There's some stuff you should consider before you grow dreadlocks. If you're thinking about starting dreads or just want to learn more about dreads this video ...
you had a fro ay? It depends....if you're sure you want dreads then you
should look at how they've started to form. Unless you're happy with the
size and placement you'll prolly have to comb some out and make some
adjustments...like if you have one that has a huge section and it's likely
going to grow into Sr.MEGA-DREAD, a mean Mexican boxing dreadlock with
unmatched strength, and possibly hold you and your family hostage....you're
gunna want to separate that bad boy before he locs too tight...
the only truly residue free soaps/shampoo's (besides the dread head soap)
that I know of are sold for people with eczema. Many shampoos make residue
claims but if you check them out you can feel and smell residue they leave
behind. If you need something in a pich, J&J no more tears baby shampoo
leaves little residue, not bad for temporary use. btw castle soaps (animal
or vegetable based)all leave residue, it's why they make skin feel soft,
the residue left behind is what gives that feeling..
All of my responses have been appearing as new posts. I thought YouTube was
conspiring against me until I found the following in the FAQ: "Also, please
note that your comment will be posted as a new comment when you post a
reply to another comment, if there is more than one page of comments.
However, if you click on "View all comments" you can view your comment as a
reply to the one you commented on." This makes it crazy hard to match up
responses (answers) to questions about dreads. (CONT)
yea, that does help, It's actually mentioned in the next vlog (part c). You
can stop using conditioner sooner, it's really the last week or two that
makes the biggest difference. If you can use a residue free soap for the
last week it will help. 5 inches is good. The length of the dreads will
depend on your section size, bigger sections, shorter dreads, on average
you can figure you'll loose about 30% of the length. There's some good info
on this in the faq at [dreadheadhq] [dot] [com]
It wastes your time, cause you can't find the response, and it wastes my
time cause I'm not helping you or anybody else with the answer. Instead I'm
going to ask everyone to post dreadlocks questions in the Knowledge Base at
Dread Head HQ(.)(com) Not only can everyone benefit from new questions that
are not answered already in the knowledge base but you can find the answer
to almost every question there already. Google "dreadlocks knowledge base"
for a quick link to the Dread Head FAQ.
Nice video. I've had dreads since 96. I agree with your most of your video
but disagree on a small part. So, you've had people talk to you from day
one about wether or not they should dread. I always say to dread it up
asap. They may be reaching for something they don't quite understand yet.
The struggle with the dreads usually weeds out people that shouldn't have
had them in the first place anyway. Maybe one learns from the
journey..about themselves &... you know, the big picture.
dreads are simple after they mature... just keep them clean and put some
loose hair in now an then. When they are new it's a good idea to maintain
them...working on them then will help them mature faster and you'll get to
the point where you don't have to work on them sooner. You can also just
neglect them, which is simple...but if you have a job or a reason you can't
completely ignore social standards (can't look like a caveman for months)
backcombing is prolly a better choice :)
hey that's a really good video! i'm 15 and i want to have dreadlocks
allover my head i i've been wanting them for a long time but i have a huge
problem. tehy don't want dreadlocks in my house that's the only thing that
makes me stay like this whit my hair but i don't care i love them and i
will have them i'm just thinking a bit of the consecuences your video has
helpped me a lot. hope you understand because i'm from argentina and we
don't speak english here thanks a lot!!
yea, I've seen'em too. I have a response in the FAQ on our site, search the
faq for "bad wax" and it should come up. In short, wax used properly is
great. I started my dreads with it and I recommend it. That said, it can
also be misused (using too much and using it at the wrong time) and it can
be gross and hinder progress... So, read the instructions for using it
(also in the faq) and you'll get better dreads in less time.. I'm going to
do a vid on wax..I promise :)
thanks man, listen im from isreal and we dont have Dreadlocks hairslones..
my hair is like a Velcro its forming knots by itself.. i think about make
it a dreads but there is a problem in the back of my head my hair is curly
and i mean all of my back scalp .. and in front its kind of straight becuse
of my ponytail.. im afraid to make mistakes since im joining the army next
year and i love my annoying hair.. what can i do? do the Twisting method is
effective?
ya know, I agree...people who weren't meant to have dreads won't keep
them...I also feel like giving it some thought up font, instead of jumping
in immediately, might help more people succeed, it may just be a matter of
timing, choosing the right time when success is more likely.. I hate
hearing about dreads getting cut before they mature... If there were a
dread superhero he'd fly around and stop people from cutting off their
dreads :)
How to Grow Dreadlocks With Straight or Curly Hair : Dreadlocks 101
There are some 100% natural products that are proven hair growth methods. I
make a rosemary, sage, thyme, and olive oil infusion and it has made my
hair grow in faster, thicker, and healthier after it started thinning and
falling out due to anemia. I do agree that most hair care products sold in
stores are useless but all hair needs to stay moisturized.
+Karlyn Ray No problem at all! ☺ Yeah make sure you get all the herbs in the fresh plant form. They have the strongest potency. I get everything at Walmart and the herbs will be in the area with the boxed salads. They will be in small flat clear plastic containers and they're usually on the top shelf. Under $2 for each. I usually get 3 containers of rosemary, 1 of sage, and one of thyme. It takes a little time to dry all the herbs since you can only sprinkle a small amount on the paper towel at once but after that it'll be SO worth it I promise! Let me know how it works out for you!
thank you soo freakin much! that sounds easy and not too hard lol now for the sage and thyme and rosemary, u mean to get them in the plant form? where do you get urs?
+Karlyn Ray The main 2 ingredients you need are rosemary and olive oil. I get both at Walmart. Make sure you get the California Olive Branch brand of olive oil because it's certified as being authentic olive oil unlike 90% of the Italian brands. I also add in sage and thyme for added strength but that's optional. You can find all of those right beside the rosemary by the salads in the produce section. To start, dry the herbs by pulling the leaves off of the stalks. Then spread a thin layer on a paper towel and put that in a microwave. Put another paper towel on top of that and microwave for intervals of 45 seconds until the herbs are dry and crunch in your hand. You have to dry the herbs because the water in the leaves will cause the oil to mold if you use them fresh. That happened to me. After all the herbs are dried, put them in a jar, pour the olive oil over them and store the jar in a dark cool place for 2-4 weeks. Light destroys olive oil so when the infusion is ready just store it away from light. It will make your hair SO soft! You should start to feel a lot of new growth after about a month and a half. Just make sure you make sure you make a backup batch so that when you run out of the first batch you won't have to wait a month to use more. Massage your scalp with the infusion every day for about 5 minutes. I really hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask. Happy growing
Could u possibly tell me about this infusion cus I want to help my Afro to grow better nd healthier so I can get my locs back, I cut them three months ago, I highly regret it
your accent is so nice. I definitely agree with you. I needed this. I was
thinking about buying biotin but I'll be okay with out it. Just gotta eat
right and keep your hygiene up to par.
Gee thanks..its a Jamaican thing lol..appreciate you. .
DREADLOCKS NEW GROWTH?!
Dreadlocks new growth - the hair that continues to grow out once you've already started locking up your hair. Despite all the shrinkage, compression and length ...
My dreads are 8 months old.I have some dreads that formed with just a few
strands of hair, but at the very bottom. They are dreaded and are bigger in
size.A lot of the bottom peices just break off from the thinner hair going
up..This happens usually when ever I separate my hair.I used the twist and
rip method and have curly thin course hair.
hey lazy dread my dreads are doing great the videos really helpt but was
wondering as time goes will i end up with more dreads then i started with
ore do i just have to dread the new hairs
+nick pullins If your whole head is divided up into dreadlocks then it's unlikely you will gain more dreadlocks over time. Sometimes patches of loose hair can form tiny dreads, but unless the patch is huge, the tiny dread will get locked into a neighbour dread.
Hey i love you and you're super cute c:
My dreads are relatively new, maybe a little less than a month old, so I'm
not really that worried about it, but some of my dreads look somewhat
braided (I used the twist/pull method), and I just wanted to know when
they'll start looking normal o.o or will I have to redo them? I know you
used a different method so I understand if you don't have an answer but you
seem like you know everything about dreads so I figured you'd be the best
person to ask ouo
+Joley Poland With T&R there is a lot of repeated motion while you're doing it - and if you don't let the twist completely relax between each new 'pull' you can end up with a braided pattern getting formed in. Young dreadlocks will loosen up before they properly tighten and in that process will generally loose the braided pattern.
So wait....my hair is about 6 months old (maybe a little more than 6
months, maybe like 6.4 months old) and my hair grows incredibly fast like
crazy fast. I feel like I haven't lost ANY length, but I know they're
tightening up. What if my hair grows faster than the speed at which it
locks? that's my biggest concern
+Liza Rome As long as the hair is kept in a dreadlock-friendly condition - e.g not overly conditioned / soft, then it'll lock up whatever free length is available.
