Fundamentalism hinges on the idea that "I am special, you are not". When it's drilled into your head that you are the chosen and you have no one to answer to but God and everyone that isn't is lesser then it's a short step to push someone to the idea that no matter what you do to people outside of your group God is on with that and will probably reward you. Most Muslims are like the majority of Christians in the western world. They believe in there version of God and believe there holy book is the one that got it right but for the most part they just want to live there lives like decent people. ISIS prays on the poor and desperate giving them structure telling them that everything bad in there life is the doing of others and killing those others will make God happy and in death you will have everything you every wanted. The rare case we have seen Christian fundamentalist snap and kill it's often been associated with mental illness because for the most part western life is pretty good.
