the guy doing
Collins, but Angel's pretty good.
mark is just to adorable xx so funny, wish those lines were in the actual
play but i guess they probs just wanted to keep it bout angel and collins
and thought that the mark lines might distract xx hmmmmm...
i second that, TomColinsgirl, thank god for jesse and i add wilson as well.
Did this angel get kicked in the balls at the end, cause I dont even think
Angel should be able to hit that note.
ahaha omfg. did the guy playing collins end up playing the man or
something? they sound so alike! i like how they made the whole thing with
mark part of the song though.
LOL! "Is she with anyone?" "You said not to look" hahaha! I wish they kept
that! I like Jesse and Wilson much better, though these guys are pretty
good.
