CDKN Webinar Flooding and Climate Change in Jamaica, risk to Vulnerable Communities 19 08 15 12 0
This is a recording of a CDKN webinar that took place on 19th of August 2015. Flooding from extreme rainfall events is one of the major natural hazards affecting ...
The old magee carpet factory now owned buy a foreign company is building a
multimillion dollar flood wall so there factory won't get flooded anymore.
That's good for them. But it will cause more flooding in other areas.
Things can be done to reduce flooding but the department of enviromental
protection won't allow it. Things like removing islands in rivers and
creeks. Unblocking the canals along the river. A small island formed
because of someting mr magee did, Now it makes flooding worse.
Bloomsburg University plans to tear it down instead of repairing the
damage. It is in a flood zone. It as seen many floods. 1972, 1975, 1996,
2006, and this one in 2011. And maybe a few i missed. They say the 2011
flood was worse than the 1972 flood. It was worse because communities built
flood walls and levees. In 1972 there were no flood walls and levees so the
water flooded communites up river. But now the water is all forced down
river and places without flood walls get flooded.
This was the home build by Harry Magee in 1946 and 1947 and was the
residence of the family until 1987. It was given to the Commonwealth by
that family and has been the home of Bloomsburg University's Corporate and
Continuing Education program.
The bell ringing was an alarm system for the pumps that are in the basement
of the building. If the pumps aren't keeping up with the water that is
coming in, the alarm would sound. :(
I'm sure somethings can be salvaged and used again, Some of the tile and
fancy doors. No idea if the company tearing it down will try to salvage
anything.
