"Lost in Laconia"
"Lost in Laconia": During a time when people who were branded and stigmatized as "feebleminded" and a danger to society were banished to a life of isolation ...
God Will Reward you Alyce Jewell. God Have Mercy on all of the victim's of
this institution from 1901-1991. For the sick, infirm, abandoned and
unloved. God Take Mercy on the employees who knew no differently and
carried out caring for them ALL with limited to no resources, YET STILL
MANAGED TO DO THE BEST THEY COULD. GOD FORGIVE those who purposefully
antagonized, abused and neglected the patients of this historical yet
horrid place of suffering. Not many people want to read the "Bible
Thumping", but that's not what I'm doing. These people WERE victims of a
system that started as a place of good intention but it seems as the amount
of patients increased, resources decreased. No Skills at drafting State
Budget, no Lobbyists after all, these folks were treated worse than animals
in most cases. But, we know there were angels among the ruthless abusers.
I'm a NH stat resident and knew nothing about this dark history. so, thank
you for uploading it and sharing it out. Very, very informative and as all
issues in life, societies, countries, whichever; we learn from our
mistakes. All I can say it pray for them. Thank you
10 years ago my then 15 year old daughter made a very serious suicide
attempt. Thankfully I found her in time & rushed her to the local A & E,
this was at 2am. A & E cleaned her up & stitch up her wrist (A & E doctor
said that it was a serious attempt at ending her life because she hadn't
cut across the wrist/vein but she'd cut down the vein & if I'd found her 30
mins later things could have been alot worse).
At 3am I took my daughter to the local "institution" where she saw a
psychiatrist she was asked what she saw for her future & at just 15 years
old she looked him straight in the eyes & said "I don't see a future." It
broke my heart.
But what was worse was that for the first week she wasn't allowed
visitors/phone calls so she could "settle in".
On my first visit I was appalled: my 15 year old daughter was on an adult
ward which was mixed sex. We went & sat in the day room, & a man about 25
came in after us followed closely by 1 then another 3 (all quite burly
fellas) who asked us politely to leave the room, as we left they tackled
this young man to the ground & forcibly injected his meds. My daughter said
they have to do that 3 times a day because he won't take his tablet meds
which is why he was there.
My daughter was sectioned under the mental health act for her own safety.
By the end of the second week I'd decided she had to out of here, so I took
her home & travelled the hour there & hour back every day so she continued
to this for 12 months.
Thankfully the institution where she was recently opened a specialist unit
for 13 - 17/18 year old.
Thankfully she was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder at that time & has been
on meds & under control.
This was just 10 years ago in the UK.
This documentary is excellent & just goes to show what can go on behind
closed doors.
+Debbie Hepworth Thank you for watching "Lost in Laconia". My heart goes out to you and your daughter having gone through tough times. I hope that life is much brighter for you both now.
+Johanna Miles Unfortunately governments and organizations sometimes use terms that are more acceptable for the public to understand and get behind. Naming the institution the Laconia State School made families feel better about leaving their child behind with the thought they would be taken care of. But as you can see by this film and many others about institutions, sometimes things aren't what they seem. Thank you for your comment.
This is something that happened to my dad's brother after being diagnosed
as a behavior problem and given a lobotomy in the 1940's. He was 15 years
old and was at Pilgrim State Hospital from then until it closed. Finally he
had a chance to live in a small group home, work, etc. I'm reminded of him
by this film. Beautiful job.
+Kimbell DiCero Thank you for watching "Lost in Laconia". I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's brother and what he and your family must have gone through. Glad to hear that he was able to live a more meaningful life afterwards. I appreciate your comment as well. Thanks!
Just a thought about nursing homes Most ppl I have encountered are good ppl
doing their best to provide a good home for elderly and disabled. The
problem is the lack of staff and funding. Nursing homes are run like
factories because the staff have no time for anything else. It's sad that
families don't/won't take care of their parents but can complain about the
care they receive.
+lori d Thank you for your comments and for watching "Lost in Laconia". Yes, lack of staff and funding are contributing factors to many problems within the healthcare field. We all must be vigilante to make others aware of problems that face those who need healthcare and that starts with conversation. Thanks!
+Fobile Moan I encourage you to take a chance in watching "Lost in Laconia". The film shows the growth New Hampshire made in leading the country in helping people with disabilities live better lives. Thank you!
