#3 is wrong.its called branch mining.strip mining is striping the dirt on the surface looking for the low level ores

+Lincoln Doane The name simply depends on personal preference, personally I've never heard anyone refer to #3 as anything other than strip mining. Furthermore from a non Minecraft, geographical perspective the stripping away of top soil or "overburden" is known as open cast mining not strip mining :)
