This is a simple DWC hydroponics system created fairly inexpensively using a bucket, net pot, general hydroponics waterfarm replacement kit, and an airpump.
How-to build a 5 gallon hydroponic DWC system with trellis for cucumbers
In this video I need to move my cucumbers away from my peppers. So I create a 5 gallon dwc bucket system with trellis and sight tube. Thanks for watching.

HI sorry for the late reply, im using the BEST there is! i have
incorporated DWC with autopot. Meaning i am always in DWC but i do not need
NO PUMS!!! to continiously refil. My plants drink all they need with
oxystones air suppliment and the water does NOT go back into the tank like
DWC today. this messes up the ph levels due to the salts generated. I
rarely have to refill and my ph levels are NEVER affected. the water is all
used up by the plants thus no wasre! gravity fed, NO PUMOS! Ultimate
Thank u for a detailed video. I use something very close to your buckets. I
found after a few months, the roots wrap around the bubbler and makes it
hard to pull the plant up. I also use a fish tank heater, and again the
roots wrap around it also. I don't pull my plants up, but I do drain, then
move to my flowering room. I wonder if fish tank tubing isn't cheaper than
the 1/4 inch irrigation hoses. I need to check that out. But again, thank u
for a nice video. Well done.
I'm going to try this. I think gluing the stone to the bottom seems
unnecessary. If you rig a way to lift the airstone out the top without
moving the net basket, you can drain the bucket with your drain tube and
pour new nutrients through the hydroton. Then if you want to change the
airstones (or inspect) you can pull them up through the top. I'm thinking
maybe a 1" holesaw in the basket rim, then use one of those foam clone
inserts around the tube to plug the hole?
Q: So, in regards to regulating the volume of water in the bucket, do you
just fill it to , say, 80% capacity up to the netti pots - and then keep
that same volume for the entire duration of the grow? Or, as the roots get
longer and longer, to you steadily reduce the water volume? My assumption
is that in a "Deep Water Culture" DWC hydroponic system, the whole purpose
it to keep as much of the roots as fully submerged as possible.

Just to help clarify - Hydroton is a brand name of LECA (Lightweight
Expanded Clay Aggregate). Hydroton stopped production a few months ago and
is getting harder to find at grow shops. There are other brands out there
though. The name "Hydroton" is used as a general term for LECA. I just
don't want anyone to be confused when they go shopping for hydroton and the
store says "they quit making it". Happy growing!
very informational, i´d like some more informations, i´d categorize this
movie as step one, you kind of helped us through how to make the most
important "ingredient" wich is the medium i´d like to know, how about ph
levels? im sure we all know how to measure ph, but what is the best ph
level and how does one obtain this level? (long term) how often is it
required to clean your mediums?
You know you can just use the water gauge insert idea, and run your air
into the bucket that way. That's what I do. I just lift the lid to check
the fuel, and run air through the bottom hole, like the water gauge. Same
size bucket hole with grommet, just adapted down to air pump line outlet
size via pvc pieces. Its the cheap way, really. It eliminates the need for
an air stone.
He did have an in-line air check valve so that shouldn't be possible.
Arguably somewhere down the road the grommit could fail and leak on the
floor, but you're only looking at a 3.5-4gal spill You could put the pot in
one of those plastic sement mixing pans if you were worried about that (if
you're growing in the house for example). Good tip on the high volume
stones.
Great vid sir.. I am doing a hydroponic 5 gal bucket system w/airstone.. I
have had my water level (when pot is in and nested) near the top of the
basket almost getting the top hydraton wet.. Should I loswe the water down
to only a half inch above the pot to get air on the roots? Any advice would
be great, thank you.
Thanks for the video. I also have the thorough step-by-step training video
instructions on how to make your own selfmade Aquaponic system. Its so
simple that even your grandma can do it! Look into here to find out more:

I would like to use round river rock (small) or lava rock cuz the hydroton
is expensive. Plus I would have to travel FAR to get them. What would be my
down falls of the rocks I want to use. Scaring roots, heavier to work with,
alge. give it to me man, I can take it.lol
Get a second 5 gal bucket and drill a hole in the bottom of each and run a
length about 6" between the two. Leave your cuke in the first bucket and
adjust your nutes in the other bucket. It will take a short while for the
two buckets to come to equilibrium.
Indeed, I've just put together my first system based on research, and could
have saved myself a lot of hassle when I got home and two hours wandering
stupidly around Lowe's with a very depressed wife and 3-yr. old daughter
had I found this video sooner.
@ parisnydude98 when the plants are young and just placed in system I have
the solution a half inch above bottom of net pot. Once the roots grow down
into the solution I lower the solution to a half inch below the net pots.
How this helps.
greners.com (among others) has the product at least to see what he's
talking about. They seemed to have a better price than alot on amazon. If
you walk in a local hydroponics store they almost certainly have bags
laying around for sale.
Just a bit of advice...the grommets will fit A LOT better in a 13/16 hole
rather than the 7/8 hole that that he used. I found that under 4 gallons of
water, the 7/8 hole leaked very slightly. I had no leaks at all with the
13/16 hole.
I tried your idea... I must say that it's a great design, and can easily be
modified to suit any of your needs. I living in a tropical country, move my
plants in and out doors, needless to say, we all know the complications
involved .
About the nutrient solution...I made one bucket like that one you which you
have made and I got stuck at the point where the nutrients come. I have All
Purpose Plant Food 20 20 20, can I use that? I am trying to grow
Tomatoes...
Just made one, turned out great. I was wondering how to actually use it for
a nice grow. Are you suppose to let the water circulate 24/7 on its own
till i replace water, or are u suppose have a certain watering schedule??
Would a top drip system be a good addition to this set up? I know that the
aggregate wicks nuets and water up, but I want to make sure even at early
stages that my plants can get what they need with little effort.
@Tyroneshoelaces714, out ready doesn't matter the size of the net pot, the
issue will be supporting the large plant especially during water changes.
Make the trellis higher and support the plant well. Good luck.
Dud you ought to use flat plane lid with centre pots so you can simply just
remove the plant and roots to an awaiting cleaned prepared bucket to save
all the buckets!!! but i love innovaters so THUMBS UP to you!
hi, Jksax914 i have been looking in to hydroton. one thing i cant seem to
find is how long is the life span of hydroton. been looking online but cant
find any information. do you know how long it last? thanks
@iceboxhog3, why hydroton is used is its ability to asorb the solution and
hold moisture. So maybe lava rock would work if the ph of the stone isn't a
problem. The river stone i would say no. Hope this helps.
How often do you change water? What kind of nutrients do you use? Distilled
or reverse osmosis water? Sorry if this is a lot to answer, but you said
feel free to post our questions...lol
Please respond...What is the name of those stones you are putting your
plant in. I heard something that sounded like HY-DROTTEN??? Can you give me
the correct spelling of that please?
