I just recently did the exact same thing more or less with better equipment. The key factor are power of antenna, size of the can and distance from the reflective wall. I did mine by accident and used a steel 13 gallon indoor garbage can positioned between but very close to a reflective wall about 3 inches from it. I had even better results. I had over 1200% increase in WiFi reception than just with a 1500 Mw Alfa AWUS036NHV + 9 dBi USB antenna alone. The can without pointing it in the direction of the WiFi signal boosted the signal 100% but placing it 3 inches from the back wall facing the WiFi signal it jumped an additional 6 times for a total of 1200% increase than with just the antenna. Also it took about 20 mins of tiny adjustments to get the reception just right. The antenna has a magnet base which sit on top of the can. I am pretty sure it is the best setting due to the distance from the reflective wall.
