I built this ARF about 3 yrs ago and just recently pulled it from storage
to attempt to fly it. I have a Saito 100 for power. I thought I would check
out some videos and came across this one. Job well done on flying. I have
built and flown several planes from kits, Low, mid and high wing, but I
have never flown a Bi-Plane before. Any tips? Thanks.
Much appreciated Mike. I did some pre-flight checks and ran a tank of fuel through it. I have a concern with the engine I am using. I am thinking of switching it out with something else. I have made a copy of the info that you provided so I can carry it with me. You gave me a whole bunch of great ideas and information. Thank you very much for your help. I will post a video shortly. Regards, Bill
The main difference to keep in mind when flying a bipe in comparison to a monoplane is lots of additional drag. You quickly loose airspeed when you retard the throttle, use a low throttle setting to establish an approach glide slope during landing …. only completely cutting the juice when you touchdown. Should you flame out in flight don’t try to stretch the glide to get home it will bite you. Keep the nose down and the airspeed up, also initiate gentle turns during a dead stick approach. Nothing bleeds of airspeed more than sharp turns. If it becomes apparent that you will not reach the runway it is best to try find a “friendly” spot to touchdown rather than risk a stall/crash by trying to stretch the approach glide. The model flies just fine as it comes out of the box.The indicated CG is also a good starting point. The SAITO 100 should be adequate and should provide scale performance. With the supplied fuel tank and the SAITO you should be able to take off in the morning and land in the evening. I switched it out for one that is half the size and still get 15min with juice to spare.Landings are a bit of a challenge as the gear has zero absorption and will put you in a series of bounces if you don’t “grease” it in. If you can put all three wheels on the ground simultaneously just before the model reaches stall speed you will be rewarded with a nice smooth rollout. I recommend a pair of DuBro 4.5“ inflatable wheels with low pressure as well.Mine displayed a worrisome climb tendency as you pushed the throttle forward so I moved the engine 5mm upwards on the firewall and gave it a good dose of down thrust. (have not measured it) and problem solved.mike
