Fields of Athenry - Scruffy and the Tullamore Tree
Scruffy performs the Fields of Athenry to the Celtic Fans on January 02 2005 on his lonesome. While Scruffy braved the Arctic elements with the Tree's backing ...
Hi Val, Ian and your wedding was one of the highlights of the year.
Brilliant ! The rendition of the Sash, there, was to prime Scruffy for his
next challenge. Entertaining the bargain punters at the January Ibrox
"Everything Must Go Sale". Unfortunately our offer to play for nothing was
declined due to insufficient funds in the Hun's entertainment budget. If
there's other songs we play as half offensive as the Sash but you can tell
me what they are at John and Jeane's wedding on Friday- Jock
Thanks for returning comment Monaghan. Scruffy did not change the words
intentionally. He's getting on in years and has a short term memory problem
so please have some respect for the elderly.I respect your stance. But
Celtic FC were formed in 1887 when half of Glasgow saw the good Irish
Priests in Edinburgh were doing with poverty stricken kids when they
established Hibernian FC in 1878. Believe me, Celtic and their supporters
know hardship, poverty and suffering. Slainte - Jock TT frontman
kpopit - I too wonder what all the fuss is about. Pete St John, a Dublin
man, wrote the song in 1979.A pedantic few are making accusations that
Scruffy has changed the words in this rendition and find his unintentional
use of poetic licence offensive. The message the song delivers remains
unchanged. If he hadn't moved to Australia voluntarily in 1966 I'm sure his
accusers would have him exiled on a prison ship from his native Glasgow
Govan tomorrow.
My Gawd, you stubborn mic plicks! It's a wonder we ever chased the Roman's
out. Yeah, the lyrics ought to be true but even sang wrong or poorly the
message is still getting out. They hear one version they want to hear em
all because the song is just that good and sincere. Stop picking on the
Yanks and the Aussies, most of us have just as much Irish blood in our
veins as you. Indeed still have families there. Ye might just need us some
day!
Eh I like the union but feel really britsh so to speak cos i had ancestors
from the republic of irland many generations ago and half english family.
But never forget our history, u can like the socialist working mans song
against the empire which treated irsih people the worst but as part british
we cant hate everything the union or the empire stands for except the mal
treatment of the irsih and the blacks who were slaves.
Thanks for the feedback Gemma aka monaghancampbeell. I will take it on
board and pass it on to the Scruffy one who will no doubt do as he damn
well pleases as usual. For the record Scruffy received no cash payment for
this Parkheid performance. The Celtic VIP treatment and meeting boyhood
heroes, Bertie Auld and Danny McGrain was priceless to the Scruff. Slainte

Thanks for taking the time to post a comment gburny. But sadly the message
you are trying to convey is lost due to either an inarticulate delivery by
your words or possibly my level of intellect. So in the words of former
great Queensland ex Federal MP Pauline Hanson when asked if she was
homophobic I must ask you to "please explain" or sadly I will have to send
your words into the abyss.
there R a few versions of this love song, i just like the origional version
that i have grown up with, what i dispise is, this beautiful song is now
associated with bigitary, not the hardship that our grt, grt, grand parents
and those b4 them "suffered an enjured" If u want 2 make a comment,
goonboss, "an please do" make it worthwile and with a bit of intelligence
and knowledge behind it.
The broadsheet lyrics are below the St. John lyrics. The song was based on
a true story of the fate of one young couple during the Irish famine. The
song tells the story of Lord Trevelyan who cruely brought in cow corn to
feed the people. local people thought it would save them and so broke into
the stores, were arrested, and subsequently deported to Australia.
I will further add ot my appoligy that i had no idea it was acceptable to
change the lyrics of the song around. It's to come to blows if somone
changes the lyrics of any to the US's patriotic songs.....It's just not
done. not to my knowledge anyways. That was what really sparked me. Again,
i was hammered, and, I do still admit I was the one in the wrong.
With all due respect hugebhind, i "do" know my history, deportation 2
aussie or usa or even uk! there is no-ones life a "BLESSING IN DISGUISE",
not when ur living the pain day 2 day as many abandoned families did back
then. they fixed our lifes 2 b better. due respect again, every1 is
entitled 2 their own opinion, i feel ur's tho was abit shallow.
Scruff's next challenge is to sing a good old Aussie favourite "Click go
the Shears" at Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen. More appropriate than singing
the Celtic anthem of deportation loved by thousands of "Tims" the world
over I agree. I can't guarantee that he'll get the words right. Why change
now ? Slainte - Jock (Tullamore Tree Front Man)
Lyric change aside. Why hasnt this been uploaded from a local source? It
cant be the only version 'The Tullamore Tree' has on record? The sound is
clearly dubbed on this version (no 'hisp' sound due to mic proximity for
one) Its a nice version, and scruffy clearly can sing it. Do it right, now
and upload that plz. Id love to hear it.
I had a few the day I posted my comment and, I agree it was uniformed and
unfair. I do appoligize. I will stand by my appreciation of the version I
hear most often. I also dont' like the chants that get added in. somtimes
less is more. Again, you are right, I am wrong. I do appoligize and hope
that my saying so will make it right.
Great song, great performance. I pretty love this song, for me simbolizes
the oppression of Britan by the English Crown. I'll hope that all Scotish
and Irish patriots keep that song in their hearts and free their countries
from English governance. That English has run out of time, so stand up and
get rid of 'em!
Words on an 1888 Broadsheet:By a lonely prison wall I heard a sweet voice
calling,'Oh Danny, they have taken you away. for you stole Travelian's corn,
that your babes might see the dawn, now a prison ship lies waiting in the
bay.' Fair lie the fields of Athenry where we stood to watch the small
freebirds fly.
Spot on angenmaer. I think Dick Gaughan echoed the thoughts of a lot of
Scots in his "No Gods" number released in 1996. I quote, "And tell me will
we never hear the end Of puir bluidy Charlie at Culloden yet again? Though
he ran like a rabbit down the glen Leavin better folk than him to be
butchered"
just watched this video for the umpteenth time.....gets better every time i
hear it!! Gaun yersell Scruffy!! ...(but ya have to thank Jock and the boys
fot the back up!! )... I still wanna sing with you's one day......and my
house is still open is you wanna do an American tour.......Ferg
Pete St. John is known as the author of this song, at least in its popular
form, but the words go back to a broadsheet ballad that was published in
the 1880's. One of them was published by Devlin in Dublin with a simple
tune, which is very different than that of the modern song.
Also Gemma, If you check your history Michael's deportation to Australia
turned out to be a blessing in disguise. He only went and struck it rich on
a Ballarat gold field then got his wife and kids out on the family
repatriation scheme. Slainte - Jock (Tullamore Tree Front Man)
Hmmm, changing lyrics is acceptable only if they are an improvment and
don't change the message. (excluding when it's called for personalization)
We do "Fields of Athenry" a little faster but keep the spirit strong and
graceful and don't change the lyrics because it is perfect.
