The character of Ella in the movie was a singer of the 20's, and the
producer, maybe in a certain racist manner, asked the composer to
substitute the word "plebeian" in the lyrics, because he was sure the
audience would never believe that a black woman would use that word in the
20's. The composer refused to do it, and the song was rejected. In December
of the same year (1955), Julie London recorded it, and in 1956 performed it
in the movie "The Girl Can't Help It", in timeless renditions.
Where to start? She owed everything to Liberty Records, which gave her the
showcasing Bethlehem hadn't and which respected her talent and her
intelligence. She never had much confidence in herself as a singer but
Liberty had total faith in her. And it paid off. She made a fortune for the
label with a long series of brilliant albums with the best arrangers and
producers. Her album covers were unlike anyone else's. She was a genius in
her way but never could acknowledge her greatness.
She was an incredible vocalist!! Had no idea how gifted, until I stumbled
upon an old episode of Emergency and then youtube. 25+ albums? I can still
remember my mom performing this song at many venues! Didn't realize until
now that both she and Julie had quite an influence over my singing style
and ability! Wow, Julie was undeniably hot! Thanks for the post!
I agree. Sadly, that's a bygone era in this age of silicone, nip-n-tuck,
and hedonism. Back then, ladies who sang & acted for a living had a fuller
figure and both the carriage and manner of a lady, even if it was all show.
There is so little public decorum these days. Everything is so "in your
face".
Rare is not adequate to describe this, its historical. Ella Fitzgerald was
supposed to sing this in the movie Pete Kelly's Blues, but it was rejected
(God only knows why 'cause the decision makers are all dead) . Julie
certainly had no problem with it.
@teddygirlalice Are you for real? First of all Susan is not the type of
person who wants to get anywhere riding on the coat tails of another
singer. Eat your own heart out tga, because its 'a a thought that would
never occur to S. B,
Only ever saw her perform in THE GIRL CANT HELP IT...these clips are
phenomenal...have been listening to her on CD and LOVE her but these
performances take you to another level...thanks Vladimir so much for
posting these!!!!!!!!!!!
Wonderful! Just shows what can be done with ONE camera, Two Guitars and a
truly wonderful singer! If only we could move back to this type of
production. All that multiple video cuts with multiple cameras is just
rubbish!
Listen to how Julie uses her breath to punctuate her lines at about 1:53
on..........it literally curled my toes.....if she did that in my ear I'd
probably fall to the floor in a quivering ecstatic orgasm!!
I was thrilled to see this clip of the greatest torch singer of all time,
singing one of her very best songs. They just don't make them any better
than her. Thanks so much for sharing this very rare vid.
@billyboylb I so agree with you. In my opinion, Julie London really owns
this song, but I hope the day never comes that when someone else does it I
won't listen. to see what they do with it.
Who on earth is playing that jazz guitar? It's quite different from the
regular single - really adds to the soulful breathy vocals. So sad!
Excellent posting.
She's spectacular. No one, I mean NO ONE can sing this like her, I've
seen/heard dozens of covers and nobody puts as much sultry emotion in this
as she does.
Totally agree. She had class and a sexiness that hasn't been equalled by
any present day singer of any music style. Her voice...my god, absolutely
perfect.
I love the accompaniment....I always thought this song was deeper than Ms.
London interprets it. I see it more as a Medea revenge piece.

The height of the British Empire psychologically but realistically the
balance of power had already moved west and east and the reality of it
became plainly evident during the Suez crisis. In the colonies, we still
had the awe of the empire well into the 60's, so well were the propaganda
and human influence machines were set up. The technique is even more widely
employed on a global scale today through our media: not government, but in
the hands of the truly powerful, probably ironically British
Is there anybody out there who can help me? My father attended Aurora
Public School, Aurora, Ontario Canada. The Aurora Public school choir,
which my father was a member of, was selected by the BBC Canadian School to
sing on the (late) KIng's Christmas Broadcast of 1951. King George VI did
not pass away until 1952. I know my Dad, Ross Patrick, never left
Canada..and no one here can answer the question which is: How did the Choir
perform (radio) and how did King George VI receive it? Help pls!
Thanks, SD. I can't recommend it highly enough! Danny Kaye, Basil Rathbone,
Angela Lansbury, Mildred Natwick, Glynis Johns. Comedy, drama, music,
swordplay - it has it all! Yesterday was the longest day of the year, so
thanks for all that sun! Thanks for the reply and I'd love to hear back
from you after you've seen it again. In the meantime, watch out for the
pellet with the poison in the vessel with the pestle, the chalice with the
palace, or the flagon with the dragon. Mark H- London ON
FYI MARIA GUTIERREZ 9 ICONS DOWN FROM MINE. IN 1969 AT THE AGE OF 15 I WAS
FORTUNATE TO HAVE BEEN PART OF A (male/female student) CATHOLIC SCHOOL
GROUP (as in escorted by 2 nuns). THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAMES FROM OUR
EUROPEAN TOUR GUIDE. "GOD SAVE THE KING/QUEEN GOES BACK TO 1600'S WITH
CENTURIES OF LYRICS/MELODY/FINETUNING. YOUR (AMERICAN) SONG MY COUNTRY TIS
OF THEE WAS WRITTEN TO OUR MELODY. AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL HAS THE SAME METER
AS AULD LANG SYNE AND CAN BE SUNG INTERCHANGEABLY"
I'm often annoyed (being easily irked) that modern crowds frequently sing
"God save OUR queen" -- instead of the official "God save THE queen" -- in
lines 3 and 7. I see now that even in 1948 people were singing "God save
OUR king" instead of "God save THE king" at the same points in the anthem!
Nice to hear a rather dreary anthem (in my view) sung, as here, with some
gusto however.
Pretty sure this is a 1948 Palladium performance. Along with Danny Kaye,
there's the Crazy Gang (with Monsewer Eddie Grey and Bud (Dad's Army)
Flanagan), Ted Ray, Arthur Askey (glasses) and Charlie Chester. In other
words, Ms. Andrews is more than holding her own with the top flight of
British post-war entertainment in Britain's premiere theatre! Not bad for a
13-year old.
After studying in England for a year, I came home to America, and went to a
festival for 4th of July. When they started "My Country Tis of Thee" for
the audience to sing, I went into autopilot and started singing God Save
the Queen. Everyone turned and looked at me, while my whole family burst
out into laughter.
Now to simplify matters~ God Save The Queen 1745 by Arne, lyricist unknown.

actually, "God Save the King/Queen" is the same tune that we in the United
States use for "My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I
sing...." "God Bless America" was written by Irving Berlin quite
specifically for the vocal talent of Kate Smith.
Montreal? Well THAT explains your excellent taste! We moved to London when
I was 10 in 1972 after the FLQ Crisis. My parents had seen enough! We lived
in Delson, Lasalle, Lachine. My Dad was from NDG and my Mom Cowansville.
HAB a great day! mh
Remarkable voice at tbe age of 13 No one taught her how to stand or how to
clap in front of the Royal family but Im sure she leared that sine that
concert so many years ago. Bravo Dame Julie you are such a talented person
!!
Dude! THAT is the brew that is true! We watch it every time my Aunt comes
to visit! What about the speed marching at the end? Get it? Got it? Good!
What a classic movie! Angela Lansbury is still around, bless her heart!
I have always loved Julie Andrews. A great talented trooper. Has she ever
been awarded from the peers list? I don't know, that's why I am asking. If
she hasn't; that truly would be a shame. Just curious. Peace.
the national anthem of GB changes with the reigning monarch. this was
before HM Elizabeth II reigned. When charles takes the throne, it will
become God Save the King again, and the same for William and so on.
I believe Cecy was politely correcting Frederik's post. Although Cecy
misplaced the apostrophe in "isn't". It's easy to make written English
errors while posting a friendly comment on the internet.
Actually, it is the same tune as "My Country 'Tis of Thee" an American
patriotic song, but not the national anthem. "God Save the King" is older
and the tune was borrowed for our American song.
People are saying it's America's national anthem because it is the same
TUNE as God Bless America. However, God Bless America is NOT the national
anthem just some song about America.
