It depends. If you buy whole, then you can drop a few fingerfulls into your coffee grounds or tea leaves to season your coffee or tea. Man, they are fantastic with coffee too. No joke. I don't know why they aren't selling that stuff yet. Otherwise, if you want to use them to season food, then you can either buy ground or use a coffee grinder. You use it like you would ground ginger or allspice. Just sprinkle a teaspoon or so into your food as you're preparing it.

I know... I just get this really weird mental image of someone sticking the thing up their nose and saying "hmm... This has a real strong licorice flavor" when someone says that to what they smell. (If that last bit makes any sense)
