I've heard it explained as thus: Angel is genderqueer. After all, Angel has no problem with male OR female pronouns, and dresses both like a man (on the street when we first see Angel) and like a woman (most of Angel's interactions with the cast). So I think maybe Angel dresses like that because Angel likes the clothing.

+Lexi Burris Honestly, Jonathan never made it clear whether she was trans or just a gay man who loved drag. I personally always assumed Angel was a drag queen since in the musical, they pointed to her on the line "cross dressers too", she took off her wig during life support meetings, which I took as her taking off her presented self to be real and raw during these meetings, and because I doubt Collins would have misgendered the person he loves in death. Also, in the Broadway version, during the song You'll see Boys, Collins straight up tells Angel "I like boys", and Angel seems happy about it. Either way, the closest we can get to fully, %100 knowing is if we asked the original actor how he was told to portray Angel. Outside of that, it seems open to interpretation.

+Jared Winchester Angel isn't non binary. Just a girl sometimes misgendered. Drag queens are usually cis men (though any gender is possible) who perform dressed as exaggerated versions of women. They will change and get out of drag before leaving their performance space. But angel rarely ever took her wig off and never had exaggerated features. Trans people aren't the same as drag performers. Though I have seen a trans man become a drag queen and many more trabs masculine people become drag kings. But I think that's because drag queens show singing, makeup, etc and kings show different makeup (to look like facial hair) and dancing.Anyway irrelevant. It is very transphobic but the wiki dies say she's a trans woman in cis speak. It says on gender, biologically male (even though it's a useless and inaccurate term and what they mean is "amab" since they dann sure don't know all her chromosomes and hormones and stuff) but identifies as female (no. We don't "Identify as" just cause we're trans. We are out genders and don't need cis people to legitimize us. If Maureen is a woman and not "identifies as" so is angel. I know I'm late to join the discussion, but I feel like I should help straighten this out. Angel could be genderfluid or another nonbinary identity accepting both binary pronouns, or just a drag queen. Many drag queens take on she/her pronouns while in drag though that wouldn't explain the "brothers" part. Angel's gender is never stated, to my memory.
