What about fertilisation, you won't find anything useful in silicone gravel/sand, and ludwigia has many subspecies that won't thrive very easily, and example is arcuata, this variant of ludwigia required hextreemly high lighting, 2-4 watts per gallon and co2 injection as well as a nutrient rich substrate and weekly fertilising via water, your confusing teachers!

the plastic cup thing you have in your sink to hold sponges etc. can be used as a great riparium planter, if you fill it up with expanded clay pallets. plants like amazon swords and a whole lot of other plants will grow very well in that. look up "riparium" in google images to get an idea.
