+Joseph Stull in my opinion and experience this would be the "Standard" general party, with a Tank, Healer, and DPS/Utility, respectively as listed. It is the standard because it is easy to play, fairly well balanced, and fairly versatile. Add a Wizard, or a Druid, as a fourth "standard" and it would add the power and additional versatility the line up lacks. Also, just because it is a pet peeve of mine, with no offense intended, it is Rogue, not Rouge, which is a pink color of make up, not a Player Class. Just sayin.
+Joseph Stull First I assume that you are talking about edition 3.5 or pathfinder because that is what the video is aboutFurthermore I assume you talk about pen and pencil role play gameSecond warrior is actually a NPC class that is an inferior version of fighter and should never ever be plaid asde of classes like rogue and cleric. Lets all pretent you said figher...If you are playing pen and penci there is absolutely nothing wrong with playing characters with only restricted power. However it might be a problem if the power gap between the different characters become so large that some of them stops beeing relevant.A fighter is weak in comparsion to other classes at higher level. If you play lets say up to level 6 that does not matter so much. Your group should work out pretty well. But at level 7the cleric will get divine power and the fighter will really struggle to keep beeing relevant. And it will get worse and worse with every passing level.
True, there is that. But you give the fighter one more level, and let him be chaotic evil, you can go Lion barbarian 1/fighter 6 and have spring attack and pounce, turning that paladin into so much mush.
+Keairan3 Meanwhile, the Paladin will be using Lay on Hands, Smite Evil and more to oblitirate the fighter. Remember that there's a feat that makes you automatically use Lay on Hands whenever you reach 0 HP.
This really needs to be separated into 3.5 and Pathfinder. Pathfinder has
changed so much that even though full casters are still tier 1, there are
other classes that can challenge the 4th or 5th spots.
Fighter has no place in either list. Especially not in Pathfinder, where
Fighters are the WEAKEST of the martial classes, even when considering Core
only.
In other words, you're breaking the Fighter in a different system.I specifically mentioned the Pathfinder Fighter, not the 3.5 Fighter. The class itself is similar between games, but the power of its competing classes as well as the options available to it differs greatly between 3.5 and PF.Take your non-sequitur and go, please.
+tmWasted I can absolutely break a fighter, one capable of out-damaging anything less than an epic damage spell without a whole lot of trouble. Granted, this is only in 3.5, but still quite possible to do.
I play old school 2nd and I'd say mage would be the best at high level, but
at lower levels a good fighter or perhaps a ranger seems to be useful in
staving off the enemies.
How did druid make this list at all? they are absolutely useless, wild
shaping is completely nerfed in pathfinder, and their spell progression is
painfully slow...
+Jarlaxle Daerthe A fighter's killing potential? Fighters are the weakest martial class in Pathfinder. Sorcerors are just spontaneous wizards with some new bloodline toys.Just like in 3.5, using Deionychus as your Wild Shape form makes you a melee powerhouse. 4 attacks on a full attack; and the attack sequence for this form was actually BUFFED in PF. Not only are your foreclaws 1d6 instead of 1d3, you now have 2 talon attacks (1d8), instead of 2 foreclaw attacks. Oh, what's that? Wild Shape gives you +2 Strength for this form? Well..I started with 18 STR, so now I'm 20 STR in PF, instead of 19 in 3.5. OK, I lose that 19CON from 3.5, so there's the tradeoff.TL;DR - a Pathfinder Druid hits HARDER at lower levels than the 3.5 Druid.Druids still have most of the key low-level control spells, too. Alter Winds, Faerie Fire, Obscuring Mist, Entangle, Hydraulic Push, Fog Cloud, Gust of Wind, Soften Earth and Stone...I'm pretty certain you can control pretty much any low level encounter with those. It is not the prime of the full casters, but it FAR from fails dismally consdiering how many spells it actually shares.
+Jay Neel Yes, my expectations are based off when Druids didn't totally suck... as it stands now they aren't even worth considering.Compare their killing potential to a fighter or sorcerer and they fail dismally...Compare their battlefield control to a wizard or cleric and they fail dismally...Compare the current form of wild shape to when it was actually a viable option and they fail dismally...If no opinions are right or wrong, then why bother arguing your opinion at all? clearly you are trying to make a point/prove your opinion that druids aren't useless is a more valid opinion than mine which is they are completely useless.
+Jarlaxle Daerthe No I am judging them over the course of a lifespan of the class, I will address your points in order.Low Level Spells being Useless: You must exclusively campaign indoors or play with idiot druids who don't know how their spells work. They're (to use a 4th ed Term) Controllers at this point and their companion adds a flanking buddy and battlefield shaping. Entangle is enough to end combats at level 1 with a party who can use ranged weapons.Wild Shape: See earlier statement on you having expectations on Wild Shape based on Pre-Polymorph revision of 3.5, you're living in the past with those expectations and is unrealistic. Each of the subsequent class abilities are relevant in any campaign where the Druid class is relevant.Pro tip btw: Calling an Opinion wrong is ignorant as it implies any opinion is right or wrong which by definition an opinion cannot be. Enjoy your day ^^
+Jay Neel What I mean is their low level spells are absolutely useless.Having wild shape give a bonus to physical stats as opposed to changing them to whatever the animal is you shift into is incredibly underwhelming.I feel you are judging the worth of a class based off it's 20th level abilities.. druids are low to med levels are absolutely useless. You are ofcourse entitled to your opinions, even tho you are wrong :P
+Jarlaxle Daerthe By painfully slow you mean exactly as fast as every other prepared 0-9 Progression spellcaster, thus faster than any spontaneous caster ever?//www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid//www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard//www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/clericEvery odd level a new spell level just like the Wizard and Cleric.Wild Shape; it's Wild Shape as it was in 3.5 Post Polymorphing Errata's (which technically included Wild Shape as that would belong to the Polymorph subschool) except you get your Elemental and Plant shapes earlier but they scale in roughly same progression as your animal shapes (6 and 8 respectively instead of 12 and 16 for 3.5). All Paizo did is change how their versions of polymorphing works and gave you a streamlined answer instead of the initial nightmare that was Wild Shape and Polymorph that led to countless Cust. Service questions at WoTC.Spell Lists: Their spell list is just as good as it was in 3.5 considering spell pools.Nature Bond: Split into 2 choices, Animal Companion or DomainAnimal Companion: 2-16 HD Buddy who scales as you do, a wider plethora of choices than 3.5 had (and better yet you don't have an effective druid level penalty for them) who can technically become Sapient and speak (notice how you get the same +1 to a stat every 4 HD and how most animal companions are int 2? You're 1 point away from your Horse becoming Mr. Ed.)Domain: For the Druid who doesn't want book keeping or simply doesn't want an animal companion. You get to be a quasi cleric with your choice of a druid-y Domain. Class features: Didn't know immunity to poisons, ability to diplomacy check things that you cant normally diplomacy check (Animals and Magical Beasts), Ignoring Nonmagical Terrain Features, Not Leaving Tracks, Immunity to Age (actually a thing with Age spells in Pathfinder) and a free Hat of Disguise, Greater (A Thousand Faces class Feature) were useless.TL;DRThe Class is solid, your arguments are either wrong (Spell Progression as the only things "slower" are Spontaneous or Non Full Progression 0-9 spellcasters with nothing 'Faster' as of yet.) or based on your experiences with a previous Pre-Errata'd System (Wild Shape). The only assumptions this list obviously makes are: Core Rules and No Archetypes.

+AoWgoldsteel Two reasons one it's a throw back to 3.5. Two it's a rough gauge, but I feel you'll get into trouble if you just use that without consulting the XP budgets.-Nerdarchist Dave
Yeah, you can not just go by the numbers. The troll and cambion are both
cr5. My current group of PCs could mow through 2 trolls but might get wiped
by a cambion. I use this to start:
//dhmholley.co.uk/encounter-calculator-5th/
+bonesjackson2 -- that is a brilliant and informative resource!! thanks for throwing down that link.here's an example encounter i just built, based on a party with only two 1st level PCs.in this example they are fighting some goblins.according to the MM goblins are worth 50 XP, and are considered 1/4 CR (challenge rating).according to the calculator you linked, if 2 PCs fight only one goblin, the encounter is "easy." this is because:for a party of two 1st-level PCs encounters are budgeted like this:Easy: 50 XPMedium: 100 XPHard: 150 XPDeadly: 200 XPif the 2 PCs fight 1 goblin, the results are these:Characters: 2 (small party)Monsters: 1 (single)XP to award: 50 XPDifficulty multiplier: 1.5Adjusted Difficulty Rating: 75 XPEncounter Challenge Rating: 1/4HOWEVER -- if 2 PCs fight 2 goblins, the encounter moves to "deadly."Characters: 2 (small party)Monsters: 2 (pair)XP to award: 100 XPDifficulty multiplier: 2Adjusted Difficulty Rating: 200 XPEncounter Challenge Rating: 1even though the math is simple, i wasn't expecting that quick leap from Easy to Deadly.something to think about. thanks again! =)
According to this system, my DM is putting us against deadly encounters
every time. To be fair, we die regularly. We fought a horde of goblins when
we were level 1.
The question is are you guys having? If so it's all good, if not everyone might have to have conversation about expectations of the game.- Nerdarchist Dave
Old-ish thread, but relevant every day... lol I don't think the levels are
an accurate enough indicator of party strength and would love to develop
something that takes my parties ACs and ATK bonuses in the mix. 4x 1st
level characters all wearing leather is not the same as 4x 1st levels
wearing platemail having some class ability or feat that makes them hard to
hit or doing bonus damage. I have a 7th level half-orc barabarian with
weapons master feat with a nice strength score who uses thick hide. a
kobold with a +3 attack bonus is a long night.. no matter how many i throw
at him... at some point, quantity is not a factor...lol
+Roger Farley also, i try to be true to the MM and the dice, so don't fudge the dice rolls or stat blocks, unless draw up a new level of the creature... "Dread Zombie".... lol
I look at it like this. it conciders the combat rules since monsters and
npcs can take the same actions that a pc can (Like disengage and etc.) the
combat is essentaily more likely harder (depending on the tactics of the
PC)
We started a group of 10 players and started with 3.5 about nine months ago
and jumped to 5e in Feb. I have to say going from 3.5 to 5e I was
completely lost on this. I played 3.5 for about 5-6 years and then didn't
play for like 10 years, I know shame on me.
We have had some Super Easy encounters and some way Deadly encounters that
I had to cut back in the middle of the battle and let the characters run
away from. Trying to figure out an encounter for 10 characters I'm finding
is quite difficult.
Thanks for the explanation on this. Going back to the drawing board and
see if I can't find a happy medium.
If the "actual" experience of the battle is harder than the mere sum of the
monsters, why shouldn't you award the adjusted XP to reflect this (rather
than award a sum of XP)?
As the DM you can do that. There is one thing we didn't cover enough and that is the CR number isn't really relevant. It's the actual budget that matters. Example the genie is cr 11, but it's an appropriate challenge for a party of 4-5 players of 7th-8th level characters. So when you break down the encounter that way the sum of it's parts start to fall away, because the actual cr number doesn't really mean anything it's all about the budget. As the DM though you can adjust the XP however works best for your game.-Nerdarchist Dave
The nice thing about your striges encounter is that it became a memorable
encounter. No one died, and I'm sure you'll be talking about that
encounter for some time and be skittish if they ever see another stirge.
True. Whenever you can terrify your players with a weak monsters it seems like a win as the DM.-Nerdarchist Dave
Saving Throw - Barky's Brigade, Episode 1, Part 1 - D&D 5e
The beginning. The members of the brigade meet for the very first time as they are summoned to Perlamore by their mutual friend. But all is not as it seems.
Wow... how the hell is this vid a third or less of the original stream, it
wasn't at all noticeable. What was cut, and how can I following this if
they are almost 3 hours each?!
Awesome! Well, welcome! We like to make sure our viewers are comfy. :) Our next live session is this Friday only on twitch.tv/savingthrowshow. Thanks for watching!
+Saving Throw Ooooh, I just clicked the link to the stream and assumed it was the live version, uncut from the YouTube version. Wow, though, that was a fast reply to a very old video, but I'm very glad, I've been looking for this kinda videos for a long while.
+Drudley Hi Drudley. I'm sorry, i don't understand your comment. Essentially nothing is cut from the live sessions. They're just cut up so that there's not one massive 3-4 hour video to upload. The easiest way to watch is through the playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkHjiWAUZQbq-uVvI3hLH8OmdYxoeGWUP - Hope this helps!
+donald cowie We've got a collection of Reaper Bones minis. The painted ones were all done by our pals at Iron Tusk Miniature Painting https://www.facebook.com/irontuskminiaturepainting
+JCRich001 There's a list of things you can initiate with a donation over on the //twitch.tv/savingthrowshow channel. However we're open to suggestions - basically so long as it's kept clean (think PG-13 at most) we'll entertain the idea. We allowed a donor to bring kittens onto the battlefield to fight for the party in the last stream...
+APaganPerspective Thanks so much! We want to do more together too :)

I think Avenger is better than Barbarian, not as good as the Ranger, of
course, but for sure is the second striker of the game.
Barbarian are cool and have some multiattack skill, but nothing to compare
with the Avenger
the barbarian's durability, rages, and dailies set it apart. our barbarian never fell unconscious, soaked up damage for other players, and did more damage than the ranger. I like the avenger's style, but the barbarian wiped out the minions almost immediately if there were any, then used dailies on the big guys to make it short. when those guys go prone, because barbs knock things prone so much, the whole party then swarms in and starts hitting that guy with everything they got. our ranger pissed off the barbarian once, and it was a very short fight, with the barbarian regaining control of the party. if your avenger did better, then it's damn good, probably unstoppable. I'd like to see the build.
So far my best character was my Assassin/Ranger half elf that used an
artifact to give himself two wizard spells (freezing mist, lightning bolt)
he had angelic powers from a sword he has, and a glaive, three different
daggers, a longbow, and a bottomless quiver.
He was OP as balls, and now I'm rolling a chaos based wizard!
You had me at half elf Ranger, in using one of them myself, and for a level 2 his stats are great. His perception is +7, stealth +6 (might I add I'm playing Pathfinder), and animal wise too, handle animal +8 (best stat by far), and ride +7. There's more fairly big numbers and stats to say but it's too much. He's been such a fun character to play as, only bad part is that he's terrible with melee, well at least my luck is. He has a +3-4(idk, forgot) but has a +5-6 for ranged so obviously I try to use as much ranged weaponry as possible. Plus I get better luck with them. Back to actually commenting, I'm really stoked to what he could do, especially after reading your comment because hole-E shit I want that character!
rangers do get two attacks with twin strike, but twin strike doesn't use
your modifier. you can get a bonus with weapon focus or something, but even
then, that's like 1d8 and then 1d8 again, most times getting like 4-8
damage, how is doing like 8 damage each turn the best? I made a sorcerer
who did over 30 most turns with at-wills and only got stronger from there.
I agree. After looking at a Goliath weeks before playing, I had him doing at will slow +15-20dmg a turn, with second at will being a temp hit point gainer for tanking situations. Boosted by his ridiculous health and resistances and his ability to do extra damage on slows all at level 1. He's now a level 7 who has never needed to use a daily or healing surge in an encounter.

Strictly speaking it does not."Some spells and class features give you a different way to calculate your AC. If you have multiple features that give you different ways to calculate your AC, you choose which one to use." Though you could debate it with your DM.
PHB page 14: "Some spells and class features give you a different way to
calculate AC. If you have multiple features that give you different ways to
calculate your AC, you choose which one to use."
You can certainly use their plots, adventure hooks, puzzles and loot ideas, but you'll need to change the system mechanics to fit that edition.

@JannPoo Oh I see, it's was my confusion then. Since Jessica was talking
about the star wars swords (lightsabers) and Dlanor corrected her I was
thinking she meant the start wars naming, it didn't occur me she was
talking about the real umineko blades. Yeah I'm really enjoying your story.
Not only do you make it fun, but also intriguing and put our minds to work.
It's really refreshing. It really made me lose myself in it for several
hours already. ^^
@Mavellee "Locus" (plural = loci) is how Witch Hunt decided to translate
"軌跡" (kiseki), the word used for the furniture's weapons in umineko. I
stuck with that. BTW It looks like you're really enjoying this, and I'm
having fun reading your comments, I'm looking forward to see your reaction
to the final showdown.
