The Toronto / Scarborough Subway vs. LRT debate for $1.2B
The Scarborough Subway vs. LRT debate. It has been reported that the subway option will cost an additional $1.2B. But what else can we do with $1.2B? Check ...
I support the light rail plan.
It is exciting to think of all the places we could build light rail lines.
The suburbs are lucky to have such wide throughfares, it allows the light
rail right of way to be built without taking away any car lanes, contrary
to what has been claimed.
I would also like to see the Eglinton Crosstown line extended further west
to the Mississauga border, should there ever be a way to link up with that
city's planned light rail system.
Unfortunately I am not too thrilled about John Tory. I hope that some day
George Smitherman can try again, he looks like someone who can put up a
good political fight, he almost looks like Tie Domi, lol! ; )
+DredWolfster Exactly Underground Light rail looks very nice and would have more level bording!Furthermore for transit we currently have a 9.2 Billion dollar Budget when you think about it!1.2 Billion for finch west lrt8 billion- SmarttrackWe can use that money for more Underground lines and subways!Because a) Smarttrack is a waste since the Ontario government already promised that they would electrify the GO RAILS on which Smarttrack is going to run on!b)The Finch West lrt can be replaced with a mostly Underground LRT thatt can go all the way to the airport!
The city may manage to extend the Danforth line to the Scarborough Town Centre in the end.On the other hand some worrying signs is some mention of the city being close to hitting its debt ceiling and the recent downgrading in the provinical government's credit rating.Keeping taxation low enough is usually morre appealing with some voters so it can limit public resources sometimes, including resurrecting the more robust subway expansion momentum this city once saw back in the 1960s and 1970s.In the end though I must say I will never forget coming across this sketch diagram from Mike Filey's book, "Not a one horse town", that has this rendering diagram for the very first rapid transit proposal for this city back from the 1910s, and it would have been basically streetcar rapid transit, with an underground streetcar rapid transit line under Yonge St and the other along Queen St.Streetcars, Light Rail or Trams as they may be called can be pretty versatile, to imagine all our subway stations being underground streetcar stations is fun to imagine. The tracks would be level with the platform at all stations like the underground streetcar terminal at St Clair West station, so you would have no one falling off the platform like with the raised platforms for a subway station. We maybe could have had a whole rapid transit system with statons similar to the underground portion of the harbourfront streetcar, and as always streetcar trams can run in mixed traffic, on a ROW like Spadina or in a tunnel like under Bay St. on the Harbourfront line, whereas subways usually need more special accomodation only being able to run on grade separated guideway and to a greater expense. The LRT link to the STC and Malvern could have even been done and we never would have been stuck with the RT that doesn't run well with ice buildup on the power and magnetic propulsion rail, but that was and still is the long term legacy of the provincial government meddling that took place back in the early 1980s to the expense and detriment of the TTC, Metro and Scarborough.
+DredWolfster I mean i do support the light rail line, but it's sad that as a city we're just giving up on our subway system! Toronto used to have one of the best subway's in the world! And now it's a laughing joke ! Underground LRT's like the Eglinton crosstown, are pretty good because they keep the subway system alive and competing in the world, but also accommodate to the lower ridership of the suburban areas due to it's lower seating, and they cost cheaper to build and operate and maintain so the lower ridership will balance off with that saved money! But that's just my opinion, what do you think?

I'm a Scarborough resident(Malvern) and you are so right. People are idiots
because they hear subway and they get a wet dream.
Councillor Vaughan's Speech on LRT vs Subways on Feb 8th, 2012
In one of our favorite clips, Councillor Vaughan discuses transit planning and his view during the Feb 8th, 2012 Toronto Council meeting on public transit & LRT ...
You are exactly right, Transit city is fucked beyond all repair... The
purpose is to get people underground to moved them around the city... by
doing this you relieve person traffic movement on the surface... Relief
line will cost over 10 billion maybe even more then 20 its why none of them
like to talk about it. Instead we get a half assed cop out LRT system that
is slowed by traffic lights and is no better then a street car line......
sigh...
so vaughan is saying build subways where they're needed..well the biggest
need is to relieve pressure off the yonge/university line..so we still need
what we've needed for decades - a downtown relief line...every other
project should be scrapped and all that money be directed to a relief line
FIRST..the problem is the right and the left in this city, nobody, not the
mayor and not one councillor knows what to do about transit, they're ALL
WRONG
Because its easier to talk shit then to do, he has no fucking plan. Fords
idea is to properly connect people of Scarborough to the downtown core with
subway, not the small RT line that costs more and more to keep those
elevated parts running. Toronto needs nearly 40 billion added to the
underground system, we need a subway tax.
